SUP General / SUP or Ski?
« on: December 14, 2007, 05:54:24 AM »

Used to be I'd be headed for the mountains. Now I want to see the beach in the snow. I bet I'll get a few odd looks today.

Wow...just watched the UK Standup sunset for the 1st time. Very nice....must have been tough to have that day come to an end. Makes you wish you could bottle it.

Bill is going to be doing a big board test in late February if you want to wait that long.

http://www.ponohouse.com/ponoblog/2007/11/17/board-test-participants-so-far/

He's still looking for some volunteers to help out by the way.

I'll be getting my wife a board next summer. She took out my Starboard 12'-6" x 30" and if anything I think it was too stable for her. She's a good skiier both water and snow but has never surfed. She was absolutely rock solid on the board. She didn't even get wet. It was a bit much for her to turn though. I'm thinking something 10'-6" x 30" for her. She's 5'4, 130.

;D  You got my vote DJ

Watching that Ivan vid makes me think I'm taking too long a stroke while paddling. He's using much shorter, choppy strokes than I take.

I love cammar's vids. Not sure about this music choice though.... ;D.

It's amazing how easy Laird makes the helicopter look. No fighting for balance...he hardly moves his feet but the boards just spins around. You could almost miss it he does it so smooth.

Great idea...lots to choose from...Cammar's thousand peaks vid (and others) are workout vids for me when I'm on the treadmill. Reminds me of why I'm running in place in my living room... ;D Cammar usually has a good eclectic music mix as well.

I'm still playing with blade shapes. The dovetail is supposed to be like the dihedral in that it helps prevent flutter. This one definitely didn't flutter. But the shaft is probably too heavy for that anyway. It does look cool.

The float idea was something particular to me. I have a balance problem that can be bad on some days. I was thinking a blade with a lot of volume might help as something to lean on for those days. Not! The pictures don't show it but the blade is about 1-1/4" thick at the center and 3/4" at the edges. Made for a very clumsy feel. It also felt very short after using my #4 paddle. I'll keep this outline but probably cut the dovetail deeper. The current face shape is like a wooden soup spoon with a channel down the middle. When reshaped it will have a typical dihedral that blends into the channel and the dovetail.

EC ...give my cell phone a call and we can discuss what works. I was going to deliver, only fair..... You're going above and beyond on the reserve and shipping. Either way we need to get together on the water too. BTW, I was going to ask if you minded being recognized for the winning bid. I wanted to announce it on the forums et al. I guess since we are discussing it you don't mind  ???  but let me know

Uugh....what a dog. It paddled horribly. I'm going to completely reshape it. The whole float idea was a complete bust. The other one I just finished was awesome though.... ;D. I'll get some pictures posted soon.

Hehe...you must be the friend he mentioned hoping to hook up with. He seems like an interesting guy. Nice setup he has on Nantucket living the island life.

He had a great pictuer of his new daughter up on the website for awhile....very cute kid. What a life she's gonna have.... ;D Be ripping it up by age 6.

That's weird. When I peel off the mastic it comes off clean. Doesn't want to come off but when it does it all comes off. Are you using the 3M stuff?

Hey EC,

I left you a message with my cell #. Give me a yell and we can figure out the particulars for the paddle.

Christian is actually on Nantucket. I almost bought a wetsuit from him. He was in the middle of having a new baby so it never happened though.

This is his website.

Michael if you're interested we could time the long weekend while your here.... ;D

I think we need to plan a summer SUP event for the east coast. How about a long weekend of beach camping and SUP at the Chatham bars? Even if there is no surf we would still have fishing and crusing and maybe we'll get lucky and the tropics will be popping.

Looks like it would work but I think the mastic tape is the answer. Cheap and easy to replace. 3 months with one application so far. I'm going to start building my paddles with a recessed edge to accept two layers of mastic.

Anybody can reshape their blade if they think they can feel it. Just use a sanding block to take a 1/4" wide strip down on both sides of the edge of the blade. Re-epoxy if necessary and two layers of mastic. Two layers is about 1/64".

If you're careful putting it on it looks good too.

Doh!....I wish I had thought of that. I posted it all over the web but didn't even think to email surf shops. I thought about where it might end up but didn't get the word out specifically. Should have done a little more footwork.

Oh well...that's OK. Someone is getting a good deal. It would have been nicer to send a little more $ off to Save the Children though.
