1st session on 1201 today. KD Marlin tail 1deg shim, HM 900, sillyshort advance, 80 liter moonbuddy 5.0 strapless.

Me: 180lbs.

Wind was a little "whore's panties" 5-15mph but had a lot of time on foil gliding in nearly nothing on SS V3 4M

Turning: right between the 1300 and 1099. Closer to the 1099. This wing turns plenty good to be fun winging. Like all foils, if I kept it high in the column it turned a lot better. It felt like I could skid it into turns with my hips. I think footstraps will help turn this beast.

Glide: retarded. Comparable to 1300

Pump: really easy to flag and pump n glide as far as I wanted. Easy to dig out of holes and get back up high on mast. Cadence was similar to 1300(slower pumps than 1099)

Speed: It was fun to be able to go down sub 1099 to a walking pace to slash some lake chop. It also goes really fast when pushed. It didn't seem as locked in at speed as the other ART's.

Stiffness: Stiffer than the 1099 in crossed up lake chop. I was worried about this and am relieved that its all good.

Pitch: It seemed a bit more pitchy than 1099 but I feel like I am just getting used to it. I am keen to try my crazyshort regular fuse and see.

I am stoked on this wing! I think it will replace my beloved 1099 and maybe the 1300 too. I will try it on a flatwater paddle up tomorrow and see if I still need the 1300. I am super into riding backwinded for long reaches and this wing was easiest I've done that with.

Ha! Not a pollution but a nice plug. I have only 8 or so sessions on the 899. I agree, it is a great wing. Conditions at my local are lighter winds than what I like the 899 for. If I lived at the ocean and was riding waves in higher wind, I would need to keep it. I am mostly a 1099/silly short/325P guy. I am culling the ART herd(except for my beloved 1099) to generate funds for something shiny and new. I might be interested in the ART Pro if it ever gets released or the new surf wing. I have been eying the Uni Progression as well. I am less intrigued by going fast on the ding lately and more into slowing down and connecting the bumps. Someone will buy this and love it I have no doubt. It would already be sold if the axis facebook thread still allowed selling.

I got the 18”. I wouldn’t really want to deal with much more as its a little awkward holding it while winging. I just tucked all the straps into the cone and folded it and then wrapped my hand around the cone and grabbed my boom(Javelin). It occurred to me that with a little r&d i could just be done with the wrist leash all together. I need to figure out how to stow it so when I drop the wing on accident, it will deploy gracefully. I might try tucking it into my impact vest. I’m convinced that I can paddle the board downwind faster than it drags in the event of the wing going ahead of me. I could see this working on a board as well. If you’re a competent winger and looking to spice up your session, this is it. The freedom of being on foil with nothing in hand is really fun.

So I was inspired by a chat over on the progression project forum about tying a drift anchor to the wing and ditching it. I tried it a bunch of times today and it went just as planned. The anchor was $18 on amazon:

I just hooked the anchor to my wristleash and just threw it and it works amazing! The cone catches the water and slows the wing down to like a 1-2 mph drift.  Some may wander what the point of this is. I use the wing to get on foil in some fun lake chop and then throw the wing away and I am just purely foiling with nothing in my hands. This is perfect training for downwind foiling and connecting bumps. This is also incredibly fun as a new diversion of foiling. My brain is spinning from thinking of how to apply this. Wake thieving, dw practice, tow in surfing, wing sharing. Thoughts?

The Shape Shack / Re: Infinity Tails

these are super cool Admin! Is it possible that an infinity tail could be narrower wingspan than a regular and still provide plenty of lift because of the double wing? I really like the safety aspect(pun). It's really cool all the foils and parts that you have been printing up all winter. You are a pioneer. How hard would it be to print a box front wing?

I am glad to see this thread back on the recent list! How's everyone feeling about they're 999's a year later? I mostly ride the 1099 on lake swell but the 999 saved me the other day in big surf in Santa Cruz on the wing. I'm trying to love my newly acquired 899 but she's a little fussy at times. I have really been enjoying winging HA foils on my custom 7'6" 80L kalama dw board. It makes takeoffs so effortless. Its like 50% less physical effort to get on foil. It weighs 10lbs, so way lighter than my 5' 80L Moon Buddy. Slices through the air effortlessly. I am stoked for the new ART that is rumored to be coming.

Foil SUP / Re: Balancing on Barricuda Style Boards

I think that having the paddle blade in the water and bracing with it helps with micro adjustments. Its all a flash back to the weird skills I developed when paddling sinker boards and race boards years ago. Try this: get up to standing and then just stand without the board moving and feel how the board reacts to your inputs. Sink the nose and recover. Now same with tail. This helps work out foot placement and you get the feel of the secondary stability of the foil. Its easier to balance when moving but you will learn more when its not moving and maybe even sinking a bit. See the foil under your center of gravity.

add in a long skinny board and you are up in 6-8mph. And yes, different kinda fun. Great potential for semi glassy wave whip ins with afternoon piss wind.

Using a 6M Vayu Aura and 58l 4'8" wing board with the AXIS 1300. I could start on the first pump in 12MPH of wind. It was an amazing light wind setup. You can go less than 8 MPH and stay on foil it felt like. Fun in a different kind of way.

It was hard to push fast. It doesn't like to go to fast, but it can be pushed if you need to.

This is awesome! Thanks sf.
