I'm not sure about the rest of Southern CA, but here in San Diego we've had the best week ever for surf conditions and its suppose to continue for several more days. I think I rode more quality waves in the past 4 days than I did all summer. Nothing too big, but a lot of chest high and always a couple of over head waves every session. The wind is non-existent so it's total glass conditions. The massive high pressure over the west has fueled the fires in Ventura, LA, and Eastern San Diego, funneled the cold weather into the Midwest and East coast, and kept the snow away from Mammoth and Tahoe, but its been a blessing down here.

Just got back Monday from my annual 2 week Baja SUP trip. Surf has been so bad this summer in San Diego that this was a huge treat. We had a couple of days of shoulder high waves and the rest was waist high. Check out the crowd the next day the crowd doubled

check it out
Alaska Airlines has been busy behind the scenes looking for ways to make the travel experience as seamless as possible for our guests. And knowing that adventures are even more fun with the right gear, we’re reducing the charge for most sporting equipment starting today. Yep, that’s right – starting July 19, most sporting equipment that may exceed our normal checked baggage weight and dimensions flies for only $25. This is a big win for sports enthusiasts and sports teams who can now take their gear along as one of their two checked bags for a fee of only $25. In the past, many of these items have carried a fee of $75. (See below for a whole list of items that now travel for just $25.) Additionally, as an added benefit for our MVP Gold 75K, MVP Gold, MVP, First Class, and Club 49 guests—sporting equipment that was previously charged as oversized/overweight now counts towards their free checked baggage allowance. The same applies for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card free checked bag. Excess baggage charges may apply for items that exceed the free checked baggage allowance. Alaska Airlines is happy to accommodate our guests traveling with sports equipment. We accept sports equipment items as checked baggage, provided each piece is properly packed in a soft- or hard-sided case designed specifically for the equipment. Overweight fees will still apply if the packed sporting goods cases contain other items that make a case too heavy. The new lower fee also applies to Horizon Air and SkyWest-operated flights and will be added to Virgin America at a later date. Sporting equipment allowed on Alaska Airlines for $25 includes: Archery Bicycles Boogie boards Bowling Golf Clubs Skis/Snowboard Fishing Equipment Hockey/Lacrosse Equipment Pole Vaults Scuba Equipment Skateboards Surfboards/Paddleboards Windsurfing Equipment Share this:

I found this interesting. Seems to put me in the right area, but not sure if its accurate. Jim Terrell says to take your weight in pounds, multiply by .25 and add 45. I get 90 and currently like using my 84.

The Lawrence Welk retirement community is about 50 miles north on San Diego and very successful, especially with my parents generation, who are all dead or dying. I use to joke with some of my developer friends that we should by it and re-label it as a home for our generation, maybe the Rolling Stones retirement village. Guess I was just ahead of my time, http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/jimmy-buffett-to-open-margaritaville-retirement-communities-w470492Jimmy Buffett has announced plans to break ground on a string of retirement communities inspired by his classic "Margaritaville" and its themed chain of restaurants and resorts. For Parrotheads "55 and better" seeking an "active adult community" while wasted away again, the Latitude Margaritaville will open its first branch in Daytona Beach, Florida, with similar communities also in the works. "Inspired by the legendary music and lifestyle of singer, songwriter and best-selling author Jimmy Buffett, your new home in paradise features exciting recreation, unmatched dining and FINtastic nightlife," the Latitude Margaritaville site says. The $1 billion project, a collaboration between Margaritaville Holdings and Minto Communities, aims to create 7,000 homes in Daytona Beach; since announcing Latitude Margaritaville two weeks ago, the property has already received over 10,000 registrations, Minto senior vice president Bill Bullock told Good Morning America. “It’s going to be a very fun place,” Bullock added. “We expect our first residents to be living in the community by late summer of 2018.” The Daytona Beach branch's sales office will open in late 2017, with model homes opening in early 2018. 2018 is shaping up to a busy year for Buffett as the singer's greatest hits will serve as the inspiration for a Broadway musical titled Escape to Margaritaville. While the musical won't arrive on Broadway until spring 2018, the show will debut this May with a six-week run at La Jolla, California's La Jolla Playhouse. Following that, Escape to Margaritaville will play for audiences in New Orleans, Houston and Chicago before setting course for New York.

I just returned from a week at Nosara Paddlesurf camp and had a great time with a first rate outfit.
First the accommodations, which were very nice. They usually limit the guests to 8 people for their week long camp, but there were 9 in our group. We all stay in a newer resort that has 4 rooms with 2 queen beds in each room so the can accommodate couples or two friends. They serve outstanding meals and snacks and have a pool and a bar with a small fridge so you can store beer, wine, whatever.
Schedule, coaching, and SUP gear. They totally wore me out, but in a good way. I need to point out that the instruction is all about SUP surfing. Typical day was breakfast, 1st SUP session, relax, lunch, coaching, 2nd SUP session, dinner, relax and crash early. They had 4 instructors for us, so they divided the group by skill level and experience and gave everyone individual coaching. Our group, which is pretty average, was divided into four groups: 1) absolute SUP surf beginners ( a couple who only paddled a few times and never in the ocean), 2) Competent SUP flatwater paddlers with little ocean experience, 3) Some SUP surfing experience, and 4) Several years of surfing and SUP surfing experience. The coaches worked with us before each session, paddled out with us and commented on the waves we caught and didn't catch, and during the coaching session, talked about what we did right and what we did wrong. They filmed the AM sessions and we reviewed the videos on detail. The instructors were together on their specific method of SUP surfing, which was different from what I've been doing during the past 10 years of self taught SUPing. They had a wide variety of gear with the majority of boards were carbon Infinity round nosed Blurrs. I rode an 8'5" X 31. Nice boards but I missed my 8'10" Sunova speed. But no transport issues, I just brought carry on and still brought more than I needed.
Surf. The resort was within walking distance to the main surfing beach in Nosara, but we mostly surfed a beach they took us to which was 15 minutes away. We were always the only ones there. There is a river there, so they took the beginners on the river the first day. Each group went to a different peak that suited our skill levels. It was a beach break, which I rarely ever surf, and really try to avoid, but when in Rome... On the last two days, there was a bigger swell and we SUPed a reef point break that was shoulder to a few feet overhead and had 100, 200 yard rights. Again, never saw another surfer there.
Conclusion. Great SUP trip and I'd unequivocally recommend to anyone who want to improve their SUP surfing. It worked great for the couple that went with me, he's experienced and she's a beginner. There are few places they would both have a great SUPing experience. Everything was top level and I learned an incredible amount. Now I need to practice changing my bad habits and polishing my new ones.

Free, you fix it, it's yours. This board was damaged when I flew back from Maui to San Diego. Major buckle, will never be the same but could be a repaired. Alaskan airlines came thru and gave me a full retail reimbursement . If anyone wants to pick it up from me in San Diego, they can have it. I can give you more details if you'd like. It is a 9'X 30" and about 4" thick. Liters may be around 130 to 135, I'm 180 lbs and it floats me very well. It surfs really great and is extremly versital, from DOH to waste-high.

I'm heading to Hawaii with my wife and two SUPs. I'll be in Hanalei Oct 11 thru 17 and Maui Oct 18 to Oct 26. We've been going to Hanalei for the past few years and I have not been in Maui since 1999 when I was a die-hard windsurfer. A friend of ours bought a home in Launiupoko and we can't pass up a free stay.
