Great Jim, I'm pretty sure I'm going to want one.

Hopefully I can sell one or two of my present boards to cover the cost before the Sonovas are all sold out.

I am really liking the 14' Search.

I want a 14 footer that can downwind and surf waves equally well. This design looks as close to perfect as I've seen yet.

My M-14 surfs pretty well but the shape leans a little more towards the downwind side of the scale. The Search is thinner and a bit wider which equals it out nicely for both disciplines and like the M-14, the fin placement is right where it should be for surfing.

Is there any chance these will be available in the States anytime soon?

Yeah, I saw that too. What is that supposed to mean, "actual surfing"?

Apparently the Flow is not a board that you can actually surf, but it comes close.  :)

I just got a call from Creek.

Being typical surfers, they had so much fun surfing and sight seeing in Maine that they ended up getting to Hampton pretty late. They'll be hitting Squamscott Mass tomorrow and then on to JimK's shop if I heard correctly. Sounds like they are having a blast.

Did you guys ever make it to Cinnamon Rainbows? I waited around until 2:00.

I would have liked to see the Flow.

The Shape Shack / Re: Best SUP Handle that's available?

The great thing about the Jimmy Lewis handle is that I can carry the board with 7mm mitts.

Would I be able to fit my hand into the Blue Planet handle while wearing thick winter mitts?

.

Where are you going to be at Hampton?  I'll be there.  I'm pretty sure I have Thursday off.

I was just recently talking to Phil at CR about the Sonovas, saying that would be a good brand for them to carry.

Creek, you are a freak of nature the way you stay warm. Very few people could wear what you wear in the temps you surf in.

It was 30 degrees at Straws Point this morning. I was wearing a 6/5 Xcel wetsuit with 7mm boots and poly socks. I went out with 5mm Xcel lobster mitts and my hands got cold. I even poured hot water into them before putting them on. I had to come back in after an hour with frozen hands and switch to my 7MM full mitts. I was fine after that.

My 6/5 wetsuit is comfortable in temps between 30 and 45 degrees. Below that I have to wear the drysuit.

I know I'm at the other end of the spectrum. I get cold really easy, but you are one person who would have no problem surfing in Antarctica.

Aside from the cold hands at the beginning, I had an awesome four hour session this morning. I love this time of year.

For flatwater. I wear my wetsuit gloves/mitts all winter. You're right they do have to be wet to work. Above 40 degrees I just dip my hands in the water while wearing the gloves and let water in. Below 40 I always pour hot water in them first. If my hands get cold in the beginning they usually don't warm up on their own. The hot water helps a lot.

SUS vs surfers is like cars vs cyclists. The larger vehicle has to stay on the moral high ground and avoid doin damage.

Motorcycles vs cyclists might be closer to reality. A cyclist is not going to injure a person driving a car.

A big Harley is more of a danger to cyclists than a tiny scooter.

Those of us on scooter SUPs are more or less on equal ground with the traditional surfers.

Anyone with a big Harley SUP over ten feet long needs to stay far away from everyone until they really know how to control their board and pull out of a wave properly which is true for all surfers but even more so for those on big boards.

90 percent or more of the people surfing big stand up boards are beginners who often don't have a clue. I know, I was one a few years ago.

Back to the topic at hand, I sometimes have people get right in my path when I'm paddling for a wave at the point breaks I surf. It only happens when it's crowded and it's almost always a young shortboarder. I can see their frustration being on the inside. I let them have waves but they still do it. I just treat them as an obstacle and try to go around them if possible. I let the old timers do the disciplining and they do a good job of it.

« on: November 19, 2015, 10:02:26 AM »
Assuming he's taking the normal route across at the right time of year,

He won't be paddling into the wind much. It's a downwinder all the way across.

He'll be pretty far south so he won't likely be cold.

There won't be much for storms. The weather is fairly docile and predictable during the trade wind season. Hundreds of sailboats make the crossing every year. Some as small as 20 feet.

I see now. It's what they call a reversing falls here in New England assuming that the rapids go in the other direction when the tide turns. There are a few in Maine and New Brunswick.

I was just going to say that.

It doesn't look tidal at all to me. All I see is some big rapids.

I've been using an 83 sq in Kialoa Pipes as my surf paddle for about six months now and am really happy with it.

I'm 6' 1"  165 pounds and have it cut to 1" above my head which seems perfect.

I tested the Insanity and didn't like the large diameter round shaft. I also didn't like the ridge down the center of the blade which affected the paddles hydrodynamics.

I liked the Pipes so much I bought another one for my flatwater/downwind paddle and cut that to 6" over my head.

Before these I had a Kialoa Methane for about two years. Over time I found the 94 sq in blade on the Methane to be too large. Downsizing to 83 was a good decision.

The M-14 color is called Ice Blue,  not Aqua.
