Hey Zoners  friends of ours work for Marriott and we are getting a free week at this resort at the end of September.  I know/remember  little about Oahu since I was last there in the mid 80s and am unfamiliar with this side of the island.  Also be in Maui for 4 days and Pono Bill has given me some great info and ideas

If you know this property are there any breaks nearby to SUP  what would the surf be like at that time of year end of September early October?  I am not bringing a board so plan to rent one....not really a "SUP " trip per se as I will have to kiss up to the friends who got us the place so I have to be on best behavior but I plan to sneak away for a few sessions hiopefully...

any information, recommendation welcome  thanks alot

Travel, Trips, Destinations / used boards equals free vacation
« on: June 05, 2010, 07:48:14 AM »
A friend of mine forwarded me an e-mail from the Costa Azul Resort in Mexico which is offering free nights in exchange for used boards.  SUPs get 2 nights at this all inclusive low key adventure resort.  Their goal is to have the best surf and sup rental gear in Mexico .  The website is below but doesn't mention this offer.  I tried t post the e-mail but couldn't seem to get it to cut and paste  I would say contact the rsort for details..sounds like a great way of paying for a vacation

Gear Talk / Starboard Hero review
« on: May 12, 2010, 08:49:47 PM »
Had the opportunity to take out the Starboard Hero 9' x 33" in some sloppy windy surf in Delray Beach and here are my findings.

I am 6 ft and 185 and have been surfing mostly Coreban Performer(9'6" x 30")
40 years surfer and 15 yrs windsurfer

I had never so much as touched the Hero before I set it in the ocean and paddled out in 20 mph winds and windswept 3 ft surf.  The board is AMAZINGLY stable and I made it out through the chop and numerous sets with no problem.  It sliced through the whitewater with ease.  I kept expecting greater impact with each set but that wasn't the case.

While waiting for the sets the board floated me beautifully and I had no problem waiting in the choppy and windy conditions.    Every time I looked down I kept thinking how short this board looked. My feet never moved and stayed glued to the mid point of the board.  This Hero was Blue Star Touch model and it does offer good traction though not as much as a deck pad, but it saves a couple lbs in weight.

The Hero paddles nicely with more Yawl than longer boards but that was expected. I was actually impressed how well it did paddle in a straight line before having to switch sides.

I stayed pretty close to the break zone and caught waves with ease.  The board catches waves nicely and has a decent rocker and drops were no problem.
Where I did miss my Coreban Performer was on the wave.  The Hero feels every bit of it;s 33" wide and it felt a little sluggish forcing me to paddle alot to stay ahead of each section.  I am able to pump my Performer more with my legs and not be as dependent on the paddle as I was with the Hero.  Of course it was only my 1st day and I am going to experiment with fin set up.  Of course the sloppy conditions were not ideal either.  It did turn well and was loose on the wave, it just seemed to lack speed.

I am looking forward to another session on the Hero and also try the Converse which at 9x 30" my suit me better.

I can say that the stability of the Hero was impressive and believe it is a board a lighter beginner could start with  and progress with.

If I can find my camera I will download some pics of the Hero

Sessions / Delray Beach session
« on: April 28, 2010, 08:50:54 PM »
Caught a fun late afternoon session in Delray today.  Waist high  some bigger sets and pretty clean.  The day before it was a lake out there and I paddled about 7 miles of glass so today was a nice surprise.  Mellow crowd about 3 other SUPers all having fun

This was only my 2nd session here since we returned from Maine..nice to trunk it and no booties, but I still miss the quality waves in New England and cant wait to get back for the summer

Gear Talk / H20 audio
« on: March 09, 2010, 11:05:54 AM »
Just want to recommend any product from H20 audio.  I did alot of long distance, boring, lonely paddling the last few weeks and my H20 audio waterproof case for my iPod shuffle was a lifesaver.  The music kept me energized and you can still hear any approaching motorcraft etc so no safety worries there.   Took a few spills in big surf and the case didn't leak.  The music actually sounded better underwater

The design is simple yet so clever and they have cases for most iPods  I used my little Shuffle so in case it got ruined it wasn't the most expensive loss.  I will upgrade my earphones though as the basic ones are a little tinny

I can't recommend these enough  www.H20audio.com

Gear Talk / 2 piece paddle recommendation?
« on: January 25, 2010, 06:24:12 PM »
just wondering if anyone can recommend a 2 piece paddle that I might be able to carry on a  plane?  I am not even sure if a 2 piece will work, maybe I need a 3 piece

I would check it but 3 planes and a boat to my house and chances are it would get damaged on the way

thanks in advance for any recommendations

Random / Haiti earthquake
« on: January 13, 2010, 06:07:52 PM »
As you all know by now there has been a devastating earthquake in Haiti.  I do business in Port au Prince and I can tell you this country was in Dire Staits BEFORE
the earthquake, and now more than ever they need our help.  First a succession of hurricanes and now this....Many have little to begin with and these poor people don't deserve this

If you see an opportunity, do what you can donate what you can and help your Caribbean neighbors in this difficult time

thanks

Random / Snowboarding tips?
« on: January 05, 2010, 11:58:48 AM »
Hey heading out to try snowboarding for the first time tomorrow....any pointers , suggestions , warnings?

I hear padded pants might be good the 1st day as I am told you land on your butt alot.   Never skied either so it's all  new to me

We do have lessons scheduled and will be wearing helmets, so hopefully my years of surfing, windsurfing and now SUP will come in handy and maybe I will only fall 100 times

SUP General / Wii game system
« on: December 19, 2009, 09:18:47 PM »
If any of you need last minute gift ideas  may I suggest the Wii gaming system with balance board

It isnt just for kids there are many games for adults many of which might help with your SUP.  The Yoga and fitness games are amazing and they focus alot on improving balance which is perfect for us.  They even have one game which includes  stand up paddling in it. (cardio workout)

I did the Yoga today for  1 hr and it KICKED my butt   tons of fun though and perfect when it is freezing outside.  This is a serious interactive workout machine and I HIGHLY recommend it

Merry Christmas
