Foil SUP / Re: Balancing on Barricuda Style Boards
« on: April 04, 2023, 05:04:39 AM »
Ö

You can learn to stand on these boards!   6 months ago when I was trying other boards like this I could only comfortably stand in very clean conditions.  I thought there was NO way to comfortably stand up and paddle around on the Barracuda style boards.  No more.

Ö

Hi friends! Iím back and ready to foil.

Iíve learned to wind foil last summer on borrowed gear, and now getting my own gear.

I got a foil and and a 2nd hand 100L wingding board now but am looking at getting a board I can learn flat water takeoff, learn to DW, catch big boat wakes, and light wind wingding.

Iím a sailer/windsurfer/kitesurfer since like forever. Those who remember me here know Iíve been into DW on SUP long enough to be comfortable DW SUP in all kinds of conditions. Iím 5í11/175 and Iím pretty comfortable on a 100L wing foil board, even in death chop.

Iíve got a local little windy lake which is great to practice on which is windy and also flat. When the wind isnít enough my plan is to practice the flat water foil take offs.

My question is simple:
Do I get (the biggest) Kalama Barracuda right away?
 OR
As the nOOb that I am, am I better off getting a 6í5 23.5Ē E3 Kalama first to get better on before going full Barracuda?

Ideally I want just one board (and an inflatable board for plane travels).

I do have a backup a 5í7 x 27Ē 100L light wing foil board for learning. Once I manage on a longer skinny board I'd sell the learner board.

Thanks!

I'm curious. How did you determine where to put the foil in the tracks? Did you wing foil it first?

hi

Curious... Is there a rule of thumb for placement in the tracks for flat water standup paddling up with respect to where it works well for wingdinging?

Have a look into the Black Diamond JetForce backpacks which inflate avalanche airbags by battery and electric pump.

I have no idea if the battery and pump are already waterproof or can be sealed off to be waterproof. Maybe shrinkwrap plastic around it or something. Or convince Black Diamond to make a waterproof version.

If it could be waterproofed you would have both the inflating system and the backpack to carry your wing in one already made pack. It would just need an extension to the airtube for pumping up and a connector to the wing.

So.....

Found a place where you were allowed to sneak onto the water yet? Burchas, got yours yet?

Looks sweet. I'm curious how it glides for flat water paddling.

Anyway...   I'm making a mounted canon (battery-powered leaf blower) to clean pine shatz off my steeply pitched roof.  I have confidence it will work, but I am pretty much scared of heights.  I know I can control it from the peak but may need a way to do it from the ground (facing me, of course ...so I can see what it is doing.)

Jim

Here is the way a real ADHD person would deal with pine cones on a roof.

Makes a way louder boom than any battery-powered leaf blower.

No worries, Pono. I trust that you'll get around to linking those interesting articles you teased us with in the title. I totally get it that you got distracted on the way to doing that.

All I have to say is, dress for the swim.

Second that.

Just curious what folks are wearing for DW runs in ďmoderateĒ conditions.
...
But it even SUCKS to wear a 3 mil when youíre working. That paired with a PFD and Iím sweating my ass off.

What do you all do ?

I get the impression from what you say that you are overheating.

To answer your question I fall in plenty.

It's always hard to get what you wear just right. For DW's I dress for the swim, so wetsuit. I put a light one one and a windbreaker around my waist should I get cold. A simple windbreaker over a wetsuit warms you up quite a lot. Especially if you are wet and it's windy out.

lol already got the eye roll when she saw me on the forum asking about more boards haha

If I remember correctly Burcha's first posts were all about which board would fit in his apartment and car. Now he's a downwind animal.

You've been warned.

hi Kip,

Nice pic!

Yep. Nothing wrong with doing the learning curve on a clunker. Try boards here and there, and see what fits your conditions, will, and skills.

Maybe I [speed]read the thread too quick but I didnít see much mention of your height and weight. Everything is relative.

I second advice given so far...
Take one step at a time, take a board that you can go out in all conditions and work your way down very progressively down to a board that suits you.

I imagine for trails you pick your gear for what types and distances your trails will be. Same same here. Choose more long distance and all conditions gear and get good (without incurring injury) and then optimise later for gear that letís you tweak that little bit more go faster stuff.

And... just coz itís itís fun to rib A10  (mainly because I tend to agree with him - and I bought a board based just on his review once)... Youíre right Kip. Trail running has a lot of cross-over skills w SUP. SUP will improve your trial running and hopefully allow you to recover from your trial injuries. Itís all win win. (I live on the St Bernard ultra trail path and just a couple of miles from the UTMB path).

Trail running is hugely balance and path reading - just like SUP, especially in rough water conditions. Which is why you should be keeping an open mind to a board better suited for rough stuff - rather than a pure flat-water board.

Things come in waves.

Ride 'em.

nice vid, burkas!

Nice wind, nice waves, very smooth riding and excellent edit and tunes. Captures the ambiance very well.

thanks

not the best demo of something that works amazingly well.

But interesting if it does work. Simple. Simple is good.

Very nice design. One can tell just by looking at it how it works. Awesome to see hollow light boards coming out.

You mentioned it works well upwind in bumps. Do you stand in the same place as for flatwater on the board or shift a bit?

15
...
It's surprisingly easy to handle heavy wind on a port tack going upwind. the foil stays up, it seems fairly easy to spill wind when a nuclear gust hits me. But on the starboard tack, especially if I'm up on the foil, I lose control easily and wind up going downwind, which is challenging. I need to let the wing just swing out in front of me, but it's hard to remember that when the little safety dude is screaming in my ear.

I assume you surf regular, so on starboard tack youíre on your switch side.
