He's pretty lucky that he made it back. Can't imagine being out in those conditions with no harness and sore shoulders.

My brother is in Chicago right now (as of last night anyway) He is on a Starboard 12-6 and has his superfreak 8.0 with him.
http://www.ponohouse.com/ponoblog/?p=263 I think he has his email posted on the site. You may be able to see his setup if you can hook up with him. I wish I could have gotten a picture of him coming out of the four seasons with his board.

Shape....you may have seen my bro out there... http://www.ponohouse.com/ponoblog/?p=263

Old guy (60+) white hair, paddling and sailing new Starboard 12-6 SUP.

Did you see the storm he mentions?

Hi Ivan,

The trailer looks good but I agree with linters observation about sizzle. How about some insight on the contents beyond the trailer. I'm a definite potential buyer but would like to know more.

Hi Linter,

Bill's my bro, but you're close. I'm Bob.

I haven't started yet. I'm going to check out Bill's Starboard Labor Day weekend. If I even think it's possible I'm going to go for it. From what Bill says the Starboard is stable enough that if anything is going to work it will. I'll be doing mostly local stuff at 1st (Plymouth Beach/Bay and some lakes) if it does. Once I get my sea legs back I'll be looking for some waves soon enough. I miss the days of sunup to sundown on the water.

It sounds to me like you're doing great. I know all too well what you're up against but all you can do is keep pushing. The alternative sucks worse.

Who's doing what and where? I'm looking for spots to stay out of the way of others while I learn. Looking for others of a like mind to hook up for some cruising and downwind rides.

I think my bro is going to like the flex in the wooden paddle I built for him. It has a decent spring to it but I also built in a reverse camber (about a 1" deflection) to the shaft so it shouldn't flex too far.

Gear Talk / Re: Paddle Blade size
« on: August 22, 2007, 08:52:51 PM »
I'm really interested in this thread. I've just started building paddles but I'm hooked. I want to start experimenting with wooden blade shapes and sizes. I've got a slightly unusual blade on the second paddle I made. I hope it doesn't suck.

http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=172.0

Should be interesting to see how blade design evolves over the next few years Anybody have thoughts on the ottertails? Or other blade configurations?

I'm probably going to start building custom paddles and I'll be looking for feedback on design. So I'll be bugging you all for input.

Not to hard to make your own. These are the 1st two I've built. If you don't have the time though all of these look beautiful. You gotta go with the soul of the wood.

I blogged the construction here.

I'll be posting the finished photos soon.

If you're a 60+ year old guy, 6'2", 250, that likes to go fast and play in the water and relatively new to SUP this review of 4 boards may apply. ;D My older bro...pretty good for an old geezer.

Here are some pictures of #2

The back of the blade pre-finish

and the front with one coat of epoxy on it.

Should be interesting to see how the edge banding rolled and pocketed as it is effects the blade dynamics.....could be cool or just suck...we'll see.

Great stuff.....a very similar conversation on my brothers blog. http://www.ponohouse.com/ponoblog/?p=158 Great for everyone to share the stoke and help others avoid buying a ride that doesn't fit. I don't see any way of avoiding trying out before you buy though. Too many variables involved. Same thing with paddles.
My brother did a comparison of 3 boards (Laird, Ku Nalu, and a JL 11) and while it helps to narrow things down for folks of similar size and skill it will be different for others. I think he sleeps with the JL now.
