Paddle edging just became more urgent.

If you haven't read Jim Brewers blog, his leg was cut to the bone and through his tendon by his paddle blade.

Don't surf without edging on your blade!

Blade manufacturers need to take action, or face lawsuits someday from this suit happy country.

Rick,

I think SUP is unique in that it attracts people with kayak, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and surfing backgrounds, so we get a fun diverse blend of people brought into this.

Therefore what board stokes your soul, may be different than what others look for.

It certainly makes the SUP community exciting.

My surfing friend's little daughter is trying to SUP. Her issue with boards, is not being able to turn them. He even tried taking the fins out.

So I'd say shorter, would help a lot.

Gear Talk / 9'6 PSH Big Boy Ripper
« on: November 06, 2008, 02:24:54 AM »
To Motopilot and others who may have tried it.....

How does it compare to the 9'3 Ripper and 9'6 All Around? I asked about these two, because I have surfed them. For me, the 9'6 All Around was very nice, but the 9'3 Ripper is mind blowing and in a different league. The 9'3 feels like a real shortboard.

I could surf a 9'3 Ripper at my weight, but not sure it could serve as a one board quiver for me. But if I went up to the big boy ripper, would I be giving up some magic.

That board that Jim is banging on is my first 10' Model.      That comes out of the factory we use.         For regular surfboards I prefer hand glassed.   On SUP boards I have magic boards in both hand glassed and pop outs.      Our team guys like Ikaika Kalama also prefer both with his best ever Sunset Beach session on a pop out.    Gerry Lopez LOVES our 9-3 POP OUT.     To say a pop out is not as good as a hand glassed board is not accurate.     Some brands chip a lot easier than others but I can assure you, take a stick to most pop outs and you will get chipping at the most.   Take a stick to hand glassed boards and you will get very damaging holes that keep you from surfing.    If I had to choose paint chipping over water sucking dings, I'll take paint chipping and still be in the water.    Vacuum bagging a skin on a board will give you good results in durability like a pop out.   These can be glassed over with pigments etc...   BUT, are you willing to pay a lot more for it, wait a lot longer for it?

We use and give plenty work to people in China.    We also do the same for people in San Diego.   We also do the same for people in our home of Hawaii.     We do many types of construction on our boards.    For some reason, how others are building boards or their finished products doesn't bother me at all.    I see many well built boards out there.    Some are built not so well...    Some are just horrible.     No big deal.     Educate yourself then buy.        People learn as they go.

I agree.

Blane, I've often seen chips that "I think" were from the paint not liking to be flexed when the board saw an impact. I wonder if adding the paint additive that allows it to flex would help. This paint additive is used when painting plastic body panels on cars.

My 2 cents from a former windsurfers perspective dating back 30 years.

Hated my polyester polyurethane foam windsurfers. Spent more time getting repaired, than on the water. Worst crap construction ever for BIG boards.

Then some cleaver pro (Ken Winner and his shaper) glassed epoxy over styrofoam and dominated world cup. Epoxy construction was born. Although it was a total disaster at the time. Boards blew up, or fell apart.

Randy French tried to mold boards at Cobra using polyurethane inside epoxy. Major disaster. They all blew up like balloons.

Sandwich construction saved the eps/epoxy market. At the time, clear epoxy resin had not yet been invented. Paint was required to cover the ugly yellow resin and prevent UV from killing it.

Then along comes Greg Loehr to invent clear resin, but it still wasn't as strong as the old yellow stuff, and it came from the US, so the yellow stuff remained the choice for Asian construction.

That is how we got to today's pop out construction. Or so my poor memory thinks  ;D

I've tried the new improved EPS blanks bare glassed with epoxy. Yuk, averaged one ding per month. Had 6 repairs when I sold it.

All my other boards are tired and true sandwich windsurfer style construction pop outs. Ding repairs are cake. A little Marine-tex and touch up paint and it looks way better than my hand glassed board repairs with piss crap resin. The ding kits they sell with so called clear resin are in fact crap, and turn piss yellow within 2 weeks of sun exposure.

To make life even better, I suggest all manufactures give out their Pantone paint codes.

Give me pop outs or give me death!

The world according to me.  ;)

I think my Malama was sealed with polyester resin.

I surf with a guy using the 9'0 and he weighs the same as you.

He rips on it. It's his one board quiver.

Photos here.

My wife rides it. What do you want to know?

Basically, its the only production board I know about small enough for light weights.

It improved her surfing 200%.

The chick paddling is striking the identical pose of the girl Blane sponsors. That particular photo is not on Blane's site anymore.

There are two photos on that site that look identical to photos seen on PSHs site. Photo shopped?

Linter, your web site, it takes all kinds is pretty cool. Do you live in the NY area, or do you just travel a lot?

Hey, All:

1)  Get permission from the individual posters.

2)  Do it but give credit to the posters, no further permission needed.

Nice web site.

My vote is number 1 first. If no response within one week, then go to number 2.

SUP General / Re: Dave Kalama signs with Naish.

I hope Dave can talk them into more colors than yellow. Naish's only mistake in my opinion is making all boards the same color.
