I just started recently riding backwinded for prolonged periods. This is a really fun sensation. I am trying to get to the point where I can go upwind backwinged same as normal. Any backwinders out there that can help me get upwind? I saw some sickbirds in the Gorge going upwind backwinged. Thanks. Senditbrö!!!

I ride strapped. Even foot pressure takes a bit more tuning with straps. However, once dialed, strapped riding, for me, is way more radical than unstrapped, especially with the wider wings like 999/1099. I ride everything on crazyshort and 325. Not everyone may be ready for this set up but when you are, it is way easier to crank radical turns on big wings.

Holy Crap, the 1099 is so good. I've been on the KDFoils 12" tail for the last two weeks in small glassy gutless surf. This wing surfs so so so well when there is no power in the wave. Of course, I'd rather be on a smaller foil, but when the waves are small this is the setup. The setup is just a little more twitchy and less forgiving on the pump - but still pumps perfectly fine. The surfing is just so much better and the downsides are barely a downgrade.
I alternated tails between KDFoils 12, 13.5 and 15 as well as Axis 350P tail (very similar to 13.5" KD).
The 15" with 1099 is a dog even though its a really great tail The 13.5" and 350P ride fantastic and really make the foil super fun The 12" is a game-changer
The 1099 continues to blow me away. I have been playing with a couple of things that dramatically improve the performance for winging. Crazy short/325P/82 old carbon(first time I have said that) 1. flying it just below the surface. 2. slow down The combo of both of these brings this wing to life. The 1099 is a fast wing but the roll gets seriously locked in at speed so, turning is very limited. I have been taking it down to maybe 8-12 mph and all of a sudden I can rip radical turns full 180 degrees as if I am on a small surf wing. I feel like the wing is performing at its optimal speed.

+1 on the presesh and music. The Dart is the best for powered carves down and upwind like you are talking about. The low aspect grunt in that wing gives me shiteloads of torque that can go full blast with a sheet in. I like to do the s carves and then on the downwind leg, just drag a wingtip to backwind and initiate a carving 3. Speaking of backwinding, lately I have been playing with the Starfish. This is the most ridiculous thing I have done with my wing but its sooo fun. Everyone, please try a starfish next time you are out. You will laugh your ass off all the way across the water. If you havent heard of it, it's just point straight downwind and put your wing on your back, between you and the wind. The fun starts when you practice it on the beach(during presesh). Send it!!!

nice right up VB. I have tinkered with this a bit. I am on 1099 in light wind. Here's another fun thing on big wingspan foils. Try slowing down to near stall speed and getting the foil almost to the surface. My 1099 comes to life when I do this. All of a sudden it becomes a lively carving machine. I am now moving a lot closer to the speed of the chop and can pull in and tap the energy. Once I figured out how to tap it, I no longer need the wing and can flag out and just James Casey around the lake. Bottom line is: slow down. It is a different world below 7 mph. My wide HA foils will go fast, but the roll immediately gets locked in and that makes me sad. Another thing thats fun when I get my foil close to surface is to do little tip out carves and get comfortable with breaching. When I am going that slow it is not as scary to carve a tip out as when i am hauling ass. Send it!

beautiful ramblings. Fun projects. Here's my idea for another project. I think you are the most qualified for it. Compressed air foil assist for DW or light wind winging. I'm thinking re-fillable Soda Stream bottles mounted on board or inside board. I know that we don't need much of a boost to get up, maybe just 3-4 seconds. Some kind of foot actuated switch or gas pedal. I am not sure where the jet should fire out of, mast or fuse, paddle? I think this could be a very low drag system. Would the air jet just cause ventilation? It would be very light compared to batteries and a motor. If you could have it ready by mid July that would be awesome as I will be in the neighborhood.

Sickbird! Paired with crazyshort/325p/86 carbon and 4M Dart with 20-40mph 180lbs. My goodness. This combo reminded me of kitefoiling on tiny wings. Weird thing was that it glided and pumped like a much larger wing. It is only 1014sqcm. I have been riding in this tiny lake (20acres). BTW if you haven't tried winging in a small body of water, its really fun. The waves were whipping up to thigh high somehow. I had my most successful time to date of flagging out and connecting the bumps with pumping and gliding and turning all over. I'm sure the ultrashort/375p would up my pump a bit but I wouldn't want to trade it for the amazing turning capabilities of this kit. I got some of my highest jumps ever and the landings were cushy due to the small wingspan easily going back underwater. So stoked to have a foil for high winds. Can't wait to ride this in real surf. Got a couple of windsurfer water starts too(just a high wind thing). The narrow wingspan makes waterstarting less sketch because there isn't a lot of wing sticking out of water hitting my sail. Coming from mostly ART wings as of late, this one is refreshingly stable. I have found that certain bodies of water with mixed up current and refraction are challenging on the ART's. The HPS 830 doesn't flex and do weird chit in the most turbulent water.
Takeaway- if you are looking for a hard charging, high jumping, ridiculously turny, and still somehow amazing gliding wing- HPS 830. Send it!!!!

I tried shimming the back of the stab up(increasing lift) with the Axis shim that came with my 980. I was on the 1099/375p/CS/86 carbon and it did exactly what I expected. Stall speed seemed slightly higher which allowed me to slow down to the speed of the chop. It also lifted off sooner than without. The problem is that I have become such a "Drag Whore" that none of the benefits outweighed the problem of added drag.

I just got a 325P tail. I have had it with the 1099 on a Crazyshort with 86 carbon mast. My 1099 now turns like the 999. I have not had any pitch issues. Its just all better. I was on a 375P which I guess I will still use, don't know when or why. Maybe super light wind? Maybe I'll sell it and get a 300P.
I wanted to let all the 1099 owners out there that the 1099 is amazing in strong wind. Don't just use it for light wind. The glide becomes even more ridiculous when you have 20-30mph at your back. I have been able to flag out and just glide wherever I want to. It is a good reminder that my body is a wing that captures air and creates forward(downwind) drive. I didn't pay much attention to this until the 1099 happened. I feel like I need some sort of wingsuit to go with it. I predict that we will see some type of suit designed to catch air and glide soon. The glide is so efficient now, new doors are opening. I know Kai tried it with the carrot thing. I can tell a big difference between my baggy drysuit and a tight wetsuit. There is something here....

380 speed tail pairs nicely with HPS or ART wings. Or really any wing that you want to go faster. This is the fastest thinnest tail I have used. Usual scratches included. Located in Reno, NV. Free shipping to lower 48. $175 Thanks!

Robert those wings look great! I love the taughtness of the canopy and the narrow profile. Your ultra magical wing spot looks to have a few more takers than a couple years ago. I don't think I have seen conditions better than what you have for flagged out wave foiling. Thanks for posting. We miss your interviews. Did Gwen and Damo take the torch?

winging on a sup is someone passing you a skinny joint at a party for the first time. It's a gateway. Nobody in the history of mainstream winging(3.5 yrs) has ever just stopped there. If they did stop there then they are not a good human and don't know the difference in right and wrong. Absolutely, start there. You will be entertained for an hour. Absolutely buy a used Slingshot Hoverglide 84 for $350 and any foilboard 130L ish or more for $400. Life is short. Don't die before you learn to wingFOIL.
