Ok,
If you haven't seen it....pretty heavy.  Props to Mark.  Dude can hold his breath, and I guess it pays sometimes!

Wouldn't have posted it here, but after watching it like 100 times, I realized that there is a standup charger in there scratchin themselves over that monster.  The vid on Surfline video confirms it later.  Not sure who that is, but props to anybody who went , paddle or not.

Sessions / Wetsuits are good

Totally warm on Cape Cod.  Wetsuits are 10x better than they were 10 years ago
We worked for it, but the couch just wasn't callin.    As per STC....no excuses

Gear Talk / I hear that cracking sound again
« on: November 20, 2014, 06:56:25 AM »
It's a very subtle noise, and i only hear it every once in a while, but i know what it is.

I have snapped 4 Kialoa paddles now....about one every two years .... 3 Methanes and a Shaka.

I love the paddles...the blade, handle, weight, and the oval shaft.....

but.....I am pretty sure that their diagonal carbon weave on the shaft is a problem

It's not a vertical group of fibers with a wrap....I am thinking that the diagonal weave unevenly loads smaller goups of fibers  which give way in a microscopic fracture pattern....

this kind of industry learning curve has been seen with windsurfing masts

Every break has been below my power arm, and every failure has been during some relatively minor dig with no evidence of a fracture line before hand.

So i heard the little ting yesterday.  And i know what it eventually means.   We have a good sales rep and i did get helped by Kialoa, but i'm probably going to try another brand after the next failure

Training, Diet, and Fitness / hydration option

I have been using the Capri sun foil packs to extend a surf session...tucks in board shorts pocket or into wetsuit.  200cc  wets the whistle  maybe gets another hour on a hot day.

Didn't know that they now make a 330 cc option....yeah maybe too much sugar, but beats a camelbak, and the foil is convenient.....the other foil stuff i have seen is too thick/heavy

Gear Talk / Motor Heads: Marine Tex
« on: October 30, 2014, 12:07:59 PM »
Ok Pono....this for you.

I have a hole in an oil pan on an island car someplace remote.

I could do the oil pan if i had the time, BUT....so the island mechanic said hey NBD, and threw MARINE TEX on it......wtf! ....then i hear racers etc, will do so

(I probably can't stand it, and will change the pan myself about 3 years from now, but it's amusing in the least)

Trust or no trust?

NorthEast / Nothin?

C'mon...I expected to hear rants and raves
This weekend was VERY good if you could mix tide, wind and direction

I had some September like bombs except for the short period, but i was not on the Cape, and was chasing it hard... First time since last fall that i spent all day in the water.

Course, no pics so it didn't happen

Gear Talk / Breaking Paddles
« on: August 02, 2011, 05:54:58 AM »
So I snapped my Methane in two.
No falls,  crushes, and I have tried to keep the UV exposure to time on the water.

2 or 3 years old.....this year i have been really pushing hard on the thing for turns etc.

Broke mid-shaft while digging hard for a wave....which i caught:).

I am feeling kind of macho about the thing really, but i guess i didn't usually think you could fatigue these things.....BUT.....I don't think the carbon % is like we see in windsurf masts.  I presume there was multiple small traumas to the paddle over time

My question is...Can you/should you just expect to snap them after a fair amount of use?

Technique / Paddle as Handplane?
« on: June 23, 2011, 04:34:52 PM »
Had a little swim in the other day.
Hate swimming with the paddle....prefer to chuck it and swim, but i caught a couple of little waves on the way in, and i thought:  Why am I not using the blade more.?

Anybody played with this?  I guess i might try bodysurfing with the paddle for kicks

Gear Talk / Christmas Help! Naish Nalu Window 11'6

Tryng to do the right thing for my wife.

That includes not getting gear that I "kind of hope to borrow sometimes"

Like a big gun for instance. ;D

Wife surfs longboard prone....kind of hesitant about SUP in waves (despite my over-coaxing to the contrary....)
That means flat water.

Anyway,  anybody have/tried the Nalu WINDOW.?????     I am worried about fals onto the plastic window frame, and that the window area would be too slippery for kids to slide around in..(could wax, but.....)

Window scratching is a given...NBD, but weight might be tough especially if window fills with h2o, and wife like not big kine...

Anyway  thanks! ya?

Technique / The Bash-Pivot-Drop
« on: August 19, 2010, 05:40:35 PM »
Is it possible?
Paddle out, pivot into the lip, and make the drop......????

I think it may be possible, but it would take:
Fast speed out
Unreal timing
A One-stroke pivot to 180 direction change.

(I am not taking about a 45 degree stroke in.....)

Ok, so i am at like two paddle strokes, but frozen due to age/lack of ability/agility.
We have no elite crowd to watch around here.....

Why don't we have a Moves Category on this forum?
Sort of like this:

The Shape Shack / Kevlar Rails
« on: July 29, 2010, 08:05:39 AM »
I'm pretty sure that i will be making my own board in the off-season (whenever that is!)
.
Pretty good with glass work.  Not a shaping artist, but i will muddle thru.

What i'm really wondering about is kevlar on the rails, or at least the paddle damage sections.  If i did a 50/40 kevlar-carbon weave on the rails first, I think i could "bury" the edges, but my prior kevlar projects always confounded by the lack of sand-ability.

Appreciate any thoughts or tricks to cleaning the fringe....I think there could be a big advantage to kevlar on the rails
Maybe bury with a 4oz sacrificial layup prior to later glass?

Not worried about flex characteristics as it's going to be fishy

Bored outta my mind with very few waves on the east coast lately.....

I grabbed my methane paddle, and an old Starboard Go at a nearby lake....
Now understand that i'm only one year into sup.....and that i started on a 281/2 wide board, in the waves.....i had never paddled in flat water before, and today i hit glass with what a 34" wide thing?.....

Next thing you know i'm doing all the stuff we used to do on windsurfers....rail rides, cross stepping to nose sinking piruettes,  fin first to backwards paddling stuff.....

I think i made more progress today than in a month of waves..
I may drop the fin entirely.
