I think he's talking crap.

Are you thinking JLs surf like crap???

Much of the industry used to build them like JL. Remember Surftech surfboards, Randy Frenches company. After Seatrend.

Everyone moved away from that construction because they surfed like crap. Surftech tired to save itself with constructions that felt better, but too late. You don't see Surftech in any surf shops anymore. They used to be everywhere.

Bamboo surfs a little nicer.

Plain old glass over much denser foam surfs best, but Jimmy doesn't talk about that.

He told the truth, but not the whole truth.

Now we've got Innegra in lots of boards. Hammer proofing without any sandwich.

I'm happy with both my Flows. Superior quality of build. Shaped by the master. Affordably priced. What's not to like?

Night Wing, how about a Snowy Owl instead of a Barn Owl?

Awesome news.

Wouldn't you know this would happen right after selling three boards on Craigslist over the last few months. The next board I sell will be posted here first. Just one more reason to send people to the Zone.

He's only 5'8" 151 pounds.

Will helicopter tape work on a wet surface?

Sure. One of the ways to install it as rail tape is the wet method, where you first spray the rail with water before sticking it on. Once you squeegee the water out, it's stuck. It takes a bit of effort to get it to come off. The great thing is that it leaves no glue behind.

Helicopter tape would work excellent as a patch.

It's very tough, sticks really well and doesn't leave any glue behind.

Hey Badger, that seems like a really good idea and I already have some.

I already had some too. It's now in the spare parts box that I keep in my car. It might come in handy someday.

If you do paint, you might want to cover it with some Rail Saver Pro or similar product.

Even the best paints will just come off again with use.

Regular spray paint won't adhere well. Even Montana will come off with just your fingernail. Don't waste your time with that.

You need a two part epoxy paint topped with an automotive clear coat.

You might be better off to just sand the paint off the rail and leave it white.

Foil SUP / Re: Kai Lenny Downwind SUP Foil

Bruno Andre did this at least five years ago!

I saw some surf vids but no downwind vids. Everybody knows it can be done on a wave.

The question is.... Did Bruno Andre use a foil on a downwinder?

Apparently he was asked about it, but did he do it and was he the first?

Downwinding on a foil, if it can be done with any consistency, will mark an important turning point in the history of stand up.

I'm still loving my Flow 8'4, at least on clean days. I knew it would be a bit of a challenge in rough water. That's why I ordered an 8'10 as well. That board should be here this week. It will be a lot more stable.

I have the 8'4 set up as a quad with two 50/50 center fins as the rears and all four fins the same size (94). I think it works great that way even though a few naysayers don't approve.

Hey Cleveland,

Is there any documentation to prove that? I can't find anything in my searches.

C) Bummer no leash.

So true. Foils are hard to catch swimming. They drift crazy fast.
Especially if you're not wearing a leash like Kai.  Good thing he had all those support boats around.

Falling off at 20mph / 32kph tied to that thing, is not something I'd suggest... This needs some new thinking... Maybe one of those fabric sea anchors that is attached to the board and the anchor is stuffed in a pouch around your waist. When you fall off the anchor gets pulled out the pouch and slows the board down..

I've actually given that sea anchor idea a lot of thought but haven't come up with any practical way of doing it without it being a lot of hassle each time you fall.

A broken leash in high winds could easily spell death. DJ came very close back in 2010. I keep this post of his handy as a reminder.

Gear Talk / Re: rail tape recommendations?
« on: May 01, 2016, 07:13:28 PM »
I don't like the way that RSPro rail tape chews at your paddles. It's too abrasive IMO. I'd very much like a less abrasive version.

I've been using RSP for years and my carbon Kialoa paddles show no sign of wear. My newer Sunova paddle is also undamaged.

I sometimes like to run my paddle along the rail just to hear the sound it makes.

I can't imagine anyone hitting the rail so much that it would actually chew up the paddle.
