Those waves are def the best for you yet! Would like to see some beach pov while you're riding the pole cam board.
Love this pov and the wave!
Thanks!

Gear Talk / Re: Best Surf Paddle?
« on: January 23, 2016, 12:54:37 PM »
I hope the right paddle finds you.

I had the shaft on a new paddle snap a couple months ago, it had only been a handful of sessions and was very disappointed.  The paddle had a small blade and great flex and super light, in hindsight it was so light and flexy it makes sense that it snapped.  I am very tall with long arms and can easily put a lot of leverage on any paddle, especially a long paddle made for my height.

Here is the video of the paddle snap:

I was bummed because that paddle seemed like my best hope for a small blade with a flexy shaft.  I ended up replacing it with a Kialoa Hulu Blend, pretty light, small blade, and nice amount of flex.  So far I like it a lot for surfing.  It feels very strong and durable and I'll be shocked if it breaks.  It was on sale which is awesome.

Nice vid, great conditions.
My local beach break has been either huge or stormy for what seems like months, I'm looking forward to some sunny clean days like you scored here.

This is probably the juiciest swell I have taken the pole cam out in.  I had some steep drops and fast sort of hollow faces, first time I am out in conditions like this on a SUP.  All new and exciting like learning to surf all over again, really, really, really fun!  :)

Just read through and watched the vids in this thread.Except for the one w/the "On Two One Two" soundtrack since I'd already watched that twice. You are really dedicated to the development of the tripod mount and it shows. Great work, Clay!
I wonder what results you would get on a mackin' day like I was just out in here in NJ. Making me wanna try the tripod!
This is your standard from the beach pov off my Panasonic Luminex mounted on a SOLOSHOT2.  1/16/16

Thanks Cook!  Nice shots!  I am also wanting to see how it does on a macking day, I am still a little concerned about getting caught inside and having a total yard sale and while fumbling with my gear I take out myself or someone else.  I think I have discovered  a way to make the quick release efficient enough to have it pop back on in a second or 2, right now it's a bit clumsy and takes to long to put back on and I have been paddling to the channel first and then reattach it.

Thanks amigos!

I appreciate the positive feedback  ;D

Cool stuff.  Looks like you were surfing in front of the 'pooh shack' at Lindemar.

I am getting more interested in using video to help improve performance.

For example the shot below it appears as though the paddle is fluttering.  Is this my imagination?  Some of the strokes appear to be waffling left right.
Thanks Beasho.

Yes that's the spot.

I definitely find watching the video replay in slow motion helps me see and refine all my techniques, especially when I watch it the same day and still have the live event fresh in my memory.

I see and feel the "waffling", why I am not sure.  Could be my sloppy paddle technique or could be the blade shape?  I find I have better control with a flexier shaft, feels like I can plant and setup with more control, especially if I am paddling hard to catch a wave.  I hear dihedral is supposed to help with flutter, seems like they put these on a shafts that are to stiff for my taste...

Mean!

That is a great perspective for video or stills. Loved the video, nice empty waves, looked like that golden time of day and nice riding. Felt like I was out there! Where (general area) was this shot? NorCal?

I just shot two videos that I posted on another thread using a nose mount. My JL has a cool FCS mount built in. I couldn't help thinking how much better both of those vid's would have been with the pole mount. That was really fun to watch, I'm going back for seconds, especially since we rarely get nice clean sunset sessions here (wind comes up).

Can you post a picture of the mount?

Thanks!

Saw your video, your surfing is great, and I agree and I also wanted to see a "bigger" picture with a pole mount.  Here is a thread with some photos, I can post an updated pic if need be:

OK, I'm convinced, going to have to try a pole mount. How high is yours?

Sweet!  Glad to hear my pole "ministry" is attracting converts.   The gopro bolt is about 26" above the deck.

SUP General / Re: Board recommendation for a big fast wave?

I hear reluctance, I'd  sure be hesitant to pull the trigger after breaking 3 boards.  Choosing a SUP is challenging and I empathize with your dilemma and sincerely hope you find a great board.

I can recommend carbon rails, I already gave my new Stretch a few good paddle whacks and not a scratch, definitely a great upgrade.

SUP seems so relatively new and unknown to me that I was very reluctant to get a custom, especially since the resale of sups in norcal is so slow.   Then I had an experience that convinced me that a custom SUP is the best for me.  I demoed a production 8'4" simsup and although I loved the light weight I flailed around for 2 hours and didn't catch a single wave.  So I asked Kirk and he recommended I try the 8'8".  I didn't think 4" would make much difference, and I was wrong as I was very stable on that board and had a really fun session.  But the tail seemed so wide and the board a bit clunky so I was hesitant and waited for a used one, fortunately I found a used custom that is 5 litres smaller and the same shape.  Wow!  Huge difference from the production version, the custom feels so alive and responsive.  First SUP session I had that I thought wow I want to try this in the winter.

I wish I had gone custom sooner I'm  sure I would have made the transition from prone to full time SUP a lot sooner if I had the custom boards I have now.

I hope this helps.

Clay. That's great you have the snap off function working. That certainly looked challenging conditions. Looking forward to that perfect shot coming soon! I'd be interested to know where you buy your carbon tubes from as I'm keen to start modifying a rig I have here which is way too heavy.
Thanks Robert.

There is a local place here in Livermore called ACP Composites, I have also received some good stuff from www.dragonplate.com

What a wonderful new year! After changing the snap off point of the pole a good test day arrived and I gave it a go. Conditions were very challenging as the wind was howling off/side shore. The rights were almost uncatchable with all that wind in my chest, just staying upright long enough to get into the left was an accomplishment. The cam pole worked great, staying put while paddling and popping off on every wipeout. I am stoked that it works, and seeing how it functions has already given me ideas on a simple way to improve it. Next I want to try it on a barreling day and see if I can score that classic shot...

I tried the 2/3 cut carbon tube piece as coupling/snap off point for my camera pole, took me a few cuts to get it right, and it works great as a wipeout quick release system.

Here is some video from the first test today:

Reran it! I dig that jam, just might use it after I play around w/some leads to it! Maybe too ambitious?! I'm so stoked on music and surfing and this vid fits the bill for that perf! And that graffiti logo at access is SWEET!

Right on!  Glad to hear it  :)

And I have a loooong history of buying the wrong board so I'm trying to avoid that this time around.

Wow I sure can relate to this statement!

For me buying off the shelf boards was a very expensive and unfruitful way to go about finding the right board.  That all changed when I went with a local shaper and stuck with him even when I received boards that didn't work for me.  Every once in a while I am tempted by the siren song of the immediate gratification of an off the shelf board and then I remember how much more I enjoy custom boards, even with a long wait.

I am wondering where your quiver and your surfing would be today if after breaking that first board you committed to a local shaper and custom boards built for you and that wave?

I echo the recommendations for shapers Clark or Kirk and Stretch had some SUP guns at the factory a couple months ago, I suspect any of the three will provide you with an amazing experience that will be worth the wait.  Maybe they will have a demo board to get you through the winter?
