That thing looks fun!

yes, it’s patchy. Riding thermal cloud based wind. Cloud blocks the sun, wind goes dead. Stuck at sea.

I’ve always been able to ride all day on foil, if I can get up just once. I make sure I never fall, or fall off foil.

The new setup takes me into dangerous territory. One mistake, and I could be sitting on the board far from land for a long time. I’ll sometimes ride like this, then pack it in before I do get stuck out there.

It’s not for beginners.  ;D

good info.

One area I’m still sorting the limits…..

Yes, I can ride a smaller foil. Yes, I can ride a smaller hand wing.

But at some point, without something to make continuous energy, you just can’t keep it going.

I need energy from somewhere to keep flying. A wave, or good apparent wind. I’m still sorting gear choice for these days. I really hate to go big on wings for foils anymore.

I often see people asking how much these boards add to low end. Foils and/or hand wings.

I’m unable to answer this.

I just know that when you try a wide board again, you feel the drag.

I am riding smaller foils with these boards.

I won’t build a clear board. Resin tinting helps a lot. It also makes you a better glasser by showing flaws. No paint.

Does Nelson build for any major brands, or just customs ?  Great videos.  I wish I had these resources 30 years ago.  Was just learning by mistakes.  Jay

They build for Hawaiian based brands. You’ll sometimes hear about shaper XXX using them.

I do everything the Nelson Factory way.

The only improvements over their way I’m doing…

Black plastic gives a better wet out visual than clear plastic. Also gray plastic works better too. I don’t use any clear.

My table is designed to staple the plastic sheets tight over the 4 ft wide ends. End 2x4 gets replaced once a year. It ends up with too many staples in it eventually. This is much faster in production than tape.

Roller gets replaced once a year. It gets too heavy eventually.

I don’t calculate resin weights anymore. I tried, but found it wasn’t worth my time.

When you roll the cloth onto the roller, it does a good job of leaving excess resin behind on the table.

I laminate at 78-80 degrees. In Winter, I turn the shop heater up to that amount. Everything works better at 78-80 degrees. In summer the AC is set to 78-80.

An old master windsurf builder once told me, to not think of vacuum bagging as removing excess resin.

The wet out table is where you get the resin ratio right and light weight results.

Guys who pour buckets of resin on the board and think vacuum bagging will remove all the excess resin, will never reach their potential.

So why bag? To achieve a good bond with less resin.

Every material (carbon biax, carbon warp, S, E, Innegra) takes resin different and leaves a different amount behind on the table when you roll it up for transfer. It takes feel and experience to dial in it.

It’s a good looking board. I like the dimensions.

I’ve been tempted to make one that size for myself. My 5’5 never leaves the van. Just the 6’8. I’m thinking a 5’10 might get me off the 6’8 on the best days.

I noticed one big brand switched from stringers, with box set on flange, like above, to the huge block of divinycell.

I noticed another big brand switched from the huge block of divinycell, to the stringers with box set on flange.

This flip flop from two major players says to me, they both had failures.

Yes, shaped it myself.

Todays winging test.

I’ve been screwing around with board sizes. Decided I want the smallest downwind board for winging light wind. I’m not keen on doing flat water pop ups. Too old. Am doing Foildrive instead of SUP these days.

So with that in mind, this was today’s stability test of a 6’8 x 21.5 x 110 liter with a paddle. No wind to test winging yet. Had to get in wet. Finished sanding it this morning.

It should be easy winging in super light wind. 185 lbs
