My fourth King's Custom arrived at Logan last Thursday. Picked it up - hand carried to my truck by a fellow surfer - auspicious and drove to Hampton NH for sea trials!

Dave Daum at King's spent a long time tweaking the bottom contours with me. Entry convex belly reduced, single concave wider and less deep, double concave starting sooner and going into hard v all the way through the fifth fin box to the tail.

A little less entry rocker, softer rails in the front third, and a hard edge in a thinner tail starting a little earlier.

The dimensions are 8'4" x 31" x 4.25" x 115 liters. My previous summer board was 7'11" x 31.25" x 4.5" x 117 liters.

My intention was to go a little longer in order to be able to actually paddle a little bit instead of having to sit inside with the young buckos on their short boards.

Glassed with 1.0 foam, 6 6 4  top and 6 6 bottom. Five FCS II boxes. White, not clear, orange pad, orange pin lines. Weighs 18 pounds with pad, fins, and RSP.

First session was in shin high onshore conditions at Jenness. 16 year old kids with their girls learning and a 67 year old fart groveling on a new board.

Actually caught waves, and learned that all of the changes were working to perfection. Faster, more stable, and not quite as SK8Ee as the 7'11".

The surf gods conspired on my behalf as I got another session in at first beach in RI in choppy conditions and was amazed by how well it worked there in small choppy conditions.

Will give an update on cleaner bigger waves if we ever see 'em!

NorthEast / Island (of Rhode) Paradise
« on: March 22, 2015, 09:22:49 AM »
The weather and surf gods delivered a treat yesterday in the tropical paradise of Rhode Island.

Off-shore winds, a mysterious orange object in the sky, and WAVES.

Three different and usually unreliable forecasts all called for a rising swell peaking around chest to shoulder high with off-shore winds until the late afternoon sea breeze.

Rhode trip. Took my Crocodile and had a great session. Shared some waves with A.J. and Dietlin. Several prone longboarders and shortboarders also in attendance.

Sid, of Waterbrothers, is very conservative and reported that it got up to shoulder high before the sea breeze kicked in..

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / New King's 8'8" WCT Custom
« on: February 24, 2015, 11:32:23 AM »
Another beautiful board from Dave Daum and the folks at King's Paddlesports.

It is a custom 8'8"  x  30.75"  x  4.4"  x  127 liters. The starting point for the design was their WCT model with modifications based on my experiences with my 7'11" Lazer.

We removed some of the nose rocker, softened the rails, added a diamond tail, and put special secret sauce on the bottom contours. Vacuum bagged, with a stringer, and innegra lamination with 5 FCS II fin boxes.

It is my third King's custom and I can't say enough about the time Dave so graciously spent with me on the CAD design phase. If I could shape this is exactly how it would come out.

Will give a riding review after s couple of sessions!

Here are some pics of the incredible board that Dave Daum designed for me! We went through several lengthy CAD sessions and two different iterations before this MAGIC board showed.

Had a minor nose shipping ding which I was all obsessed with. Did I need innegra cloth et cetera et cetara? Called Dave and he said put some sun cure on and go surf it. He wanted to know how it rode!

The board is based loosely on King's Laser template. It is 7'11 5/8" long x 31.25" wide x 4.3" thick x 117 liters volume. I went for the vacuum bagged innegra construction. With pad, four Al Merrick fins, and my STC style inlaid arch-stomper it weighs 15.8 pounds!

Bottom contours are a variation on Dave's WCT bottom. Little entry belly to subtle single concave to double concave and serious v in the tail. Seven inches of nose rocker combined with four inches of tail rocker!

Dave told me this is what a Daniel Hughes board on steroids might look like! I told him he has created the sickest and loosest 117 liter 7'11" on the planet!

My beautiful 10' Crocodile old school noserider from Dave Daum at King's has been in my possession since Arthur. Shout out to Dave Cropper at Cinnamon Rainbows in New Hampshire for taking very good care of me once again!

The Croc is 10' x 31.5" x 4" x 127 liters and weighs 26.5 pounds with pad and a monster fin. Dave D. had made one for himself that I found out about while having a conversation about an Ian Cairns One to Five short sup.

He designed it with a step deck, nose concave, dual concaves in the rear, and plenty of tail rocker. His personal board was glassed very light and narrower and thinner.

I asked for a heavier glass job as I was trying to capture the feel of old school longboards, and because of our shorebreak conditions here on the cape - sand with rocks. Never have issues with pressure dings on the deck as I only weigh 150 or less; but I have plenty of pressure dings on the underside towards the nose!

I have ridden the board in waves from double over ankle to head high and does exactly what I had hoped for. Turns easily from the tail as the tail kick combined with the low swing weight makes for quick turns.

Dave calls it the Crocodile because it is under water when you are paddling. It is a slug to paddle because of the low volume, extreme deck doming and super thin rails. However, once you have caught a wave you "are sittin on top of the world". He has only made three of them! I am so fortunate to have one here on the cape which is a long way from San Diego.

Oh yeah it noserides pretty well!

SUP General / What Do They Really Weigh ??
« on: June 27, 2014, 01:52:22 PM »
Quiver weigh in all with fins and pads 8'2" Rawson 18.4 4 big fins; 8'8" Angulo AST 24.4 3 fins; 9' Angulo carbon 20.4 five light fins; 9'4" Rawson 20 four light fins; 9'8" Hobie CM LB 19.9 one huge noserider fin; 12'6" Exocet Marlin carbon 29.4 with big Kai Lenny fin.

That is what they really weigh. What is the real weight of your quiver? Inquiring minds want to know!!

My new custom Pat Rawson Impala SS just arrived from the Pete and the boys at Hawaii Glass in perfect condition at Logan in Boston. It is the second board I ordered from Pat and both times they arrived in mint condition.

The dimensions are 8'2" x 32" x 4 3/8" x 127 CV. I put a pad that I had ordered - low budget - from quicksilver and paddled around Lovers Lake - no worries. Next went for a paddle in flatware chop - no falling Buenos!

Time for a surf at a well known local spot here on CC. My first wave was right in front of a well known shop owner; bottom turn followed by a little snap off the top! This board flat out rips and is stable to boot - no failing or flopping.

The quad only configuration combined with the thick, but razor sharp, Mo Fiestas tail leads to easy turn initiation with positive drive and acceleration when you stand on it.

Pat is a true master shaper and created a geezer short board that works. Mo on steroids!

One month from wire transfer to my garage!

Feel my short board groveling skills waking up! Hope so. 8) 8) 8)

Flatwater and Touring / MrBigs Not-So Excellent Misadventure
« on: May 25, 2014, 06:14:45 PM »
The Mysterious Island was calling me. Cyclops, Weed, and Creek gave me directions and two possible launch sites.

Drive to Osterville, launch at Bridge Street, go straight to inlet and turn left. Am in the Ocean paddling into a 20 kt SE wind with serious chop. Marlining at its best. Paddle until I see another inlet and turn left and then right.

At a bridge turn left - current and wind at my back. Ahh, life is good! Ha, am now in a dead end pond, the fin catches and I am in black gooey tar up to my waist. Holy crap, primitive brain not liking this at all! Stand on the nose and pole slowly like a Venetian gondolier.

Back to the bridge an turn, yeah I did it again, left. Followed this to the end. Never found Grande Isle. Had to retrace my steps minus the tarpit. Six hours of character development. Humble pie and crow. Yum yum.

Good thing I wasn't with Lewis and Clark. Creek created treasure map below. LOL!

Sessions / Spring is Here!
« on: April 03, 2014, 05:01:01 PM »
Just had a beautiful peacefully serene paddle on Lovers Lake. Perfect glass and I could see the reflection of the new moon for the complete cicrcumnavigation of this little lake. At one point I saw ripples, but there was no sign of any wildfowl. All of a sudden a little head popped up and a beaver checked me out and submerged immediately. Splash, and another appeared. Have to keep an eye out for beaverettes later this spring. The nesting pair of swans are back from wintering on Pleasant Bay as my training facility froze forever this year. The loons are around and about ,and there was light until 7:30 or so. T.S. Elliot said that April is the cruelest month, but not tonight!

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / New Angulo 8'8" Surfa
« on: March 06, 2014, 04:02:13 PM »
Just picked up a new 2014 Angulo Surfa 8'10" today. Met Josh Angulo and his wife  off cape and drove away with a carbon slightly used expo board. 8'8" x  32" x 4" single wing round tail. Bottom contours are slight belly in the nose going to slight wide concave shifting to shallow v ending in deep v from just in front of the fins to the tail which has a very hard edge. Futures fins in thruster configuration - no quadraphonics on this bad boy! Volume is listed at 136 cv which seemed accurate based on my brief flat water maiden voyage today since surf has omomentarily left the building. Handle is the first one I've been able to use with my 7mm mittens. Nothing like taking your gloves off in the winter to carry your board because the handle is way too small.  Supthecreek took a pic, he might put it up.

Can't wait to surf it in some waves and will post my observations. RI a possibility this weekend  - oops jinx my bad. Wow my first ever pic posted from my tablet. Neo-luddite success!

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Exocet 12'6" Marlin Carbon
« on: December 20, 2013, 02:41:56 PM »
Well I did it. After much due diligence and reading as many posts, old and new, regarding touring type boards, I pulled the trigger on an Exocet 12'6" green Marlin carbon BIG board for Mr Big! Had it out today in monster, horrible  chop on the Bay of Pleasantness. It felt so different and bizarre, but once I let it find it's own way I never fell. Amazing headway into the wind and crud, and a little taste of why folks get all excited about downwinding. A little helicopter tape on the rails, and NAPA door edge molding on my Hulu and we will be to go. And I did sup surf this morning, fun on the schnozzle of the Hobie 10'6" while my buddy was ripping on his 8'10" Santa Barbara. Water 43, air tropical 48!

Sessions / Ice is Here!!
« on: December 13, 2013, 02:10:49 PM »
Went out for a little training session on my Lopez 9' with my new Kialoa  GL Hulu Sl paddle on a little freshwater lake. O'Neill Assualt semi-dry - check; neoprene Ugh boots - check; snowboard gloves with neoprene summer gloves as liners - check; neoprene duck hat with wool hat over - check. Walked down to the lake and my launch area frozen. No worries  - oh no Mr. Bill, Dr. Von Kuckenstein slipped and fell flat on his butt. Water in gloves. Then off for a paddle in 20 knot west wind air 25 and the lake is 50% frozen. It's thin I can break through to the other side! Wrong, Gerry Lopez boards and paddles not good at icebreaking. Where is my 40 pound Dolsey when I need it! Sure am glad I  dressed for sup surfin today! Crow and humble pie go well together. No pics no vids!
