Gear Talk / Re: Narrowed first SUP board down to these
« on: July 12, 2010, 05:04:48 PM »
The Naish 11'6 never sold for that much money, unless you're not talking about US dollars.

There was one year when Naish boards were expensive. $1799 and $1899 for basic models. The following year the prices returned to normal levels. They weren't the only brand that had prices jumping around back then. I recall PSH boards jumping to $1550, then dropping. Not sure what caused that season of wacky prices.

Regarding construction, I've seen all brands broken. There are no break proof boards, regardless of what anyone might claim. Naish boards are as good as any out there. You do pay more for better construction within most product lines. I also think several brands were learning what was required construction wise, to survive the unique loads this new sport called SUP placed on surfboards. We hear about fewer issues today than back then.

I don't consider that 11'6 to be super stable. It is very thick, making it less stable due to a high center of gravity for riders of average weight. Maybe at your weight it would sink enough to reduce the wobbles caused by riding high. The 10' Mana would be far more enjoyable.

I'm pretty sure that 11'6 Naish retails for around $1295 today in the AST construction with pad. So it may not be the super deal that shop is claiming.

I think it's DJs fault they deleted the mast insert  ;)

DJ, you should have done this video a year ago and then Naish would never have deleted the insert.  ;D

I never knew it was there.

But really, Naish marketing should be faulted for not promoting this aspect of the Glide.

Gear Talk / Re: Broke my side bite on my Nalu 9'6
« on: July 08, 2010, 03:39:41 AM »
(does is seem to anybody else that naish boards are more prone to broken this and messed-up that than many other boards?  for instance, i've never seen a thread about a broken fin on a starboard, nor one about a defective carry handle that allows 10 lbs of water to soak into the board.  kinda makes me worry about getting one ...)

I'd have to see what's under the fin box on a Starboard to answer that. My bet is it's no different. I have yet to see PVC high density foam blocks used to set side bites. PVC blocks are used on windsurf boards. But they see much higher loads.

If it makes you feel any better, that Naish box is set into a wood sandwich skin. Super tough skin, but underneath, still just EPS. That is a tougher fin box mounting than my custom made in the USA $1700 SUP had. The shaper warned me that some high lift fins can break the box. Oh thanks I thought. Is it too late to cancel  :'(

There have been threads about leaking handles. Especially the plastic ones. You can get a poor bond between plastic and fiberglass. Naish has fiberglass handles, which I think bond better. I think it's a case of shit happens on your friends board.

Gear Talk / Re: Naish Mana -- 35 lbs???
« on: June 29, 2010, 06:47:34 AM »
my buddy just got a 9-5 Mana and today we weighed it.  the sucker came in at 35 lbs.  could it be that heavy or is it taking in water somewhere?

my 10-5 starboard drive, by contrast, weighs 26.5 lbs.

if the 9-5 is 35, i can't imagine what the 10' would be.  oooooffff!

Mine is lighter than my sub vector. I weighed my sub vector at 25 lbs. So mine is probably 23 or 24 lbs. I have felt one real heavy 9'5 Mana. It was a demo owned by the rep. It was also very tail heavy when held by the handle. Tail dragging on the ground heavy. Mine is perfectly balanced from the handle.

Maybe water, or maybe a blem in manufacturing. I noticed some of the windsurf companies publish weight tolerances with their published weight. 2 lb tolerance on my JP Australia windsurfer.

Gear Talk / Re: Naish Bamboo Mana
« on: June 26, 2010, 05:48:35 PM »
Do you know if the older Mana's had a problem with delamination for the reason to add a vent?

Do you think the Mana could support a guy weighing 250lbs, or is that pushing the limits of the 10' Mana?  Mahalo.

Check these photos of a 230 lb guy on the 9'5 Mana, at 1" narrower than the 10' Mana. He has no problems on it, so the 10'0 should be good. http://ncpaddlesurfer.blogspot.com/2010/06/few-snaps-from-this-morning.html

Vents are a cover your ass addition for any manufacturer. Boards don't have issues when the owners are smart. But mix in the uneducated user doing something dumb, like putting the board inside a hot car, or inside a board bag in the hot sun, and something could go wrong and then the manufacturer gets the blame. I wouldn't worry about the older models not having a vent. White and yellow paint doesn't get hot in the sun. Just don't do something dumb with the board that bakes it.

Kaenon for me.

I wear contacts, so I don't see well when light is reduced. The supreme clarity of a Kaenon allows me to see better.

I'm extra sensitive to loss of vision with sunglasses on.

Gear Talk / Re: Putting some deck pad pieces over smooth deck pad??

I little wax works too. I wax my Naish pad. It soaks into the foam and doesn't make the mess you would think it might. It works nice.

Gear Talk / Re: Short Naish boards...
« on: June 24, 2010, 11:40:29 AM »
thanks a lot for this info guys.
the Mana 7'9 looks interesting but i don't want something that wide. i would actually prefer to stick to the longboard style Nalu range and something slightly shorter and wider than the current 9' Nalu would be perfect for me.
being light (155lbs) i can go small, but our waters here are usually quite choppy so the extra width is a big plus.
Naishboy, would you have any pictures of the Hokua 8'4 and 8'10 ?
thanks for the help...

The 9'0 x 29 5/8 wide Mana arrives soon. Next week maybe.

Isn't the black color the result of unpainted carbon fiber skin? Keeping it as light as possible?

You can do it lighter with paint. With paint, you can skip the heavy, clear pretty hot coat, and do a squeegee hot coat lightened with filler. The light weight fillers make it ugly, so paint is required. It's more labor, so it's more expensive than just brushing on some clear resin.

The other factor is customer appeal. Carbon is expensive and if the buyer can't see it, and show it off, it's hard to sell a board for $2500-$3000. But that's what they are worth.

If the buyers were a little more educated, we'd see an end to clear coated carbon and carbon boards could be painted and shapers could get what they deserve for carbon boards.

The Shape Shack / Re: Spraying EPS Blanks
« on: June 20, 2010, 03:27:43 AM »
It's being done, but Blane warned me not to do it over on Swayloks. Due to the huge size of these boards, they just seem more prone to delamination, so it's not worth the risk. Resin tints are a safer solution.

Head over to swayloks and get some exact paint recommendations for your country, if you really want to risk it.

FYI, that 6'6 shortboard on my blog with bamboo .6mm skin turned out 5.5 lbs.

Tell your shaper to vacuum bag .6mm bamboo skin around the whole board. It seems to be the best way to make a board tough enough to withstand the beatings SUPers give them. I too owned a custom EPS board and average one ding repair per month. Our paddles beat the hell out of these boards when we're flopping and getting trashed.

My buddy shaped this one in his garage. He bagged it himself. He had never done bagging or bamboo before this.

There is a good reason PSH, Naish, and others are using bamboo.

If you do the PVC sandwich, then you get the dreaded pop-out hollow bouncy ride. You don't want that. Wood is the best answer until something better comes along.
