Sunova SUP / Sunova retail price question.
« on: December 15, 2015, 09:53:38 PM »
Are the prices on the Sunova website in Australian dollars or US dollars?

I am really liking the 14' Search.

I want a 14 footer that can downwind and surf waves equally well. This design looks as close to perfect as I've seen yet.

My M-14 surfs pretty well but the shape leans a little more towards the downwind side of the scale. The Search is thinner and a bit wider which equals it out nicely for both disciplines and like the M-14, the fin placement is right where it should be for surfing.

Is there any chance these will be available in the States anytime soon?

SUP General / Greg Noll's Search for surf
« on: October 20, 2015, 01:46:39 PM »
I just watched the documentary of Greg Noll and Bruce Brown reminiscing about Noll's Search for Surf movies. I really enjoyed it.

Definitely worth watching if you are into surf history. I apologize if it's been posted before.

SUP General / What's the best paddle stance for surf?
« on: September 08, 2015, 10:24:00 AM »
I'm trying to dial in my paddling stance for when I'm paddling around in the line up and about to catch a wave.

Right now I have my front foot a little forward of the handle and the back foot behind the handle. My feet are about 8 inches apart and about four inches to either side of the centerline of the board.

The more I move to line both feet up with the center of the board, the more unstable I get. I can't seem to find a stance that feels comfortable and would like some input on where my feet should be.

Where do you experienced SUSers stand for paddling around and catching waves.

Random / Balance issues with Zocor (Simvastatin)?
« on: June 08, 2015, 01:15:57 PM »
My doctor put me on 20 mg of Zocor aka Simvastatin to lower my cholesterol. My LDL is 170 and my HDL is 57.

I've been experiencing some unpleasant side effects such as loss of energy and loss of memory. It also seems to affect my balance and the last few times out surfing have been more difficult.

Is anyone else having a similar experience with Zocor or statin drugs in general? Also has anyone found an alternative that they are happy with such as Red Yeast Rice which is supposedly a natural statin?

I've been researching statin drugs and not liking what I'm hearing. Dr Duane Graveline has some very convincing evidence that statins are not only bad for us but they are unnecessary.

I don't know who to believe, the doctors prescribing these drugs who are backed by the pharmaceutical industry or the doctors who say they are bad for us and we don't need to take them.

SUP General / Sups on Ralphs pics.
« on: May 10, 2015, 02:30:36 PM »
Ralphs pics has some cool West Coast SUP shots that he put on this weeks blog, showing his friend Sam George and others. I think Ralph (Mr Anti-SUP of years past) is slowly coming around, but the question still remains, will we ever see Ralph on a Stand Up?

These guys hiked to this spot and had it all to themselves.

For those who don't know who Ralph is, he has an East Coast surf blog out of NH called Ralphs pic of the week.

I picked up the Stun Gun 9'2 about a month ago and more recently a World Wide 8'5. I had to wait for the snow to melt and the sun to come out to take some decent pics.

I'm still fairly new at surfing so I can't really give them much of a review.

I've ridden the Stun Gun four or five times. 9'2 X 30.25 124L. So far I love it. I was hoping it would be a bit more stable but I think I'll get used to it in time. It felt a bit sluggish at first in our slow mushy waves but switching it over to quad gave it a lot more speed and improved it quite a bit. With it's narrow tail and longish outline, it not great in tiny waves. I bought it for when it's chest high or bigger.

The World Wide 8'5 X 30 125L is awesome. It's actually more stable than the Stun Gun. I turned that into a Quad as well. I've only ridden it a few times in less than perfect conditions. It seems like it will surf anything from knee high mush to overhead although I think I'm going to prefer the Stun Gun in the bigger stuff just because it feels like it will have more control at higher speeds.

I put NSI tail handles on both. I really like these. They stick extremely well. I had one on my Angulo Surfa 9'4 for the past year and it never failed even in overhead conditions. I sold the Angulo to get the Stun Gun.

The brand new Jimmy Lewis site is up and running finally. It's about time.

I think some of it is still under construction.

Gear Talk / Pics of the new JL World Wide 8' 1
« on: March 17, 2015, 06:13:54 AM »
At least it's new to us here in the states. How come all the other countries get the new JL boards way before the US does?

Seems like England, France, Italy, Australia, Japan and Taiwan all got these boards last summer and fall while we have to wait til Spring of this year. Their websites are mostly up to date while the US website still shows old boards from 2013/14.

SUP General / Volume vs Stability going from 155L to 125L.
« on: January 12, 2015, 02:29:09 PM »
What kind of stability change should I expect going from 155L to 125L?

To put it into perspective, let's say we have two SUP surfing boards of equal dimensions, 9' X 30".

One board is 155L and the other is 125L. Rider is intermediate, weight 155 lbs, which is the same as me.

From what I've read, 125 liters should be plenty of volume for my weight.

Should I expect much loss of stability from the lower volume board compared to the higher volume board?

Sneak Peeks, Rumors, and Wish Lists / 2015 Jimmy Lewis World Wide?
« on: January 08, 2015, 12:19:44 PM »

I'm going to a shorter board this year and the new World Wide 8' 5" looks perfect. I trust Jimmy to create a great board.

Has anyone ridden one yet?

I'd like to hear any pros or cons before I put my money down on one.

Random / Recent posts feature.
« on: May 15, 2014, 05:04:10 PM »
The "Recent Posts" feature of the forum is useless. It only holds ten posts. You'd have to check the forum every two hours for it to be useful because it fills up fast.

Why not have it hold all the recent posts or at least 20 or 30 so we don't have to go through each category every time looking for recent posts and replies?

I traded in my last years Surfa 10'4" for a new this years 9'4" at Cinnamon Rainbows.

This is the AST version. My previous board was the EST. This should be a little more rugged so I shouldn't have to worry about denting it as much, yet it feels almost as light. I'm guessing it's under 25 pounds. I'll weigh it tomorrow.

I love the graphics. The new shape looks nice. It has a little less rocker this year. It has the new ledge style handle. Just waiting for this wind to die down enough to use it.

Gear Talk / 2014 Angulo SUP site
« on: April 15, 2014, 07:56:43 AM »
I've been trying for months to see what the 2014 Angulo sups look like.

If you google "2014 Angulo SUP" all that comes up is the old 2012 site.

I contacted them to ask why the site hasn't been updated and they sent me this link...

http://www.angulohawaiisup.com/

It only comes up in a search if you add the word Hawaii.

The new Surfa looks nice.

My new M-14 has finally arrived.

I've only done two six mile flatwater test runs just to get the feel of it but so far I love it.

It's very fast and stable. Maybe not race board fast but pretty close. It seems like it wants to plane out on even the tiniest downwind ripples. I can't wait to see what it does in some real waves.

14' x 28" x 6.3"   290 L   29lbs

I'll do a full review once I get a few downwind runs in and see how it surfs.
