I am glad to see this thread back on the recent list! How's everyone feeling about they're 999's a year later? I mostly ride the 1099 on lake swell but the 999 saved me the other day in big surf in Santa Cruz on the wing. I'm trying to love my newly acquired 899 but she's a little fussy at times. I have really been enjoying winging HA foils on my custom 7'6" 80L kalama dw board. It makes takeoffs so effortless. Its like 50% less physical effort to get on foil. It weighs 10lbs, so way lighter than my 5' 80L Moon Buddy. Slices through the air effortlessly. I am stoked for the new ART that is rumored to be coming.

Foil SUP / Re: Balancing on Barricuda Style Boards

I think that having the paddle blade in the water and bracing with it helps with micro adjustments. Its all a flash back to the weird skills I developed when paddling sinker boards and race boards years ago. Try this: get up to standing and then just stand without the board moving and feel how the board reacts to your inputs. Sink the nose and recover. Now same with tail. This helps work out foot placement and you get the feel of the secondary stability of the foil. Its easier to balance when moving but you will learn more when its not moving and maybe even sinking a bit. See the foil under your center of gravity.

add in a long skinny board and you are up in 6-8mph. And yes, different kinda fun. Great potential for semi glassy wave whip ins with afternoon piss wind.

Using a 6M Vayu Aura and 58l 4'8" wing board with the AXIS 1300. I could start on the first pump in 12MPH of wind. It was an amazing light wind setup. You can go less than 8 MPH and stay on foil it felt like. Fun in a different kind of way.

It was hard to push fast. It doesn't like to go to fast, but it can be pushed if you need to.

This is awesome! Thanks sf.

That's a healthy looking wind map. S-turns and the whole upper westside are fun in Kona wind. You probably know that though. Sendit

General Discussion / Re: Should this site be renamed the foil zone?
« on: November 26, 2022, 08:19:46 AM »
I understand a non-foiler being frustrated here. I think that Seabreeze handled it differently by making foiling a separate forum page. But I like seeing the sup stuff mixed in with all the winging and foiling talk. The way I do this site is I have a bookmark on the foiling section but always just scroll right down to "recent posts" to see who is saying what. My guess is that's what most are doing. Its the fresh, relevant threads. I hardly ever go into specific sections. I credit(blame) Admin with turning me on to Axis. And here I am $7K later.... and frothing hard as ever! I still sup when I go to the ocean, but I foil there too. Still "standing up" and always in the Zone! Thanks Admin and all the frothy bretheren that click here 3 times/day for years.

probably less expensive to build one. There are a bunch of new downwind boards hitting the market lately. I imagine that if you wait 6 months, there will be a glut of second hand ones on craigslist. Mine is 7'6"x 20"x 4 3/4" 105L. It has breathed new excitement into shitty winter wind winging. I have also been trying to paddle it up in flatwater, which has been really fun and I almost have it on foil. If its just going to be for winging, it could probably be a little shorter like 6'5". The skinnier the better(to a point). The big span of the 1300 gives it ample lateral stability. If you go too wide like 26" you will probably lose some benefit of the fast hull.  It really doesn't feel like a long board when on foil because a lot of it is the skinny tail behind me. The 1300 feels like a good pairing. I am going to try using a small hand wing next time even if its light wind just to see what I can get away with.  It has been so fun having a new class of toy to play with.

I have been winging on the 1300 and 375p in 5-6mph with a kalama 7'6" displacement hull board. If you really want to unlock the lightest of wind, the long skinny, light board is the key. I way able to butt start it too!

I am super sad I missed this HM mast! What a deal!
If you sell another one like, I don't know say an 86, I would be stoked to buy it.
Thanks

Nice work Jondrums! I have a sillyshort arriving today. I feel better somehow, when I can change something up for $275 instead of $700+. I like that you did it for nothing. I just hope you don't start missing your crazyshort.

I have kicked this idea around quite a bit. One thought which I havent done is the rocket box(on roof) drying rack. Set some type of rack inside to lay suit over. Here's the committing part. Drill vent holes in the front and rear  and a drainhole in bottom of box. Drive around while wetsuit cooks dry. Or just park and it will still cook. I usually just hang my suit on a hanger in back of my transit medium roof with a plastic bucket under.
