Random / Re: Balance issues with Zocor (Simvastatin)?
« on: June 09, 2015, 04:44:11 AM »
That's what I'm trying to figure out. The risk/benefit ratio.

My side effects are not heavy. In fact the balance issue may be in my mind. I do feel different since taking it though. I can't remember if I was having memory issues or not.  ;D

I have no weight problem and no excess fat. I'm hoping a better diet will help get my levels down and hopefully I can stop taking it.

I thought I saw a report somewhere Australia is anti statin.
Anyway, here is a way thru diet from the Cleveland Clincs best

Yes, apparently the topic became a huge controversy in Australia after this documentary aired.

Random / Balance issues with Zocor (Simvastatin)?
« on: June 08, 2015, 01:15:57 PM »
My doctor put me on 20 mg of Zocor aka Simvastatin to lower my cholesterol. My LDL is 170 and my HDL is 57.

I've been experiencing some unpleasant side effects such as loss of energy and loss of memory. It also seems to affect my balance and the last few times out surfing have been more difficult.

Is anyone else having a similar experience with Zocor or statin drugs in general? Also has anyone found an alternative that they are happy with such as Red Yeast Rice which is supposedly a natural statin?

I've been researching statin drugs and not liking what I'm hearing. Dr Duane Graveline has some very convincing evidence that statins are not only bad for us but they are unnecessary.

I don't know who to believe, the doctors prescribing these drugs who are backed by the pharmaceutical industry or the doctors who say they are bad for us and we don't need to take them.

SUP General / Re: What does "skatey" mean?

Would there be any reason to want a board to be skatey or is it just something we put up with in order to have more speed or drive?

I smoked weed from 16 to 26, then for some reason I just lost interest in it. I stopped enjoying it. All it does now is give me anxiety. I think with some people it tells you when to stop and get on with life.

From what I've heard/read it's gotten stronger. I smoked once in a while during late HS/college (80s) and it always gave me a slight buzz and that was it. Had some a few weeks ago that a friend gave me, within 20 min the paranoia set it. I did have some last year that didn't do that....it woke me up a bit, gave me focus.

That very well could be why. We used to smoke a lot of local homegrown back in the day that was fairly weak but the high was very pleasant. Now it's all high grade super weed.

The years I did use it were some of the best years of my life. I made some great friends and had some great times that I will never forget. For a lot of us it was an important part of growing up.

Technique / Re: Analyzing Paddle Length for your Surf SUP

I've been noticing how with my 94 square inch blade, my cadence seems too slow and I actually feel like I'm not getting enough power out of it because the blade has so much drag through the water.

I'll be going to an 83 square inch blade soon. I have a feeling it will give me a little more power on the take off. At the very least it should be less of a strain on my shoulders.

I didn't follow the female brain thread. The title sounded boring. :)

I learned a lot from this video a while back. It made me realize how moving your hand further down the paddle shaft gives more power.

I was reading some of your older posts recently and wondered what happened to the old girl. I figured you must have sold her.

It's these perhaps unintentionally misogynistic comments that have a negative impact upon female 'Zone membership.  :'(

It's DJ's fault.  :)

The nautical tradition lives on. I've known many women who refer to their boats as her.

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Re: JL Striker 9 5

I weigh 75kg without the wettie.

Ultimately, the perfect volume for my weight in this board might be 110 to 120.

I got to try Ake Gs 9'5 Striker about a month ago.

I liked the rock solid stability. I walked right up to the nose on the third wave I caught. It had a little more volume than I need. I think the 8'11 would suit me better.

I tend to surf mostly so no need for PFDs......but go out on the coast now and again on my downwinder SUP on my on and have opted for a close fitting Oneill Impact vest which gives me some added buoyancy over the wetsuit but still allows me to swim and have full mobility. I use a Camelback hydration thingy over it...carry everything I need.

I sit my VHF Marine radio course in a couple of weeks so will have a VHF radio in the  Camelbak too on coastal runs.

Good point on the impact vest. I plan on wearing mine on downwinders this year, as well as surfing. I actually prefer it. The belt pack is more for compliance. The reason I prefer my vest is because it's the Competition version (O'Neil Techno Comp) which is thinner, lighter and more comfortable than the floatier ones. It's not CG approved, but I can easily swim for hours in it with no worry of drowning.

VHF radio course? Is that a requirement over there?  I have one that I carry when things might get heavy.

Gear Talk / Re: Drysuit deal
« on: June 02, 2015, 07:26:08 AM »
That's an excellent price on the Soul. If anyone is considering a drysuit this is the one to get.

I've owned one for quite a while and love it. Dry and warm all winter, spring and fall. Comfortable in a wide range of temps from as low as 10F to as high as 60F.
