Gear Talk / Paddle #3

Some progress pics.

This is a straight shaft teardrop with a dovetail. I've done some "primitive" woodburning for effect.

Gear Talk / Big Board Test getting interesting
« on: November 17, 2007, 02:51:01 PM »
A good list of board makers have signed on. No doubt more to come as word gets out. He's still looking for testers and volunteers to help out. Should be a fun couple of days.

SUP General / Save the Children SUP paddle
« on: November 16, 2007, 12:49:02 PM »
Hello All,

I'll be auctioning off this paddle sometime in the next couple of weeks for a charity event at the lumberjocks.com website. http://lumberjocks.com/stc

I still need to epoxy and varnish the blade. Should be done this week. I'll post it here and on a number of other forums when it's all ready.

The paddle that the artwork has been added to is one on the left.

Pyrographic artwork....humpback cow and calf.

This paddle is meant to be mounted on the wall and will come with mahogany brackets for wall mounting. While it can and has been paddled it's too heavy for everyday use IMO.

What do you folks think I should use as a starting price?

Gear Talk / Sketches of next paddle
« on: November 07, 2007, 06:11:22 PM »
I'm cutting wood this weekend. Enough for two. One for me that doesn't weigh 12 pounds and one for Bill to actually use. The 1st two were way too heavy.

I've used the one on the left but it's destined for someones wall in a charity auction. Bill has the one on the right. It was lighter but not enough.

Here's the sketch of the next design. I'm thinking of trying a slight double bend in one of them. The shaft will form a slight dihedral in the blade and I'll be forming two pockets to capture and guide the flow. I'm trying for a very organic look. I'm going to try to get a good flex in the shaft. My shoulders have been killing me. The nice thing is that if it doesn't flex enough I'll just take of wood until it does. Hope I don't test to destruction..... ;D

Gear Talk / PonoBill's Big Board Test Fest
« on: November 06, 2007, 07:07:44 PM »
I'm posting this on a number of forums, sorry for the deja vu all over again.

Brother Bill is looking for volunteers for a festival of board and equipment testing on Maui February 15th-18th. Check with Bill for how firm that date is...this is evolving quickly and he just started posting the details at the Ponohouse. Sound's like he should have the latest boards from a bunch of the major players. If you plan on being around and this sounds like your kind of fun check out the details and give him a yell.

Technique / Basic stance - parallel or staggered?
« on: November 04, 2007, 08:30:11 PM »
I'm finding that I have better balance overall with a staggered step. Feet at the rails, halfway to surf stance. Seems to me like it makes more sense to be in this position all the time. You can stroke harder, you're already 1/2 way to surf stance so there is less movement needed when catching a wave. Why would I want to stand straighter/parallel other than for cruising?

SUP General / TS Noel passes Cape Cod

This was at 1:00 Saturday at Nauset beach. The nearest wave buoy at that time was reading 12 ft. Later that night it topped out at 28.

Look at Saturday 4pm-7pm. The Chatham break I was planning to paddle tomorrow is right at the bottom of the elbow of Cape Cod. I'm going to head down there anyway...hope I can get some pics at least.

I'm not ready for this yet...:) I think you'ld be reading about me in the news if I tried it. The Chatham break I was thinking about hitting is going to get slammed on Sat and Sun. Anybody going to be trying to SUP in this at either Chatham or Nauset?. I'd love to watch and learn.

Cammar has a similar post on the Maui surf report.

Everytime I go to the beach it seems like I pick up a truckload of plastic crap that has washed up.

SUP General / East Coast SUP Spots
« on: October 27, 2007, 01:16:05 AM »
I'm looking for some company. I'm thinking of hitting the break outside Chatham harbor sometime in the next few weekends if the conditions are good. Looks like a mile paddle from the parking lot at the lighthouse. I was watching some nice waist high rollers come in there last weekend. Looks like some long rides and the waves break...go to whitewater and then reform in spots.

I'm looking for other similar spots as well. The whole national seashore looks pretty good but the beach break is pretty short. Another longer break looks to be about 2 miles north if the Nauset beach parking lot

SUP General / Sharing spots in Google Earth
« on: October 26, 2007, 12:07:29 AM »
I'm not sure if this is something you would want to implement or not Randy but what do you think about sharing SUP spots in Google earth. I was looking at a spot on Cape Cod that is not very accessible to regular surfing but is very reachable by SUP. Here is the image but it would be great to be able to embed the kmz file.

Sessions / Up the creek with a paddle
« on: October 08, 2007, 03:03:40 PM »
I went out Friday in gusty winds and mushy chop (knee to thigh). The conditions were horrible but I was out for the workout so decided to stick with it. I figure we aren't likely to have many more 80 deg. plus days on Cape Cod until next year and the water is still warm. I could only stand on the way out while fighting the chop face on. Once I'd try to turn or go with it I'd get dumped. Just too mushy. I was about ready to give it up when my daughter showed up. She whistled me into the beach and saw I was getting killed. "Why don't you try the river" she said.

That simple suggestion made a bad day into a good one. The small creek/river that exits at the beach was a lot of fun to explore. The change of tide with the extreme calm made cruising easy. SUP offers such a great view into and around the water. Schools of bait fish in the 10's of thousands were everywhere. Small schooly stripers (5-10 lbs) all over. Eels, horshoe crabs, great blue herons and complete solitude made for a great paddle.

Then I went back for my fishing rod. I had brought along an ultralight spinning rod and some small lures in hopes of seeing some blues offshore. I paddled up stream about 1/2 mile and then started floating out with the tide. Absolute quiet broken only by the sound of my reel and the lure hitting the water. I ended up catching and releasing 10 small strippers. LOL...I fell in when I hooked the 1st one. A lot of fun and a challenging catch on an ultralight while standing on a SUP. I quickly learned to set the hook and then kneel for the rest of the short fight. Great for the fish too. I never even had to take them out of the water to release them. Barbless hooks help too.

Anyway, a whole new thing for me to do while standing.
