Travel, Trips, Destinations / Re: hawaii - car rental suitable for SUP ????
« on: February 09, 2010, 04:43:13 AM »
hi guys

any tips on renting a vehicle in oahu and/or maui suitable for
travel with a  9-03 SUP  - either inside (no passenger) or on top
(need a rack i guess)

what sort of vehicle ? where to get it ?

i am from UK and not familiar with US vehicles and agents dont seem
too helpful

thanks

I rented a mini van in Oahu. The 9'3 fit inside easy. Just keep checking car rental web sites. They often drop rates when one has surplus cars. I've always found a van cheap at the last minute. I reserve one well ahead to be safe, then keep checking rates as the trip date approaches. Then switch reservation when something cheaper comes up.

mik911, C4's leash strings break because they use the through the board and finbox style leash. The line get cut at the deck. Dyneema line is very hard to cut, even with scissors.

You'll be twice as stable each time out, so get out there and enjoy. It's no big deal. I learned in the ocean too and fell hundreds of times. It was a blast.

Use kitesurfing leader line. Check your local kite shop.

It's 1/8 dyneema. It will last years.

Practice on some scrap. I printed a logo and laminated it under some scrap. The colors look different after lam, so test it first.

Mine didn't run. It was a Canon inkjet.

India forms new climate change body
India has established its own body to monitor the effects of global warming because it “cannot rely” on the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the group headed by its own Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr R K Pachauri.

(Headline today, from the Guardian, I believe)

Interesting.

Tim

Now that's funny. India, the most polluted stinky place I've ever been should worry about itself and stop polluting. 500 ft before landing the pollution enters the plane and gasses you.

That is terrible. With all of the water board sports I would think that kiteboarding you would be leset likely to encounter sharks

Actually more likely. We are human fishing lures.

When you crash the kite, you lose your board. The technique for getting it back, is to stick one arm down in the water like a rudder, then turn your body into a human sailboat while the kite pulls you upwind. I'm still waiting for the shark to take a bite from my arm too.

Downwind and Racing / Re: Raceboard Tails - Pin or Squash
« on: February 04, 2010, 03:33:51 AM »
I think pins are more efficient, but squash is more stable allowing for a narrower board.

The questions with any design might be

1) wider board with pin faster?
2) narrower board with squash faster?

The wife and are travelling to Oahu and Maui late march early April for two weeks also. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Keep hearing about folks getting tickets for 35k miles on Delta. I can only only seem to find the ones for 65k. Anyone got the inside scoop on this?

I got mine on Delta for 35K last year. Actually got 2 seats at 35K each. The cool new calendar they had on-line showed all the dates and miles required for specific dates. It made it easy. But also, don't forget you can get Delta to book you on partner airlines using Delta miles, but you have to call special number for Medallion fliers to get those deals. I booked 5 months ahead to get it.

Gear Talk / Re: Anyone make a good longboard shaped 10'er?
« on: February 01, 2010, 11:39:21 AM »
Good point, DW.

I wonder what the refinements are that're making this possible.  Do you know?

My wild ass guess.......
This new generation of wide boards allow the rails to be thinned out without creating radical feeling dome under your feet. My first true longboard SUP was the 10'6 Kyle Bernhardt back 2 seasons ago. At about 28 wide (or less) the deck was so heavily domed it hurt my ankles. But the board worked well. I just was too uncomfortable with such a steep dome in the deck.

Wide also eliminates the need for step rails.

Linter,

You can't go by thickness numbers. My 9'5 Mana is thick, but it acts thin. The rails are underwater. So even though my board is thick and wide compared to my previous board, it sure feels thin, stable, and very surfable.

I sure hope you get a chance to demo because its getting harder to judge boards by dimensions as SUPs get more refined.

Here you go.

The rockers are flatter than SUPs.

Here is a good source for buying a lot of them.

http://www.huki.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=74

You need 6 to make a nice net with 1/8 bungee cord.

I prefer to epoxy mine on. Although with the adhesive type they are easier to remove if you change your mind later.

Put your back square to the wind. Stance square. Keeping paddling at a comfortable pace and maintain a comfortable speed. Save your energy for speed busts to be used when your reading of the water in front of you tells you its time to catch a runner.

Walk up and down the deck to trim the nose as needed to match the swells passing under you. You don't want to stick the nose and you don't want it riding too high. You're looking to trim the board so your speed is maintained. This walking the deck happens while on a runner.

Worry about turning later. In the size swell you get, you won't be turning more than 15 degrees anyway.
