About a month ago my King's Accelerator was bitten by a rather large shark.

I donated the board to the Shark Conservancy here in Chatham.

Through a wonderful set of synchronous events I am getting a replacement from Dave Daum at King's and the incredible people at the Shark Conservancy are picking up the tab.

The things that we will do to get a new board! LOL!

Just got some pics from Dave which I am going to post as a tease!

When I get it will do a much more comprehensive review, but I really felt like sharing this unexpected turn of fortune.

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / New 404 14' Go-Go
« on: July 27, 2017, 03:16:23 PM »
Just received this 404 14' x 27" x 5.6" x 247.9 liter Go Go!

A new design for Bop style in and out the surf racing, surfing waves, and stability.

Slight single concave the full length of the board, a little nose and tail rocker, and subtle rocker through the middle.

Danny Ching informs us it the most stable of the line.

Will report more on it's on water performance.

Downwind and Racing / Humble Pie at the Narragansett Eco-Challange
« on: July 17, 2017, 11:30:57 AM »
The seventh annual Waterman's Eco-Challenge was a fantastic event at the Pier in Narraganset RI last Saturday. One mile swim, three mile kayak, three mile SUP.

You can mix and match as you choose.

I decided to enter the three mile SUP and looking forward to having some fun on my Starby Race.

Oh oh! Beach start BOP style through the surf and three miles in the ocean with a small swell running.

Much to my chagrin I quickly discovered I could NOT stand on the race in the ocean at all - not even for a second!

Necessity is the mother of invention! Borrowed a huge 11' Pau Hana Big Easy in the new bulletproof construction. 11' x 32" x 5" x a million liters! HEAVY sumbitch too!

No problem no worries - slow but no falling at all. Discovered I could catch runners and little glides on the Beast!

Finished with a little fade, walk up, and some tip time!

The real racers dominated on some beautiful NSP ocean boards!

Hung with K-Dog, Kristin, PDLSFR, Mark P., David C., Levy, and many others on the beach. Fun, fun, fun!

Humble pie never tasted so good..

And I absolutely suck toads in the ocean on a race board! No shocks from the Cyborg Inplant though and my HR maxed at 190..

Downwind and Racing / New 404 V3 Mini Report
« on: June 29, 2017, 12:13:50 PM »
The Fifth Annual Shark Paddle in Orleans went off without a hitch last Sunday.

Matt Rivers from the Pumphouse Surf Shop crushed the field in the six mile elite on his new 404 12'6" V3.

Jamie Rivers from Pumphouse Surf started late and still buried everyone in the two mile on her 404 12'6" V3.

Hummingbird Heart borrowed Matt's board as he was not looking forward to trying to stay upright on his 2015 Starboard 12'6" Race. I managed to finish third, with a max HR of 191 and actually touched 7 mph at the start.

The 404 V3 was really sweet. Now Matt and Jamie own a dog 🐶 Tilly, and the board I borrowed was the wide Tilly model. Perfect for Tippy Wan Ken Obi.

Very fast, but without any of the nervous twitchyness that makes the Starby annoying in anything other than perfect glass (what the heck is that anyhow?).

Primary stability ok, with a much softer overall feel than many of the other boards I have owned or borrowed. Secondary instability was really excellent as there were some boatwakes which the Starby and I do not do well with to say the least.

Brushed carbon, light - no scale sorry - and if you like green you will love it!.

404 also makes an LTD which is new this year, with more rocker, and the prone style nose which has become very popular on open ocean boards. A 14' was also available for me to borrow, but both Matt and Jamie convinced me the V3 would be much faster.

We will never know! But, I actually led the field, to the first buoy, until Jamie flew by, and repassed my honorable opponent at the finish to finish third.

No shocks from the ICD thank God!

Dave Daum and the King's crew are on the Foil Wave.

Here's a pic of their foil and the box to install a Tuttle style system.

I believe they also have plate type installs using two fin boxes..

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / King's 8'8" Punisher
« on: March 24, 2017, 12:07:01 PM »
Last summer I worked with Dave Daum at King's on this custom Punisher.

8'8" x 30.75" x 3.75" x 110 liters. Carbon and glass. KTM orange.

Subtle chine rails to tucked soft edge to hard edge starting just before the fins.

Wide channel in nose feeding to single wide subtle concave to slight vee through the fins.

We spent a lot of time discussing the tail. I loved the way my single bump square worked on my Accelerator and insisted that was what would work. We fussed on the depth of the wing and the width of the square tail. It works!

Have ridden it in large oh hurricane swells and one foot mush. The elusive balance between fast and loose is right there.

Another incredible board from Dave Daum and King's!

SUP General / The Sinkah Challange!
« on: March 03, 2017, 02:52:20 PM »
Okay, All of you RaceBoys here it is.

Fire up the GPS, Speed Puck, Vivioactive, or any other gadget that gives accurate speed data.

Get yourself on your sub eight footer and let it rip. How fast does it go? Half a mile is plenty. Low liters preferred.

Paddling a JP slate I got up to 4.2 mph, and averaged 3.6 for three quarters of a mile. And then my HR monitor went off..

The nesting pair of swans were terrified.

The Slate is a dawg..

No DW tom foolery.. ;D  ;D  ;D

Recently I saw on FB a new model called the Accelerator from Dave Daum at King's.
My Cardiologist said it was just the thing for summer fun..

We designed an 8'4" by 30.75" x 3.75" x 105 liters Accelerator. Glassed 4 4 4 with a patch top; 4 4 4 bottom with a new Topcoat that increases flex. 5 FCS II boxes.

Very different than the Lasers I have had prior. Less entry rocker, a slightly wider nose, less tail rocker, and a bump wing square tail that is more pulled in than the wide tails on the Lasers.

The bottom is not the usual single to double concave, but has a slight shallow single  concave to subtle panel vee in the tail.

Dave had made one for a team rider and couldn't get it back.

Air Cargo to Logan; perfect condition and pray for surf!

My initial paddle in a lake was scary. Water lapping everywhere and a sinking tail. A bridge too far?

Went for a surf in RI and found that it does catch waves a little easier than my other 8'4" which I believe is because of the reduced rocker.

The bump wing makes it turn easier than my 7'11' with a carvier feel. And it is fast!

Will report further as I get it out in different conditions. Paddled out at the local just as the wind came on shore. Strictly a balance training session. Much to my surprise managed to stay upright more than swimming!

And my ischemic heart healed and my ejection fraction went from 20 (UGH) to 60 (WOW) over the winter. No stents in the future!!! 😄

SUP General / Sudden Cardiac Arrest!
« on: July 01, 2015, 08:44:00 AM »
Last Monday I had planned to meet PADLSFR at first beach in Rhode Island for an early morning session. Off shore clean and hopefully uncrowded.

Dawn patrol with my 8'4" King's and my 8'10" Angulo in the truck and my antique short john as the water is finally warming up.

Paddled out at 6:30 caught a couple and..

I'm becoming conscious very slowly, but I'm in Rhode Island Hospital. Sign on the wall told me my name. Most peculiar Momma!

I learn that my heart had stopped, and I was found face down in the water by PADLSFR, and Cory. The dragged me to shore, started CPR and were joined by another CPR trained waterman.

My ribs still hurt like hell, but a small price to pay!

Ambulance EMT lads showed up and zapped me with paddles which finally created a pulse, but no breathing yet.

The red weed at first is really toxic, don't eat the yellow snow, and don't inhale the red tide even if you are a militant vegeteranio!

Anti bionics eventually cleared up the infection and a small defibrillator box was installed. Cyborg Man is alive!

Back at my house and feeling incredibly grateful for the support I have received from my family and friends as well as the fantastic medical types at the hospital..

CAN'T GET IT WET!

But the longer term prognosis is excellent. I am researching impact vests, and new suits. My ancient shorty shredded. There is a theory that my "sacrifice" created some surf. LOL!

Almost death, near death..There are many mysteries..

Thanks to everyone who brought me back!!

My new Ed Angulo custom 8'10" x 31" x 3 75" x 127 liters with the Cannibal proprietary CorVac lamination was delivered to the Pumphouse.

Came with a crunched nose but as I used to do shipping ding repairs wasn't a big deal. Fix the ding, get some model paint to match, put on the pad, and install small quads. Pray for surf!

Small waves yesterday on the Cape revealed the new East Coast Rocker has produced a much faster board than his earlier designs. Easy to turn, fun, fun, fun.

Today in RI at first had a great time in small stiff offshore conditions. Made some late drops from the stomper - even got some props from the kids on their short boards. Imagine a geezer turning a sup from the tail.

Will tell more when I know more!
