General Discussion / Up close and personal
« on: July 28, 2022, 07:46:23 PM »
Whale action has been nothing short of incredible the last week or so at my local. 3 or 4 juvenile Humpbacks coming in close to feed on massive bait balls of pogies. 100 yards from the beach at times. I paddled out last Friday. Witnessed a boat being bumped and had a whale surface right next to me, check me out, and then dive and glide a foot or two under my board. My phone was on my chest in a transparent dry bag and I got it all on video.

I posted it on the local FB page and it blew up, I won't do that again. No fewer than 15 requests to use the video and get interviews or statements. I foolishly did 3 interviews that afternoon for local stations thinking I could tag along some marketing for the Cape Cod Bay Challenge (our 15-year anniversary). They made the evening news. It went from 25 boats on friday to 150-200 on Saturday. Sunday the same or even more and one boat had a whale come down on it while lunge feeding and many close calls. I told all the rest I wasn't interested. But between my posts and many others it was too late, created a zoo on the water. Reminded me of the scene from Jaws when all the boats are going after the reward for the shark.

My experience was pretty amazing and not something I'll ever forget. A few people on shore sent me pictures.

General Discussion / It's official

The sticker is on my truck.

Creek knew I was interested in a Search Point Break and when he heard about a very gently used one available he gave me a call. I've been out on it twice and love the way it feels and paddles. can't wait for some surf to get it in.

I love the town of Plymouth for a lot of reasons but this is the biggest, my happy place for sure. Sky Skipper Drones takes great pictures all over New England and is based here in Plymouth, not only a good drone pilot but a talented photographer as well. https://www.skyskipperdrones.com/preview

This was yesterday. You can't see me of course but I'm out at the point in this one. The dogs took me for a walk on my birthday.... :)

SUP General / Fin Cam
« on: April 29, 2019, 09:37:06 PM »
Pono had a 4K moka cam that he wasn't using and I brought it back from Maui with me. Made a mount on my fin. Took it out today with hopes of catching some whale song. Right whales 300 yards off the point below my house and feeding just off my local beach. Didn't pick up any whale song...choppy so it was pretty noisy but the mount and cam worked fine. Should be fun to catch some underwater action when it's calm and the water is clear.

No epic surf yet for this Maui visit but it's always fun catching some waves with my brother.....of course the warm air, sunshine and water above 40 degs helps but I always especially enjoy sharing a wave with the guy that got me started....:)

SUP General / Used board market
« on: February 24, 2019, 05:03:50 PM »
I haven't looked at selling or buying a board in ages. I'd assume the market is fairly flooded these days. My son-in-law wants to sell his Coreban Alpha Race 14. I told him it's not worth 1/2 of what he paid and that he should just keep it but he says he's not interested in racing and prefers the 12-6 they have for just cruising. 2013 or 14 I believe...not carbon...wood deck...great shape. I'd guess $500 but really have no idea....thoughts.

Random / TinkerCAD

Thought Pono might like this. I just signed up...web based. Looks very interesting.....3D modeling looks very easy but it also has electronics...circuit, design, coding, simulations. Autodesk product so big name behind it....free....user base should grow quickly. I'm going to let my granddaughter play with it. She likes goofing with Sketchup and enjoys making stuff...this looks like a great STEM education tool.

Sessions / Finally
« on: November 30, 2018, 11:29:26 AM »
Been a tough month or so. Heads been all fucked up, seems especially when there have been waves. Things finally aligned and I got a few today here at home....thigh high leftovers from the good surf earlier in the week but I'll take what I can get. Beautiful sunny day, light offshore, tide was right...low incoming....clean waves...3 hours all alone. Nice recharge.... :)

Came in and realized I had locked myself out of my car. My truck wouldn't start this morning...think the battery is dead...so switched my gear and took my car but had my spare truck key on the lanyard on my neck.....doh! Good thing my wife works local....beach walker let me use her cell. The lack of action has me a bit soft....a bit beat but it feels good. The new outdoor shower is da bomb..... 8)

Reading an article about the DJI Osmo and noticed it has some features that might make it a lower cost option.

I need a new challenge. I'm going to finally start on building a board. Going to try something a bit different...or at least with my limited knowledge I think it's different. I didn't get much usable wood from the arborvitae I was thinking of using (rotted cores) so I'm going to use a combination of polyiso foam boards and cedar.
I need some rolls of glass and some epoxy. Greenlight the best place to go? What about vac bagging supplies

Random / Making Waves
« on: November 14, 2018, 07:44:44 AM »
We needed some artwork for a spot in our renovated guest bath. After years of mostly computer graphics I decided to go back to the drawing board...pun most definitely intended....:). I used to sketch a lot...like all the time. I had almost pantograph like hands when I was a kid. It's what got me started in my career as a drafter/designer.

I had bought a small pencil sketchbook...a collection of colored pencils and some paint pens. I like them because it's the easiest most forgiving medium for me as a hack artist. I have my old drawing board setup in the garage.

I Googled surf graphics and found one I liked. BTW...if you would like a print much of the much more skilled original version of this done in watercolor with a sunglass wearing dog surfing the wave I can point you there. I think I'll buy one anyway...:)

In a weird coincidence, unbeknownst to me, my wife had bought a frame for the spot. I had already trimmed down my sketch and was thinking of building a simple frame when she told me she had one....perfect fit..... 8)….and she said I nailed the colors in the bathroom....points earned..... ;D

SUP General / Hoping for one of those days

Forecast for Sunday is looking real good for a dawn patrol expedition out to Brown's Bank. Not big, but if it holds there will be some great long rides out there. The bars out there have shifted a lot since the last time the forecast lined up so I'm not sure exactly what it will be like. There seems to be an outer bar now. It needs NE swell, SW wind and slack or incoming tide for it to really work so its rare.....trick or treat I guess.... :)

If it doesn't make it all the way into the bay I may head north...or south....depends on my head. Creek should start an Uber surf service.... :)
