Ah I see now, I was hitting the preview button and the preview would just show a link with no embedded video.  But posting does work and the preview button displays inaccurately.  Thanks!

Hi,

So I have unsuccessfully been trying to embed videos, and I'm wondering what the rule/secret is?

I have tried youtube, vimeo, facebook, url, no url, video id, iframe, bbc codes, and most the time the result is an active link to the video but no embedded video...wondering if maybe my account doesn't have permission to embed?

I appreciate it if anyone can enlighten me on what is required to embed a video?

Hi Clay, thanks for your thread as I'm in the midst of a similar decision process.  Did you do any runs on the 14X28 bumprider?  I want more stability than the bullet 14 also, but unsure about going all the way to the 30 wide....

Steve at bluerush had a used bamboo bump rider at 14x28, so I have purchased this but I have yet to ride it.  Hoping to try it out next week when I get back in town.  I bought it for other smaller folks that paddle with me.  I'll report back after I give it a go.

I went out for a downbreeze (15+mph) run on the 14x28 bumprider today, having paddled it a few times in various conditions over the past couple weeks it's noticeably faster than the 14x30 and also noticeably more tippy.  It feels more stable than the bullet V2 to me.  Stable enough that I feel comfortable enough on it in most conditions, the exception being long runs in rough water where I suspect I would get to tired balancing.  In today's downbreeze run it was noticeably easier to get into bumps and faster in all directions.  Where I struggled was in going down the line or across the wave, once on a bump I was expending more energy staying on the board.  It's quicker in all directions and more opportunity for turning, lifting the nose, and connecting bumps, all of which required more foot work, bracing, and paddle steering on my part and was a great workout.  To sum up less work to get into bumps but more work to stay on them.  For wind under 20 days I suspect the 14x28 will be my choice and for over 20 the 14x30.

Great comments!  I'm really appreciating this discussion.

Sweet spot and positioning on the board resonates with me, seems like the lighter the wind the smaller the sweet spot is and it's a lot more work to power up and catch bumps.  As the wind gets stronger it's easier to catch and ride longer and the sweet spot gets bigger.

I've been going to smaller blades with more flex in the blade and shaft and it feels better on my body.  My body aches when trying to power up and catch DB bumps using a bigger blade and stiff shaft, I prefer a higher cadence with less torque and more give.

I have tried a X14 in small DB, and while I felt faster I didn't feel like I was riding the bumps, felt more like I was slicing through them.  I've tried both the bullet V2 and the X14 at the same knee to waist high point break and I got longer rides on the X14 on the bigger waves, on the smaller ones the X14 seemed like more work to catch and stay on the wave than with the V2.  Also walking closer to the nose seemed to slow me down on the X14, where as this usually gives a little more speed on DW boards.  I'm not sure why?

Hi,

Thanks for starting this thread, the run near my house is often in the downbreeze category with wind in the low to mid teens.  Very interested in hearing more comments.  I'm a bigger guy and most of the mentioned boards are to tippy for me, I suspect a wider version of the bullet v2 would be the call for me, I hope to try the Ace or Fanatic some day.

Technique:  I have found going on a ebb tide (current going opposite the wind swell) helps a lot.  Also on my run there are plenty of spots where the water is only a couple feet deep and the bumps get steeper and easier to catch and ride.  I often paddle perpendicular or at a 45 degree angle to the swell and hunt/wait for the bigger bumps.  Standing closer to the nose and only stepping back a half step or so helps me get more/longer rides.  Paddling really really hard is sometimes the only way I catch bumps in these conditions.

In this video it was mid teens, ebb tide, and I was mostly in shallow water:

Update:  I did a short downwind run on the focus bluefin, I'm still shocked that I managed to stay on a board that narrow, ultimately it's a little to tippy for me in rough waters.

So I ended up buying a Blue Planet Bluerush Bump rider 14x30.  The light weight, stability and rail shape are what sold me.  I did a downwind run a couple days ago and had a blast, really stable, catches bumps, and surfs really well.  It surfs so well I'm stoked to try it in bigger conditions.  Here's a short video of the run:

[threaddrift] tell us more about the Bluefin. I like the looks of that board. Like how does it compare to a BulletV2?

I was a while on a stable 28" wide (M14) and now over a year on 27" Rogue Rage. I think I'm ready for 26" soon. I tried Jav 2014 14' x26  from buddies and like it.

Well I tried both boards in similar downwind conditions and I was a bit more stable on the Bluefin.  Both boards are to tippy for me so I was mostly struggling to stay on the board and unable to enjoy riding bumps.  I like the handle and rail shape of the bullet v2 better.  Upwind and crosswind the Bluefin nose seemed to get pushed around by bumps, while the Bullet penetrated resurfaced and held it's course.  If had to choose I would pick the Bullet v2 for downwind and surfing, and the Bluefin for flatwater/race.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.  I made it to 101 surf sports today, awesome shop and amazing selection of boards to demo.

I paddled:  Jimmy Lewis m-14, naish glide 14 gs, SIC 12'6', starboard freeride 12'2x30,  focus bluefin 14x26 and 12'6x27.

I would love try the jimmy lewis in good DW.  I liked the speed and stability of the starboard freeride, I later tried it in small downwind and felt really stable and caught bumps although I felt like it's not enough board for me. 

The focus bluefin was the biggest surprise for me, unbelievably stable and felt fast!  I'm trying that board tomorrow in small downwind and hopeful that I'll be stable and be able to pick up the small bumps.

If I'm on the shuttle and there is someone who has never done the run before, I will always stay with them, just a little bit of good karma.
Find that sticking with the group is quite a different experience, sharing the fun and the experience of the day can often be more rewarding than beating the gang, just my personal 2 cents worth.

Great words!  I agree and am stoked to see this added to the discussion.

Thanks for all the posts, pics, and ride reports, very helpful!

I had a quick session on the F14 in small backwashy howling offshore surf.  I loved the stability and the rocker felt fast on a wave, a couple times I thought I missed the wave and then the board took off.  Weight wise it feels very close to my shaka, quite heavy to carry and I felt like it took a lot of energy to power up.  If this was my first downwind board, I would definitely get the F14, as it is I find it to close to what I have now.  I wish SIC made a Bullet v2 two inches wider, around 29.5 in the same light weight construction.

So it seems like the flatter rocker downwind boards that have the lighter carbon construction and are 29 or wider are:

Naish Glide 2014 GX 14x29.5
Imagine Connector carbon 2015 14x29.5

Any comments on these boards and how they ride relative to the SIC boards or the shaka?

Are there any 12'6" that are wider and with lighter construction?

If you plan to surf - then try the JL M-14 with a loose surf fin.  Very nice ride on a big feeling 28" board that will plane much easier with a small fin.  M-14 has much more volume and stability compared to the 14V2.  Only use the big Weedless tracker fin for stability.  See if your dealer can get one of those under your feet. 

My main purpose for this board is DW in small sloppy conditions, if it surfs well that's a bonus. 

How does the JL M-14 compare to the Bullet 14v2 for catching tiny messy bumps, both powering up and maintaining glide?

I have his 10 foot Black and Blue machine and love it.

Wow!  Thanks for posting this, great video and I suspect it will save lives.  Glad to hear you guys made it back safely with your gear.  I really liked the edit, the end had me on an emotional roller coaster and I felt like I was living the experience.
