he has a GREAT SUP rental program with alot of boards  as well as many SUP boards for sale.  Don't settle for a soft top you will outgrow it....I bet he'd give you a decent price and besides, the waves are better down here than Portland...get a board, contact me and me and a few friends will take you out to some fun breaks and maybe even some outer reef breaks if the waves cooperate

also have a pint at Brain Boru pub    in Portland..

I saw a 30 min documentary on this wave on the Fuel Network  really cool wave.

In the film it wasn't just 1 wave  but a series of waves so if you missed the first, you could catch the next ones...they had waverunners so they could maneuver pretty well around the incoming waves.

Jamie I am currently riding an 11' 2" starboard so I am walking the board quite a bit too... I even have gotten a few helicopter 360s started while on the nose but havent completely made one yet but close.

I always surf short boards so the SUP and the longboard thing are both new for me

Thanks Pono  good information there   I have really only SUPed in surf so wasn't familiar with the downwinders...that would be such a luxury to paddle with the wind knowing you had a ride back at the end and didn't have to fight it coming back

Thanks DW  I kind of knew going with the wind was a downwinder, but nobody ever mentions coming back upwind so I figured they had a pick up once they reached the destination.  Maybe the upwnd part of it isn't  worth writing about..

It sounds like there are shapes made specifically for downwinders

Don't want to sound like an idiot but could somebody please explain a downwinder both the shape and the word?

Am I to believe you paddle these boards down wind only?  Is there a car waiting for you to take you back?    Are they too narrow or difficult to raddle back up wind?

Technique / Switch stance?

I am wondering how many of you out there ride switch stance (no backside riding)?

I am a natural goofy footer, but was having a little confusion with the paddle on my backside, so I decided to try surfing frontside and it's working out great and the paddle in the face of the wave.   Feels much more natural on a SUP than a surfboard

hold on and enter the water with the paddle handle first  the paddle enters the water with surprisingly little resistance...

good work!  Maybe you can be  canteloupe man....stayin in the melon family.

It's great doing something you love and still getting a great workout i.e. SUP   I would hate to have to take up running or some other sport I dread just to keep in shape

go demo a board on South Beach  I know they have rentals there (maybe around 2nd 3rd street)  Also Ovidio from Windsurfing Miami on Rickenbacker Causeway rents them.  Try before you buy...
