Foil SUP / Re: Axis 860 vs 900
« on: February 25, 2021, 01:38:57 PM »
I have ridden double gull shape wings of other brands and had trouble feeling at home on them.  My understanding is they were designed for kiting fully powered up on tiny little boards zig zagging around continually turning to one side and then the other, with no interest in straight line cruising or speed.

900 is my favorite axis wing so far.  I am wondering how flat wings of equal or larger span turn better than the 900?  Love to see someone ripping turns on them.

I would love it if everyone would give their ride reports by distinguishing between:

1 - how a foil feels when turning (loose, responsive, maneuverable, etc...).

2 - and the foils ability to actually do a turn (as in needs just the right section to carve a tight turn, or can lay it over anytime and carve rail to rail without any concern of tip stall).

With all these new wings it's difficult to decide, I'm hoping I get a text from Evan soon saying he's got a van full of the new wings to demo...

I've seen half a dozen in as many years.  One great big one that spooked me big time, it a was a remote spot known for big marine life.

Up north at a popular begginner spot a juvenile 8-10 footer was swimming in and around a 100 people, the prone surfers were to low to the water and couldn't see the shark.  That same spot has had many sightings in the past few years and no attacks.

Last year there was a fatal attack of a prone surfer at manresa, we had sup foiled there a couple months before, none of us have been back there since.  In recent years there have been tons of sightings near the cement ship of juveniles, my theory is those sharks have grown up and stayed in the bay.

For me it's about the right tool for the job.

When I started foiling I had already made the switch to 100% sup surfing.  At the time pretty much everyone was learning via sup foil.

Then 3 years ago the prone foilers were ripping and it made switching seem very appealing. West coast foil club, etc...

Then Derek Hamasaki was blowing everyone's mind with his sup pumping and radical lay back turns.  Shorter sup allowed me to progress and made switching seem less appealing.

The 2 best foilers in norcal both sup foil.  If the prone guys were raising the bar the highest that might tempt me.

If I lived in FL or somewhere with mush Beach break prone would be appealing.   When ocean beach is small a handful of prone foilers are present.  At head high or bigger usually zero.

In 4 years of foil surfing I have only had one run in with a fellow foiler acting like a jerk.  Guess what board he was on?

Wow that's a trip!

I'd love to know HOW this happened, lot's of people wondering and speculating the same in the yt comments...

The content belongs to big movie studio, no way to monetize directly.   Figure out how to replicate and have hundreds of videos with millions of views, that's my understanding of how to make substantial income from views.

90kg+ guy looking for wing ding foil, I would and did get an Axis setup, and for winging the new black stuff looks fun.  Very robust, durable, and functional foils.  And if I guess wrong on what to buy the resale is good, I was able to sell a front wing for what I paid for it, I have bought and sold a lot of foils and that's first time I didn't take a bath.

Admin that sounds like a total bummer, a big loss.  Poop.  Hope the other happy places in your life keep the stoke high.

If you ever want to collaborate on a many hands video project I'd love to hear about it.

My 5 year old and I have comfort levels on different planets.  I am stoked when he is up for some little waves, and we have discovered dune sledding which is pretty fun.  Most days some driftwood or the sand castle kit is the go to gear of the day...

Winter in Santa Cruz is phenomenal, ridiculously high concentration of quality breaks with tons of swell.  Summer can be very depressing, weeks of flat and foggy followed by a good swell with 100+ people out at every break all scratching for the same 3-5 wave set every 15 minutes.  North and South of town are wide open with lots of big sharks.  Regularly windy in the summer, so wind sport can be a game changer.  Oh and high tide puts a lot refraction/backwash into the waves, very challenging to stand on sup.

San Clemente in the summer blows my mind, warm air and water, sunny, lots of waves, not that crowded...

Foil SUP / Re: Mast position fore/aft on the fuselage. Care to speculate?
« on: February 07, 2021, 12:18:37 AM »
I’m not buying the stance argument. All brands have available fuse lengths from long to super short. That plays into stance width the most.

I’ve owned foils with masts all over the place on fuselages. There is a “feel” difference when the mast is more forward, than back, on a fuse. It is not comfortable for me, when mast is too far forward on the fuse. The ride is nervous, less drive, more wandering.

I have had a similar feel experience.  Also found moving mast back has the opposite effect and dampens/delays movement/reactivity in a way that creates a easier ride for beginners, and can lead to "speed wobbles" at higher speeds/bigger waves.

A couple gale events with nuking northerly winds this month in California.  First one was more offshore and dangerously strong.

Today was another one, more NW in direction, lots of 30-40+ winds.  I went to Cowells to sup foil, was tolerable when we paddled out, gusting high 20s or more when we gave up, blowing straight offshore and felt pretty sketchy towards the end of our session.  Exciting in a way, as many foilers as regular surfers, more prone foilers.  Pretty fun and glad everyone came in safe.

Did you go out?  Wing? Surf foil? surf?  Where?

What do you mean “getting“

That was my first thought as well.

Stuff like this feels scary, and here in CA it usually doesn't get very far as the back lash squashes it before becoming a law.

One of my buddies was playing on the beach with his wife and young kids on a 20ft day (no wetsuits or boards with them).  Another married couple came to the beach looking for mussells, they weren't paying attention and got swept into the surf, my buddy rescued the husband and the wife was to far out and already unconscious and drowned.  My buddy had his hands full with his kids and the husband was very lucky that he could get to him and be rescued.

It's been pumping here for the past month and I have heard several stories like this.  I suspect licensing would be pointless and useless.  I'd like to see more local efforts from surfers and waterpeople to welcome newbs and "kooks" into the water and show them how to be safe.

Foil SUP / Re: Tail wings bolt pattern - compatibility
« on: January 20, 2021, 10:50:36 AM »
Thanks for the posts!  Heard back from Kane -

These brands have the same bolt pattern (30mm center to center):
Unifoil, SPG, gofoil, F-one, takuma, F4, mfc, nsp.

These have the same (35mm center to center):
Axis, NP, and Naish.

Cloud9 is 45mm.

Moses is like 28mm?

Early on in my learn to foil experience I switched to a smaller high performance foil.  This enabled me to continue using my inefficient technique, until I went out on bigger days and my inadequate technique surfaced again as did my wing right before I did a high speed face plant.  I eventually went back to bigger more stable lifty wings and this time I played with my stance and made stabilizer adjustments until I learned how to manage bigger wings.
