SUP General / Re: SUP hate forum from Swaylocks.

The thread is 22 pages long but the last post was over a year ago. I only read the first five pages.

Mostly negative. One mentioned shooting SUPer's. Another talked about killing and crucifying them on the beach.

A few were in defense of SUP's saying a kook is a kook and it has nothing to do with what the person rides.

A few proners owned SUPs as well and said some good things. One showed pics of his 12'6 Munoz.

The Zone was mentioned a few times. One had a quote from somebody but I couldn't figure out what the point was.

I had to agree with some of what they said about kooks in general. Maybe we as paddleboarders need to do a little policing ourselves when we see a kook on a SUP.

I was a kook when I started and during that time only one person offered any corrective help. I want to thank exetersup for paddling over and giving me a few tips on etiquette back when I was learning. He was very calm and tactful. If he had come across as angry, I would have ignored him completely.

The link works at my end.

I think I already signed it back when it started.

I agree, keep paddling the Blade.

By the time summer gets here you'll be completely dialed in and have no fear of falling.

It's possible to get good results sanding and painting.

Did you get it during the big sale from Fuacata Sports?

If so there's a good chance you might be able to sell it for the same price you bought it.

Gear Talk / Re: Flat Water - 50 Degrees - Wetsuit?

If it is warm I am wearing 0.5 mm Hydroskin rubber, full tights and arms.

Half a milimeter is extremely thin. If it's warm enough for that, why bother?  ;D

Starting with easy waves in good weather can be helpful.

My first few days of surfing were in the last week of July 2013 in perfect knee high glass. Warm and sunny, no wetsuit, nice relaxed atmosphere. I was on a 10'6 X 32 Riviera and started catching waves the first day.

Doing some flatwater for the first few days will speed up your learning substantially.

Now you know.

Technique / Re: Do you work on getting better?
« on: April 10, 2015, 07:31:26 AM »
I definitely go out and practice, practice, practice just like I'm in training. I don't work out in a gym or anything like that. Surfing is my workout.

I really enjoy getting better at it. I started surfing about 18 months ago and I can't believe how far I've progressed

Mostly I just work on my all around surfing skills. I guess I want a smoother bottom turn, better turns and more control on the wave. I've recently started doing cutbacks.

I'll surf any clean wave, even if it's only knee high. It's all good practice. I like it best around chest high. Overhead is fun but my wave count drops and it wears me out quicker.

I go whenever there are waves. Sometimes that's a few times a week. I also do pretty long sessions, usually three or four hours. Occasionally two in one day.

It's not easy giving advice on what to wear because everyone is different. I always dress for the air, not the water.

I only wear wetsuits when surfing, never on flatwater. The problem with wetsuits for me is that each thickness only has a ten degree window of comfort. Outside of that ten degree range I either sweat or freeze.

5/4 = 40 - 50 degrees.

4/3 = 50 - 60 degrees.

3/2 or springsuit = 60 - 70 degrees. At 70 degrees I can usually wear trunks.

On flatwater, if I fall in, I'm only in the water for a few seconds. It's when you come out of the water that you might get cold.

When the water and air temps are more than 20 degrees different you also have to consider hypothermia if you happen to become separated from your board. That's true of any water activity.

Even in the warmer months it can still get chilly on the flatwater if you get wet, I like to carry extra clothing in a bag on deck, along with some water, my phone, and sandals in case I have to walk.

A lot depends on air temperature.  If temps are 65 or above, you won't need a full suit.

If it's below 65 get a drysuit. A good breathable drysuit is way more comfortable than any wetsuit, especially on flatwater. You'll be able to paddle til the lake freezes over.

They also make dry tops for when it's warmer and you just need to keep the chill off.

Wetsuits are good if you like to sweat a lot and feel clammy.

Whatever you go with, it won't likely be as fast as standing up and paddling.

If I were going to make one, I would try to install a Hobie MirageDrive. It's the fastest, most powerful and most practical.

Check out the video.

SUP General / Re: Starboard coast runner epoxy or fiberglass?
« on: April 04, 2015, 05:51:58 PM »
So is it just a surfboard industry thing that boards are classified as either epoxy or fiberglass when it's either epoxy or polyester?   That designation bugs me more than someone using " their"instead of "they're"

Not just surfboards. Yachts are also made of epoxy these days.

Fiberglass is an old word from the fifties. People still use it when speaking of polyester resin products because originally that was all there was.

Fiberglass is also what they call the glass fibers which are used with both polyester and epoxy resins, BUT we never call an epoxy board a fiberglass board. Nor do we call an epoxy boat a fiberglass boat. That would be confusing.

Google tar remover or how to remove tar.

Tons of products and info.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, surfing backside is kinda fun but I don't want to spend good money going to a place with nothing but lefts.

That's what I love about being goofy. Most people are regular so I often get the frontside lefts all to myself.
