Gear Talk / Cold water wetsuit recommendations
« on: September 13, 2007, 06:46:48 PM »
I'm looking for a cold water wetsuit to extend the season at least into late fall. I'm 6'4" 250 so they will need to skin a few of those neoprene's to make me a suit....:) Anyone have info on what's good and what to look out for? Preferred manufacturer's?

Sessions / Not exactly an "Epic Session" but certainly memorable
« on: September 03, 2007, 07:51:03 PM »
OK....I stood up for the 1st time yesterday.....(sound of crowds cheering). My brother and I worked on installing (actually he installed...I held things) a new clutch in his race car for most of the morning. Once we were done we went to a local lake for him to test the paddle I made him and for me to try standup for the 1st time on his new Starboard 12'6" x 30.5" . I stood, I fell, I stood, I fell, ad nauseum....then I stood and didn't fall. I actually paddled out a 100 yards or so and then back...and stepped of into the shallows. We didn't have as much time as I'd have liked since the whole family 40+ were waiting supper for us. But what a rush that I can actually do this.

My brother then one upped my paddle gift by giving me his new Starboard. Talk about blown away. I have a lot of catching up to do. I'll be sure to stay out of any lineups. Please point this old man nub to areas where he can do no harm if you happen to see me out there.

Gear Talk / Looking for feedback on wood paddles - Save the Children
« on: August 30, 2007, 01:00:49 AM »
I've just built my 1st two paddles and I'm hooked. I know...strange fetish, but I'm stuck with it. I'm looking for info from folks with wooden paddles letting me know what they like and what they don't.

I'm planning on building another as part of a charity effort on another web forum I belong to.

The idea is to build something and auction/raffle/sell it, with the proceeds going to Save the Children. If your interested the complete blog on the construction of the 1st two paddles is already on the site.

How light? laminated? shaft bend? double bend? blade? flex? glassed? I've got some ideas of things I'd like to try. I'm looking for performance but I also want extraordinary beauty. I'd also like to know what would drive you to bid on such a paddle. Does it make sense to do nice inlays and/or carvings?

You have to love the soul in a wooden paddle.

Who's doing what and where? I'm looking for spots to stay out of the way of others while I learn. Looking for others of a like mind to hook up for some cruising and downwind rides.

Gear Talk / Wood Paddles - Hope they perform like they look.
« on: August 20, 2007, 05:29:23 AM »
I'm building my brother a SUP paddle and had the materials for two so figured I'd try a couple of designs and let him pick which he prefers. These are my 1st so they may just end up on the wall. They'll be getting tested Labor day weekend.

I've been reading all the posts regarding length, blade width, flex, and have come to the conclusion that there is no definite standard. Like so many things it will come down to personal preference. In other words I'll keep building until I get one that works. You can see a blog on the process here.

Let me know what you think.
