Good info and I saw your mods to the Malama paddle. Looks great and sounds like it works too.
I'm going to try incorporating two slots on either side of the dihedral (think intake scoops on a car) and ridges along the sides. We'll see how it works.

Great looking progress on the board Andy. I keep thinking I wan't to do this but I'll have to get a few things off the honey-do list before I can start. How big do you cut the strips?

I did steam bent laminations on the edge of the blade on my last ones. I'll do the same to the next and edge them with 6 oz cloth. I also laminate my shafts so I don't plan on glassing them. The cold bent lamination of the shaft adds a lot of strength. We'll see, the last ones were way too beefy and I plan on focusing on weight this time. These got 3 coats of epoxy and then one of a good marine varnish for UV protection. http://www.ponohouse.com/ponoblog/?p=265

Nicely done. I've started favoriting a bunch of SUP videos to watch while I work out on days I can't get in the water.

I think if you're planning a fishing trip you wont need to worry too much about performance. I'm planning on the milkcrate for next season but I plan to use a ratchet strap. Flat profile and it should hug the board pretty tight. I've also been thinking about drilling and epoxying hardpoints but have been too chicken.
The boardfisher looks pretty cool. I was thinking something along those lines for mounting outriggers for a more stable fishing platform.

What kind of wood paddle do you have? Some that I've seen are flat. Malama's have a nice dihedral. The dovetail and the dihedral both combat blade flutter by directing flow. A flat blade will flutter when pushed hard. I like the look of the dovetail and will probably try it in the future too. I'm interested in doing something different than what I've already seen. The combination of the dihedral with pockets is definitely different. At least in paddles so far as I know. It may be a completely stupid idea. If it doesn't work as planned I can always reshape...

Great vid! Perfect illustration of why SUP is so much fun regardless of the conditions.
....in the words of Billy Idol...more, more, more.

I'm cutting wood this weekend. Enough for two. One for me that doesn't weigh 12 pounds and one for Bill to actually use. The 1st two were way too heavy. I've used the one on the left but it's destined for someones wall in a charity auction. Bill has the one on the right. It was lighter but not enough. Here's the sketch of the next design. I'm thinking of trying a slight double bend in one of them. The shaft will form a slight dihedral in the blade and I'll be forming two pockets to capture and guide the flow. I'm trying for a very organic look. I'm going to try to get a good flex in the shaft. My shoulders have been killing me. The nice thing is that if it doesn't flex enough I'll just take of wood until it does. Hope I don't test to destruction.....

Interesting stuff. I just bought the wood for my second try at paddle making. Ist ones came out pretty but too much beef. Numbers 3 and 4 will be one double bend and one regular with a focus on lightness.
How do you like the double bend for surf?

Funny man Bill....I have a hard enough time remembering the things I've known for years. I don't think anything new will stick.

Hehe...speaking of deja vu all over again. I didn't even see Bill's previous post. When did you join the forum Bill?

I'm posting this on a number of forums, sorry for the deja vu all over again. Brother Bill is looking for volunteers for a festival of board and equipment testing on Maui February 15th-18th. Check with Bill for how firm that date is...this is evolving quickly and he just started posting the details at the Ponohouse. Sound's like he should have the latest boards from a bunch of the major players. If you plan on being around and this sounds like your kind of fun check out the details and give him a yell. http://www.ponohouse.com/ponoblog/?p=285

Gotta get me some of that. I took a nasty face plant onto the front of my board just weighting the nose yesterday. Actually dented it slightly with my face...... . (no smileys with black eye) My starboard has nothing forward of the central balance point. Can that stuff be cut into strips?
