After reading this thread I had a chance to practice the kicking over the lip/off to the side method.  This was on smaller waves which I suspect is a good place to practice.

I normally can't watch videos with the gopro mounted on the nose cuz it looks funky but that looked good. What's the set up you're using? Is that Encinitas area?

Thanks!  I am the same way and can't watch the nose mount either, this is why i built my own elevated mount.
Here is the thread:

Thanks Sean!  Right on, Stretch is my favorite shaper also, I'll have to adjust the camera angle to give him proper full logo credit.  ;)
Yeah Stretch makes SUPs and they do the glassing for L41, seems like Bill makes all boards and any time I get into some new genre of surfing I can count on him to make a great board for the wave.  SUP is still small and growing in SC, and the proners are still learning to accept us.   :D

Thanks PB.  Good tips.  I am working on patting my head and rubbing my stomach at the same time, the few times I have tried switching hands and planting the paddle I have fallen over.  Part of the fun of SUP and surfing is always some new challenge to take on.  :)

I surfed the SC Paddlefest today and all those little pro #@%&ers make it look so easy!  Good on them

Thanks Robert.  I hope all is well.

Clay:  I am unclear what you are asking when you say similar setup for shallow water?

In one of your vid's there's a snapshot of your rig, which if I recall shows the gopro being about waist high, or higher....for shallower water application, I'm wondering what the vid might look like if the camera was only about a foot or so off the board?  I'm guessing with your current rig you try to stay in fairly deep water the majority of the time so as to avoid having your rig come in contact with the bottom when the board flips over, no?

Hope that makes sense.

Sorry in advance to the OP if this is a thread hijack.

Well WhatsSUP the short answer is I don't know.

I often surf kelp beds where the relative depth can be zero feet, and the pole has hit the kelp and come unstuck.  I suspect the closer to the board the cam is the more it will give a looking up view that distorts size and makes it difficult to see what's going on.  I choose the height of my pole cam so that it's high enough to give a bigger picture view of wave, surfer, board, and not to high/long that it becomes absurdly unmanageable.  I have had the pole cam flip over and hit the bottom a couple times in shallow water and no damage and it was all good.  It seems like with the amount of leverage the pole has it's a crap shoot as to whether it will hit something and either hold up or break.  Makes for an exciting session either way.  ;D

Clay:  Just fantastic clarity and overall video awesomeness.  No at all shaky which would be incredibly irritiating.  I'm thinking your forward cam setup looks rather unruly and all but boy o'boy, the video quality is some of the best I've seen!  Good on you!

I wonder though, is there a similar setup solution out there for shallower water - like rides at shallow beach breaks or low tide events where water and rides are frequently rides are into waist deep water or less (???)

Thanks WhatsSUP!  I appreciate the feedback.  Yeah the possibility of it being shaky almost kept me from trying to make this mount in the first place, I was surprised when I saw the first test footage and it was mostly smooth.  The other pole that I normally use is quite a bit more stable than this one, in the above video I can see a little shake here and there in the video.  Man o man the first time I paddled out with this pole cam, even in small surf, I was anxious and quite uncomfortable as it seemed like a train wreck waiting to happen.  The more I surf with the pole the more comfortable I am with it, I have been out in overhead surf a couple times now and it doesn't feel sketchy to me anymore.

I am unclear what you are asking when you say similar setup for shallow water?

I bought a used tradesman shell/cap painted it and put Yakima track racks on there.  I have done several trips from SF to San Diego and back (800 miles) with 2 SUPs, 2 longboards, and few short boards up there while doing 70-90 in strong winds.  No problems.  When I started putting six 14 foot DW boards up there I added some additional aluminum tracks with d-rings for a second set of tie down straps.

This outfit has metal free tie down straps that seem like a cool idea, the one I have is bit long and probably overkill for boards.   I like it as failsafe that I can wrap 6 SUPS with.

I tried the lighter version of the carbon camera pole after reinforcing and adding more attachment points.  It held well and being 8 ounces lighter I felt more comfortable trying more maneuvers, a reentry landed a bit hard and one of the attachment points broke off, an actual plastic piece that was epoxied inside the carbon sheared off.  All the carbon remained solid.  The gopro remote stays on after charging and I forgot to turn it off, also the SD card was almost full so I only recorded about a third of the session and missed my best and biggest waves including when the camera pole broke.   Still a super fun session and the one bomb I caught really whetted my appetite for SUPing in some larger surf.  :)

After reading this thread I had a chance to practice the kicking over the lip/off to the side method.  This was on smaller waves which I suspect is a good place to practice.  I also tried a technique SUPAlon told me he saw in a Kalama video, which is plant the paddle in front of the foam and pull myself up and over while bracing.  They both worked as I made it over.  In this session I had a comedy of errors and the gopro remote battery was dead and the SD card was almost full, so continuously recording I only captured about a third of the session.

Downwind and Racing / Winter Downwinder - San Francisco Bay - Video
« on: March 14, 2016, 02:18:54 PM »
Some of the biggest and most lined up downwind conditions I have seen in the east/south bay (Alameda) on Friday.  Wind was mid twenties with gusts in the thirties+ (MPH).

I suspect the long runup that south wind swells have from the Dumbarton to Alameda give the bumps time to build and organize. Right off the bat I was in some fun bumps and feeling quite rusty, it took a few minutes for me to get my downwind sea legs.

The first few rides were good size, so fun and easy and loooong, very much the opposite of the usual spring and summer Alameda DW run.

I'm wondering if the south bay is the opposite in spring and summer and the best runs are from say candlestick to Hayward?
Sure will be fun finding out.  :)

Hi,

I hope you heal and get back in the water soon.  Surgery and 20 stitches and 2 occurrences that all sounds scary and I imagine a source of anxiety, I wish you and your wife well.

I am going to share my personal story of skin care and hopefully this is helpful, and if not that's okay.

A few years ago as winter arrived my skin started to feel dry and itchy and and there were visible signs of white dry skin around my knuckles and I had a flaky scalp.  This happened every winter for as long as I can remember and my usual reaction was to use moisturizing lotion on my skin and conditioner in my hair.  My mom had dry hands for a long as I can remember and her solution was to lube up her hands and wear gloves while she slept.  So this particular winter I was a few years into a WAP/primal/paleo diet and I had read several blogs of people who have gone no "poo" meaning they quit using shampoo, and then when comfortable with that they also stopped using soap.  A decade or so earlier I remember reading a Denver Bronco's trainer saying that if our knuckles are visibly dry it's because we aren't eating enough oils.  So on this winter I was ready to give the no "poo" thing a shot, and after a month I quit using soap also.  I was divorced at the time and scared I would stink or be labeled a "dirty hippy" and be alone the rest of my life.  Since then my skin stopped being dry and I don't stink and I am married again.  My main reason for trying it was that my hunch was that the skin is able to care for itself and that soap and other cleansers only get in the way and prevent our skin from being healthy.  I read that Wingnut had MS and how he suspects a lack of sun might have been the cause as they don't have it tropical cultures (I suspect their more connected and relaxed way of life also plays a role).  I also researched sun screen and switched to a less toxic brand and then stopped using it all together last year.  Now the only time my skin feels dry is on my hands after washing the dishes with soap or if I get something on my hands and use soap because there isn't an oil based cleaner available.  I also took a look at how afraid I had been of the sun, it began to seem really strange and unnatural to me that we are the only culture on this planet that is terrified of being outside in the sun.  So I began to practice appreciating and being grateful for the sun and spending more time with the sun and continue to do so now.

Love to all

Sessions / Cutback session - video
« on: March 09, 2016, 10:07:27 AM »
I love love love that SUP surfers are friendly and welcoming, surfing and life are so much richer when we give time to seeing and acknowledging each other.

Super fun practicing moving my feet rail to rail and really committing to my turns.  Awesome workout too, after the first wave in this video I was quite tired and had some missteps on the next wave.

The pole cam feels pretty solid and I hope our beach break cleans up before the spring winds arrive, looking forward to getting barreled with this cam. :)

The first test of the bamboo pole broke right off the bat, getting out my board flipped over and the bamboo pulled right through the attachment bolts.  I will re-imagine how to connect it.
