I grew up watching my brother surf in the sixties and did a little here and there. I always wanted to surf but never had much opportunity. The most I had ever surfed was when I spent a month longboarding in Cocoa Beach Fla in 1975 when I was 18.

I became a full time standup surfer in 2013 at the age of 55 and haven't stopped since.

I wonder if it surfs as well as the M-14.

He's okay as long as he wears a leash.

You'd think he would take on an easier, more predictable big wave to start with. He probably doesn't surf and thinks it's all about courage.

A tumalo is a sand bridge connecting an island to the main land at low tide, but covered at high tide.  Apologies for geeking out!

Thanks, I've never heard the term.

Google maps calls that spot Morse Point.

I use the Connelly mesh SUP bag on my M-14 which has a 15" X 15" tie down. I put dry bags inside it.

$20 - $25. Super rugged mesh.

There must not be any swell currently if this is the topic of the day  ::)

We had some nice almost chest high waves yesterday morning but yeah, typical summer doldrums for the most part.

Watching the cams and hoping for surf is not surfing.

Popham is kind of my second home, and the south end (to the right of the island with the tumalo) offers a whole lot of fun with any kind of swell.

What's a tumalo?

What seems strange to me is that a lot of people on this forum don't seem to think that standup is real surfing, as if it's somehow different just because we use a paddle. I say it isn't.

Standup surfing may be a subcategory of paddleboarding in general, but it's not a subcategory of surfing. Standup surfboards represent what surfing is just as well as any other type of surfboard.

I love the look on peoples faces when I show them my surfboards.

I think I'm beginning to see where some of the confusion is coming from.

If you were to just tell someone you were going surfing, most people would assume you'd be riding a surfboard. That would include longboards, kneeboards, shortboards and standupboards, all of which are surfboards.

Some are using the word generally as it relates to any activity that involves riding a wave. In this case, the word needs the proper adjective, such as body surfing, kayak surfing, kite surfing, etc.

Standup surfing doesn't need the adjective. It is surfing done on a surfboard. It is the very definition of surfing.

surf·ing
ˈsərfiNG/
noun
noun: surfing

The sport or pastime of riding a wave toward the shore while standing or lying on a surfboard.

I hate the word SUP. I never use it.

When I flatwater I paddle a paddleboard.

When I surf I paddle a surfboard.

It's standup surfing. We do it on a surfboard. We are surfers.

Surfing is not simply the act of riding a wave. It requires a surfboard. Whether you lay down and paddle with your hands or stand with a paddle in your hands makes no difference.

Stop calling it a paddleboard. It's a surfboard.

with no problem.
This is important.

It depends on how much you want to work and how much of a challenge will you put up with. I'm 6'0, 188lbs and I'm on a 7'11 x 27, 93L board. It's not even that much of a challenge after a couple months. Board shape and outline does contribute to the ability to go smaller and with less volume. Whatever your expectation is, good luck in the search. It's fun discovering you can paddle something you never thought possible.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. You have to have a certain degree of determination.

I remember reading something on the forum a long time ago that stuck with me. Someone said, "choose the board you want to be riding six months from now." With that in mind, I knew I could do it.

Ignore how the board initially feels. It takes months to get used to a new board. I've been riding my 8'5 since April and I'm still getting it dialed in. The process has been very satisfying.

I'm 58yo, 165 lbs and recently went from 9'4 X 31.5 155 Liters to 8'5 X 30 125 Liters with no problem.

I could have easily gone with 110 liters if it was available. It all depends on how much you weigh.

A lot also depends on the board.

The Jimmy Lewis World Wides are very user friendly with superb performance as are all the JL shapes.

From what I've read, a loose grip is what you want.

Your fingers should be free on your upper hand and you should be holding the shaft with just your fingertips on your lower hand. I have a tendency to hold the paddle too tight and I have to keep reminding myself to loosen my grip.

Gripping too tight might result in blisters and/or calluses.
