Sessions / Fun Week in NJ
« on: February 01, 2018, 05:02:58 PM »
Hey guys- Had 2 fun days in NJ this week- and as a bonus a nature photog was taking some pictures of wildlife and some of the guys in the water both days and shared them with me by email.

The smaller Longboard day i had some of the better cross-stepping and noserides in a while.  I was soooo stoked that maybe there would be pictures.

When i was chatting with the guy- (not a surfer) I asked if he got any good pictures.  He said-" yes some really clear ones but alot that were ruined because either your legs were crossed or your were moving to the front of the board."

hahaha...i explained that was kinda what I was trying to do... we had a bit of a laugh and then he mentioned- oh I deleted them as I went along!

Anyway- heres the ones he sent over.  Enjoy!

SouthEast / Outer banks Rental locations for surf in June?
« on: January 02, 2018, 09:25:40 AM »
Hey Gang-

my extended family is looking  at OBX to get a house in June of next year.

I know surf at this time is weather depended but i want to 'guide' them to a house near consistent surf.

Anyone have any specific towns they would reccommend.  Ideal would be surf right out in front or across teh street from a house- with some kind of town nearby for restaurants ETC.

Ive never been to the area so starting totally clean and have no idea.

Thanks!

The Shape Shack / Whats the matter with Surf Shapes with +4.5 thickness?
« on: December 17, 2017, 06:25:05 PM »
Hey Guys-

So I have been trying to model out a design for a Summer Waist high and under groveler.  Because my waves- even when small- aren't fat- they tend to break and speed down the line- getting in early is key.- Plus im backside on all my local breaks - which always adds a split second of takeoff time to adjust.

I had a 7'10 x 30 x 4.75 last summer which was the thickest board I EVER rode.  It wasnt perfect but was amazed how much i liked it on small waves even with a thickness that would never work on larger waves.

I haven't seen any companies that are willing to go very thick and very short?  Im 210-215 lbs so in winter gear i need 115-120 volume .

Any one have any designs for the above mentioned waves that keep board length short- thickness high (maybe with step rails) and a fast relative glider for small waves?

Anon's designs (scaled up) are really really interesting.  There has to be 200+ lbs who want shortboard lengths that still float them without a struggle.  (FYI I have a 106l hypernut - i LOVE but its just not enough liters on Waist high minus at my weight- i sit inside where I drop on my 6'10 shortboard...)

The Shape Shack / Sunday night repair time...
« on: November 05, 2017, 05:42:37 PM »

If only i could fix the NY Giants with Resin and Hardener..... :'(

Getting into the Sunday night repair grove as my kids go to sleep.  my 1000xxxx repair on my Riviera El Tigre and a pair of garage mishaps on my pop out tomo shape.

i expect both of these to be laid to rest soon- but even for junky boards they surf super fun in the right conditions.  lots of resin and glass/carbon keeping them alive!

honing my repair skills on these boards to get ready for a repair on an expensive one.....:)

Slowly getting my skills up to shape a prone Egg board this winter.  and Maybe a SUP next...

Gear Talk / HELP. I need to spend money on a new board!
« on: October 18, 2017, 02:38:58 PM »
ugggh.  money...burning....hole....in pocket!

So I have been through about 2 years of 'renting' boards by buying and selling (usually at a loss) to try to find a true two board quiver.  My skills have improved.  I have made peace with the scale.  (im going to die at 200-215 and that 190 Lb football playing weight isnt coming back...) My Overhead board will stay at a 9'1 Super Tech- but I need a new daily driver for Knee to chest thumpy NJ beachbreak.

I'm currently at the 'whats going on in the garage?' level quantity of boards according to my wife and need to thin the herd.

This forum has given me so much- I try to give back by posting my experiences on boards- because lets face it- this poop is expensive and many of us cant demo before we by.

I now know that a 8'3-8'6 29.5-30.5  shortboard shape is really what I am after in the 117-121L range.  A little full nose and a little full tail dont bother me- that took a long time of long 28in wide boards to figure out.

my favorite shape so far has been the 8'2 x 31 x 119l el Tigre wide.  If this board had 2-3 more inches of length and -1in of width i think i'd have my winner.

Problem.  I haven't found that board out there. Im hesitating to go custom as a traditional construction will fail on me at some point.  So far Starboard Carbon and Sunova XXX have be the only real boards that I havent had issues with.

here are the boards I need to thin out:

8'11  x 28 Infinity TL - (Too Long)
7'4 x 30 x 106l Hypernut (sooo fun- but always have the wrong waves for it)
8'2 x 31 El Tigre (Ill own this forever since it is basically one big repair...but it cant be my daily driver anymore)

SO....what are y'alls thoughts?  I'm ready to post up a big trade / sale on the classified and on Distressed mullet- but would love the hear what I should be riding.

Classifieds / 7'4 Carbon Starboard Hypernut for Trade 105l
« on: June 05, 2017, 12:54:43 PM »
I'm toying with trading my 2016 Hypernut for a larger one (ideal) or something else.

I love it but it needs really specific conditions for my size (210lbs) and I'm getting a bit frustrated by how little i can use it. (Glassy- only with Spring/ fall wetsuit or trunks)

looking to trade it for either of the following 'types' of boards- Open to others in the categories:

Larger Winter Performance board: (Think 9'1 Sunova Acid , 9'1 Jimmy Lewis Supertech, 9' Fanatic prowave ,9 Starboard pro)
- Looking for something to use in Head High plus storm swells 120-130l

<8ft Summer board : Think 7'8/8'0 Hypernut, L41 Simmons,etc
- for waist high or less slop and summer / choppy surf. 115-125l (ish)

Not worried about loosing a few bucks on the deal...Willing to trade straight up or the trader may have to add cash since the Carbon HN is probably a more expensive board than anything I will trade for - but totally open to any ideas to get both sides stoked.

Im in NJ and travel the North East / Mid atlantic regularly for work to meet up.

Gear Talk / Moving down in Paddle Blade size
« on: April 23, 2017, 05:18:43 PM »
Wow!

So since I started this SUP adventure- like most- I started on a big tanker with a stock paddle  - got more into it...... smaller board, carbon fiber paddle....Yada Yada.

Then the big leaps.  Going Under 30in wide on the board, and chopping the paddle to head or slightly under height.

Ok.  I thought i had kind of hit a progression wall.   UNTIL i moved my paddle blade from an 84 to an 'unthinkable a year ago' 74.

Wow (again) what a tremendous increase in cadence, and really with little loss in power.  I always thought i shouldn't be running a small blade as a bigger more powerful guy.  (210lbs) I was wrong.

I didnt realize til I had the 74 how late I was actually dropping (on a 119l 8'2) and i really didnt need the power- i needed the cadence of the small paddle.  Mostly to position and micro adjust prior to takeoff.

all the videos are now making sense.  I yanked my 90 maliko off my other paddle to put the 84 on it as my long board blade and will move my maliko to a flatwater paddle (I just need the addtl. components)

I took a chance on the 74 (Mostly because Ke Nalu's awesome forever paddle policy) and it was a wonderful surprise.  Moral of the story.  You don't know what is what till you try it!

Classifieds / 8'8 Infinity Round Nosed Blurr (RNB) - NJ
« on: April 20, 2017, 01:19:08 PM »
More quiver cleanup here in NJ......

Bought this about a year ago from Zoner OilheadCJ_SUP.

The thought was it would be my choppy day board- and while it is probably the most versitile board in my whole quiver- i have found myself prone surfing on the days i thought i would use this.  Add a custom prone longboard being shaped into the mix and this board should move on to its next home.

Had a few very small out of water dings that were professionally repaired- hardly noticable unless I pointed them out.  Only issue - One of the future boxes started to have a tiny wobble- So i had my local guru put in some more dense foam and re-install the box.  Also wouldn't something be you would notice- and is now overbuilt- but want full disclosure

Board is an 8.5 out of 10 and rips.  31" wide, 20.5" wide 12" from tip and tail, 4.25" thick, mid 130 liters.  5 fin boxes,

I have a 5 fin set of infinity fins (stock) or a 5 fin set of Jaimie Mitchells.  Your choice- both about 140 retail.

Asking 799 for the board with fins and have a slim fit airline board bag i will throw in for 100- I think it was 190 retail that fits this board better than any of my others so should probably stay with it.

I'm always a sucker for a fun trade- so i'm game to go up or down $ for something else. (but cash is best) My real quiver needs are a 14 footer or a 8'8-9'2 x 29 Head High Plus winter Surf Sup.

(note- I stole the pics from the original listing)

Gear Talk / Snaaaaap. one down - and a new one to replace it
« on: March 23, 2017, 05:48:03 PM »
So first i will say I love the way my 8'8 Riviera El Tigre surfs.  And thats where it ends.

2 weeks ago in waist high Jersey waves the board up and snapped.  And this is after it would always get a little ding anytime I went out. (not where it snapped) a VERY fragile beast.

I have to say though for a production board to snap in half in the conditions i was in is sub par.  I contacted Riviera- who i know have no contractual obligation to do anything- but thought a pure snap was probably a little out of the ordinary- After an 'encouraging' first call they directed me back to the local dealer who he would ' work it out' with.

Fast forward and my dealer say 'yeah -Riv told me to sell you one at my loss..." Hardly anything a good business owner would do (mind you this guy was just helping me- he didnt even sell me the board.

So bummed that i got the 'all good brother' and when the rubber hit the road i got the corporate line. But this isn't an anti Riviera post-  They are in business like the rest of us for a buck.

Fast forward again- and the dealer - who knows i patronize his shop for other stuff- sold me a new board  at slightly over cost based on my pity party- and a tiny bit because he wanted me on the board in the local lineup telling this tale.

(Note- I dropped to the 8'2 El Tigre wide since I now know this layup cant handle any juice.- and ill have to fill that quiver hole.)

Now- back to the board.  Here are some pictures of the snapped board and of my new whip.

I have to say the new board is even flawed.  GoPro mount is about 15 Degrees off from center??!! Makes me wonder about my fin boxes!

9Nte not running the stock plastic fins- using my Dove Bohene Infinity quads from zoner Oilhead_CJ
