NorthEast / The Stairs
« on: May 15, 2017, 08:13:30 AM »
Anyone holding out hope on the Marconi stairs?....better find another way

I biked in there this weekend.  Absolutely no work in progress...timber left over from the takedown storm.
There are survey flags down as if they will have to chunk into the cliff 20 yards north of the prior steps.

Cliff face looks too steep to trust.  No heavy equipment in parking lot...nothing

A parkee said they are hoping for July 4th, but has a ghost town look.

Ok totally random, but I respect the opinions rendered on this forum  (a lot of the time)

I have had a long standing lust of the Yater Spoon, mostly just from rubbing the rails....may finally pull the trigger, as I know where there's one a sleeping...$$

I understand that this is a sup forum, but would appreciate any rider feedback....the racks on the shed are full, so this buy is maybe a bit selfish, but I figure that I could milk that board for another 20 years

Gear Talk / Flex Seal
« on: November 03, 2016, 08:03:47 AM »
I am actually hearing good things about this product ("as advertised on TV"), and wondering if anybody has tried it on wetsuits...

I have piles of wetsuits in various states of decomposition
Hard to throw them away,... I give away when someone could use one, and use them on warmer days to preserve the good suits...

But... why not Flex Seal?

NorthEast / Hokulea
« on: May 30, 2016, 06:34:58 AM »
We are honored to have these serious voyagers join us in New England soon.

Although there is nothing on the website yet, the advance planners are pretty sure that the Hokulea will leave NYC June 19th, and then head to Block Island (20th).   That brings them to Martha's Vineyard on the 21/22 time frame.

Just putting this out there because I know the Block Island folks are gonna do a bit of a paddle out (if the kanu doesn't come in at midnite).

The voyagers are planning to go up LI sound...which might be an opportunity for some of you....Although I am betting if it goes SW, they  might just go offshore after a few days in NYC!

I will put this in Regional, but these folks are on THE world tour.  Much respect.

General Discussion / A Proner's Pledge
« on: November 10, 2015, 05:20:45 PM »
Bags packed for 2+ weeks to the Maui epicenter.
My Pledge :  "Not gonna SUP"

My rational....taking the whole fam...this is not a wave chase

First time the kids have been back since they were keiki

So the list is more like:

A Crater hike
Snorkeling Turtle Town...and letting Captain Greg sail us to Molokini
Sneaking into the Grand Wailea if I can find the right towels
An "Almost-Kapu" swimming hole somewhere around Hana
Boogie Boarding Paia Bay
Watching College football at 8 in the morning
Taking the kids to the salad bar at Mana Foods and showing them why they will want to have a real job some day!
Watching the new Star Wars film

And the grinds....Conveyor belt-Sushi.   Spam musubi....Huli Huli chicken, and Roselani's Haupi Fudge Pie.

I am totally stoked to have two weeks off with these tween-monsters.
There will be plenty of water time.....probably a lot of South side....and yeah I would like a little juice, but I don't want to be selfish (been there/done that), and to have to chase down a sup at a rental shop will be a statemtnt I don't want to make.

I have a 40lb brown old Ole under a deck upcounty, or will rent a Kazuma/Takayama etc, but I want to keep it simple....

So if by chance you do see me sitting at Junya's peak or Lane's....just know I got a pass from the fam and I'm happy.

(I  will snag some Thanksgiving morning while everyone is doing the  Turkey prep or watching the parade....always had good luck with that day!)

NorthEast / Official Complaint
« on: September 18, 2015, 05:46:48 AM »
Sorry, but someone's got to do it....yeah....I know it was a fun summer....some nice little bumps and all....but geez it's mid September.

My postings correlate inversely with swell height and I find myself watching too many vids lately, and posting too much.

Haven't had a hold down/cough-spit or lump-in-throat for like a year.

Yes, there's another puny depression in the right place with a 50% chance  of strengthening, and I wish no harm to anyone from any storm...but the water's warm, I banked time from work, and have earned enough matrimonial coupons for some righteous waves

Overhead for two days will get me by until I return to the Valley Isle in November.

Sorry...but someone has to say it..this is not the year........breaking out road bike

I put a string of undercarriage blue LED lights in my outdoor shower....How desperate is that?

I find the absence of posts from the Cape about the last few days a bit intriguing.   What a fun little bump from a great direction.

We haven't really had the juice this year, but some the fun factor is there

A MidSummer refresher course, and welcome to the new folks:

(This reprinted from one of the OG's:)

"Plenty of guys are getting on Standup Paddle Boards and heading out into the surf, with no idea of surf etiquette.

Please have a read, and save yourself from mouthfuls of abuse, and giving the sport a bad name:

This section is dedicated to Kook & Kool!

1. You paddle out floundering to a lineup with surfers. You can barely stay standing but proceed right into or outside of the lineup. You paddle for waves while people scramble out of your way only to fall off before you can even get on the wave.... Your big board becomes an extremely dangerous projectile... Kook alert!! KOOK!! KOOK!! KOOK!! KOOK!!

2. You can barely stay standing so you practice in an area where no one is around that you could endanger or bum out. You care about the world wide effects of SUP surfing so you paddle and surf with Aloha. Very Kool!!

3. You start to get the hang of it and want to surf better waves so you decide to surf a more popular spot. You paddle out and stand outside everyone. The sets come and you paddle in like a locomotive right thru the pack. You get waves in every set... KOOK!!

4. You start to get the hang of it and want to surf better waves so you decide to surf a more popular spot. You paddle out and check out the situation. You see waves off to the side that a lot less people go for. You catch a few of those... Since you don't want to wear out your welcome, you decide to catch only a few set waves at most. You surf with Aloha.... Kool! :)

5. You paddle out on an in-consistent day to a crowded spot. You stand outside everyone the whole duration of the lulls. You never sit down so you tower over others the whole time... You make sure you catch a wave from every set. KOOK!

6. You paddle out on an in-consistent day to a crowded spot. You feel like you're on stage so you stand off to the side or sit down between sets because you don't like blocking everyone's view of the beautiful ocean. You catch a couple waves then move to the inside or on to another spot or just paddle around because you figured out how to surf with Aloha... KOOL!! :)

7. You're pretty good and can get in and around the surf well... You surf crowded spots and catch all the waves you can. Small ones, set waves etc. Because you can surf good you get plenty waves. You're always calling people off your waves. You just can't help yourself to sit sets out so you basically take over the spot for the duration of your surf. HUGE SELFISH KOOK!!!!!!!!

8. You're pretty good and can get in and around the surf well... You go to a crowded spot and check out what's going on. You see some of the lesser quality waves going un-ridden and surf those. You catch a ton of waves but ones that no one really wants. You paddle out and get a few set waves but you make sure others get waves by quietly cluing them in to incoming sets. You become a quiet spotter of sorts for others to score good waves.... You always sit out a few sets. You use your high vantage point to stoke others out. KOOL!! (When you arrive and it's already crowded NOT GOING OUT THERE is the KOOLEST!) :)

9. You see how cool SUP surfing is because you can paddle fast and want to get back at those greedy longboarders. You decide to get into it to take over and be the dominent surfer at any spot at any time. Do the entire surfing world a favor and don't get into it. You are the biggest KOOK!!!!!!

10. You see how cool SUP surfing is because you can do something that is a challenge, get great exercise, paddle far up the coast at will, have a blast riding waves you never thought would be fun, discover new spots, like to enjoy the comraderie of the SUP surfers around the world. KOOL!! :)

Note:
If there are more than one of you SUP surfing, everything becomes doubled, tripled, quadrupled, etc.
Avoid heavy rotations with other SUP surfers when surfing with others.

Be aware of your actions and the actions of others. BE KOOL!"

Thanks to Paddle Surf Hawaii!

NorthEast / I got dropped in on
« on: July 27, 2015, 07:33:17 PM »
By a seal.
Now I don't consider them  local, they commute to Coast Guard  too.

Preface...I don't think they are cute....they will look right at you and take a crap...and they eat too much fish.
But...they are comical when they try swallow a skate.  They will stare at you, and freak out if you nod your head "Yes"
Mostly I don't care what they do.

People say don't surf with them, because they are shark food....but I say they are the lookouts, and I am only nervous when they are not in the water
Course I have a board that is "Mick Fanning Yellow"....so all bets are off

There's been a lot of playful activity with them in the last few weeks.... I think they are enjoying a few weeks rest before they become seriously hunted....they are surfing a fair bit. Surfing in groups of 10 or more

Tonite there was a background bump, with a few chest high, and Junior pulled right into my wave just 8 feet away....I was closer to the peak, and as I set for my bottom turn he and I had the staredown, and he backed out over the top....minimal mushball.....I've seen it done a hundred times with respect in the lineup...no stink eye, just a give....but I never had a seal geeve'em before.

It was weird, and fun.
I always get something from being on the water.

Gear Talk / Deck Pad vendors
« on: June 17, 2015, 06:05:27 AM »
I know things have been covered in different threads over time., but things have changed/shrunk in the marketplace.  I just got a new surf ride and want to tweak the pad with abit of a custom wrap.
Vendors like C4 don't seem to carry much...DaKine is down to one type pad. FCS one

Internet search basically comes down to only a few with some variety
Would appreciate any input....and maybe we could list here for the 2015 update

I know of:
NSI:  Good variety....but I have found some of their pads rashy-harsh at times Softer would be nice
Kings....good colors...don't know how sticky
On A Mission: Never seen up close
