Took about 27 sessions to figure how to ride toe side consistently AND go upwind, and now my jibes have come along a few sessions later.

My first next choice would be to do some downwinders, but beach access right now is limited and logistics complicated.

So for now probably have to continue "mowing the lawn".  I'm thinking a harness might make this easier or less exertion on the arms/shoulders.  But a metal hook and a surfboard sounds like a terrible combination.

So is there a harness for newbs?  One without a metal hook?  Or does the harness easily rotate around back for climbing back on the board?  And technique wise do you hook in before getting up on the foil or after?

Here's video from the past couple weeks:

Foil SUP / Florida Foil Spot?
« on: March 15, 2020, 12:57:47 PM »
I check Surfline and the cam of the day is in Florida, and I see this capper peak way outside of where the surfers are sitting.  No one on it, then I see jet skis playing on it, no foil tow ins.  I'm like what the heck, looks like a great foil peak, how come no one is on it?

Foil SUP / New ultralight foil motor for catching unbreaking waves
« on: February 17, 2020, 07:09:15 AM »
Curious if anyone else sees potential for using this to catch unbreaking waves?

I know a handful of spots that on certain tides/swell the waves are ridable but uncatchable, only for towing in.

I have been messing with 360 cameras a lot lately, seems like they have reached the point of being convenient enough to be an everyday camera.  For surfing GoPro has released the Max, Insta360 has a new One R, there's the old Garmin 360.   Some other interesting cameras out there but as far as know there are only 3 cameras that are waterproof with no need for a housing.

My current favorite is the GoPro Max, it works reliably, image quality looks good, and the software is stable.  The Insta360 One R is very promising but so far I have been struggling to get it to work reliably.  The Garmin is solid hardware wise, but the stitching sucks, and the software crashes a lot, plus side is the gps data is easy to access and overlay, also I have heard Garmin is pulling out of the market.

Anyone know or try any other 360 cameras?

Here is a video I recorded the past couple weeks, we have had a good run of swell and I am super stoked with how the video looks:

Foil SUP / 1000 Yard Ride - Paddle in Speed Run!
« on: November 17, 2019, 04:03:56 PM »
Longest ride I have ever had!  As far as I know the previous recorded record for us was around 800 and something yards by either Beasho and/or Jeff Clark.   This is what I love about cowells, lean forward and hold on and with little to no pumping get really long rides when the swell is firing.  Two days of good swell, Friday was really good, epic conditions and all around super fun time sharing waves with good friends!

I am certain that when we get a really big swell 1200 yards or more is possible...

After a week of weak up and down wind I scored a couple hours of near 20 mph wind.  Did a short solo downwind run, parking the wing in neutral for much of the run and was able to ride bumps most of the way. Total blast and way easier than I guessed it would be.

The whole ocean is a surf spot now, the wingding gives everyone enough power to get up on the foil and ride.

I biked up to the jump point with my 7m, i didn't trust that the wind would hold and was surprised to see it had increased.  As soon as my back hand grabbed the handle I knew I was overpowered and barely pulled down to get up on the foil and be flying.

For some reason I thought riding the bumps heelside would be easier.  Turns out I had an easier time toe side holding the wing above and across my body, pulling down to catch a bit of wind if I went to far on the shoulder or in the flats.

I've been failing to downwind bump foil for almost 3 years, and now all the pieces of the puzzle have finally fallen into place.  I'm beyond stoked!   ;D

Classifieds / Signature 4m wing surfer hand kite

Orange signature 4m air wing or whatever we calling these wing dings.

Only tried it a handful of times, to small for my weight and usual wind.

A great feature that is woefully missing on other brand wings is the bladder tube that connects the main wing to the center struts.  The air flow on the Signature is great, inflates and deflates quickly.   Other brands the airflow kinks and need to manually roll out the air from the center strut.

Finally!

Today I had a huge breakthrough and was wing dinging all over the water, heel side and bit toe side too.

The only thing I had left to try was a huge board, I have exhausted all the other factors and if that didn't work - I was the problem.

I went with a 180 liter board, 50 liters more than my daily driver foil board.  I was super reluctant to try it because I knew I wouldn't ride it any other foil discipline.

Having a stable platform to stand on allowed me to go both perpendicular to the wind and upwind in rough water, and then
get enough board speed to lift and fly in any direction I wanted for as long as my legs could handle.  Toes facing upwind was a bit more challenging and I could only go downwind or a bit less than perpendicular, holding the wing across my body felt really unnatural.

Yesterday I discovered I could wingsurf on a small board in offshore wind with smooth surface conditions, in rough onshore conditions I had flailed miserably on that same smaller board.

I'm glad I ignored the seeming trend towards smaller boards.  All the techniques for balance and pumping up on the foil did nothing to help me fly.  Yeah they helped get up on the foil but with out enough power and speed i would fall right back down.

My setup today was 7m wing, 2400 foil, 180 liter 8 foot board, and the iwindsurf sensor had the wind averaging 15mph. I weigh 200 pounds.

I have heard and experienced cracks, leaks, separations, rip outs, and such of various boxes which then leads to taking in water and a heavier board which makes flying harder.

So I am wondering what's a good technique for building / repairing a track (fin) box or tuttle box or strap box or insert????  Specifically the outermost point of contact, either where our foils are in contact with the board or our feet are in contact with the board.  As in laying resin/fiberglass/carbon to the edge of a track box opening or over an insert box.  How to bond the glass to the plastic box?  And if the glass cracks or separates from the box how then to waterproof this?

My experience is that the traditional methods aren't strong or durable enough for the forces of foiling.

Anyone have any longer term experience with production foil boards and can testify to the board being more water tight than a custom?

Ideas?

Foil SUP / 150 Foil Sessions - Video
« on: January 09, 2019, 08:20:27 AM »
I made another video documenting 76-150 of my foil sessions.  I had planned to stop at 100 but I wasn't able to get footage of some of the best days so I kept going.  20, 30, even 50 sessions in I still had my doubts about ever having good control of the foil.  I am very pleased that I stuck with it, so much fun!  I hope these videos help anyone that might be struggling.

Foil SUP / 15 inch track/fin box - plate mounts?
« on: November 12, 2018, 09:00:13 PM »
Hi,

I have seen some 15" track or fin boxes that seem to be "vintage" as in ripped out of old windsurf boards.  Also Calumet makes kite foil boards that have plate mounts that are 15 inches long.  Anyone heard of these being made or know where to get them?

Thanks!

Foil SUP / Frozen foil wing fix - Video
« on: October 20, 2018, 06:27:06 PM »
I had a carbon wing frozen on an aluminum fuse.  After a week of failed attempts I was bummed it might be stuck on their for good.

After taking a break and spitballing some ideas with a friend I finally got the wing off:

I also thought about a winch or something but was concerned about high speed flying foil parts.

Foil SUP / 75 Foil Sessions - Video
« on: August 05, 2018, 07:16:59 AM »
Hi,

75 sessions and counting, I made a video of most of my foil sessions from day 1 to day 75, and some bonus footage at the end:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on_BUHVyxJI

I went from extreme frustration and at times hopelessness, to super stoked and all I want to do is go foil surfing!!!  So looking forward to some good swells!  I hope this is enjoyable and helpful.
