I'm out of my league when you start talking about dynamically generated location lists.

It would probably be easiest to implement as a searchable index by continent/location. A link to the google maps location would be something anyone could generate with ease. I looked at the google earth community but it gets too involved I think.

This is the code to embed from google maps into a website. Not sure how it could be made to work in the comments.

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src=" "></iframe><br /><small><a href=" " style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

I don't know of any that are embeding the google earth directly. It's probably not setup for that now that I think about it. You might need to share the files on a sharing site and embed the link to the kmz file.

I know you can embed google map. http://web.mac.com/capecodsurfchallenge/ccsc/DIRECTIONS.html

I was wondering when I'd hear of the 1st occurence of this. Seems like a grey area.

SUP General / East Coast SUP Spots
« on: October 27, 2007, 01:16:05 AM »
I'm looking for some company. I'm thinking of hitting the break outside Chatham harbor sometime in the next few weekends if the conditions are good. Looks like a mile paddle from the parking lot at the lighthouse. I was watching some nice waist high rollers come in there last weekend. Looks like some long rides and the waves break...go to whitewater and then reform in spots.

I'm looking for other similar spots as well. The whole national seashore looks pretty good but the beach break is pretty short. Another longer break looks to be about 2 miles north if the Nauset beach parking lot

I'm not sure if this is something you would want to implement or not Randy but what do you think about sharing SUP spots in Google earth. I was looking at a spot on Cape Cod that is not very accessible to regular surfing but is very reachable by SUP. Here is the image but it would be great to be able to embed the kmz file.

I got interested in SUP as therapy for some balance issues. My brother gave me his 12'6 starboard as a gift and now all I can think of is paddling. When I started 3 months ago I was having trouble driving a car because of vertigo. I rarely have problems now. I've also dropped 20 pounds of fat and put on 10 lbs of muscle. It's changed my life.

I'm new to surfing so I've had limited success on the waves but I've done lots of downwind runs, rivers, and fishing. Last weekend I was in the waves at Nauset beach on Cape Cod. I felt sorry for the surfers. I'm sure they were having fun but while they were sitting around waiting for sets I was having fun paddling. I went out a couple hundred yards to check out some splashes in the water and ended up having a bunch of seals checking me out. They were as curious about me as I was of them. The surfers never even knew they were there.

I think once SUP catches on on the east coast it's going to explode. It's perfect for the conditions and so versatile and if a 50 year old fat guy with balance problems can learn to do it anybody can.

I'm thinking of wrapping the middle 3rd of the shaft of the next paddle I make with jute and then epoxying it into place. Should look good with the wood and make for a good non-slip grip. You could do something similar with black nylon string on the carbon handle.

Sounds good to me. Today was my last day without a wetsuit though I think. I was getting some strange looks from both the surfers and the seals at nauset beach today. Paddling makes all the difference. I'd come in for a break every 1/2 hour or so and be hot sitting on the beach.

It will be awhile before I'm ready for any long paddles. I'm a newb with balance problems so I spend a lot of time in the water instead of on it....:)

Technique / Re: Wave riding how do you catch the wave?

I know this technique doesn't work.

But it takes skill to bury the nose and peel off the back in one move.

Gear Talk / Re: blade size, does it matter?
« on: October 20, 2007, 04:17:56 PM »
It's tough to figure with all the variables. Size, strength, skill, board size, float, paddle shaft length. I figured the best way is to experiment. The adjustable paddle lets me do that. Next step is to make a bunch of different size paddle faces to try. I only have one at the moment. But I'm going to make 5 that I can try. I'm going to have them from 22" x 10" with a short taper to 18" x 9" with a long taper. Of course as I get better at this (I WILL get better) it will all change again.

I know there is a huge difference in how fast I can move the board dependant on paddle size. I made my 1st two paddles very different from each other. The larger one really moves the board. It's 20" x 9.5" I made it way too heavy for everyday use though...back to the drawing board. I'm actually going to be auctioning it off as an "art paddle" for charity, Save the Children, once I add some artwork.

My brother got the longer one with the smaller blade as a gift so I never compared them side by side.

I've also made an adjustable prototype, length can be changed as well as the blade. I have my length dialed in, now I need to change the blade size to see what works best. The blade I have on there now is 17" x 9" with a long taper but it feels too small. Great for cruising though. I'm thinking 21" x 9" but with a medium taper. I also want a very rounded bottom. I put a ding in the top surface of my board with a short radius on the edge of the big one. Once I figure the blade size out I'm going to build myself a nice one. The adjustable one is butt ugly. Think pool skimmer, shovel handle, plywood and epoxy. Effective but a sharp contrast to my board.

I think so much is dependant on size and strength as well. I'm 6'4",  250 so I need a bigger blade. My wife is 5'4", 130 so she needs a lot less blade. She likes the adjustable blade as is. I think eventually we will end up with two paddles each. Longer shaft and smaller blades for cruising. Slightly shorter shaft and more blade for surfing. Maybe even a third for combination days.

Hello EC,

I saw on the other post that you are in Mass. I don't know of any events but it would be great to try and get a bunch of east coasters together for a paddle. Maybe create an event....? I'm down around Plymouth. So far I haven't seen a single other SUP. Of course I'm staying away from the usual surf areas while I learn but I'm still hoping to see someone out there. I've stuck to Plymouth and Falmouth so far. Heading down to Nauset Saturday for the competition (just to watch) and hopefully a few waves.
