Gear Talk / Re: Blade shape on paddles (spoon or straight)
« on: June 16, 2009, 04:12:17 PM »
I use the PowerEx paddle for almost a year now I've tried lots of different paddles and always come back to the smooth npower and lightness Plus I trust SO designs (nothing else like I've ever seen) & PowerEx construction.

BTW they've added a nick proof edge to this paddle no more need for paddle guards (added weight & drag

Just an amazing paddle

« on: June 16, 2009, 04:06:53 PM »
Just a note the Dakine Coil leashes are ONLY for flatwater  use No waves

They definitely reduce drag in flatwater.

For surf I REALLY like the Dakine Kai Nui 12' the detachable cuff is more useful than you think. I've pulled the "pin" more than once!

How about the Starboard Pocket Rocket (A quad Stinger 8'5 X 30") It isn't a custom but it comes in lighter constructions and unlike customs comes with a full warranty

I'd stick with the longer boards. I love the naish boards but for a higher performance "longer board" it is REALLY hard to beat the Starboard 11'2. And not to mention you can get them in lighter & stiffer constructions (now that you are more experienced) that will help its performance in both flatwater & waves (particularly smaller waves

Andy,

It pays to do it right the first time. We do a lot of Flatwater/freshwater paddling and getting the right size is critical. Here are the ones we've liked so far

C4 Vortice not cheap and maybe a bit to much rocker for pure flatewater like you proposed, but still a great option

Starboard POINT 14'8" This board FLYS in flatwater the optional steering just adds to it glide. handles chop well too!

Naish GLIDE 12'6" looks to be the cream of the crop in a more manageable size probably not as fast as the bigger boards

One other thing to consider VERY closely is getting the right paddle Most SUP paddles are set up for Surf use. By far the best racing (flatwater) paddle is the C4 Carbon Kevlar XPR. This paddle is light durable and has the perfect (snap) release to really get you humming

There are some other more all around boards that could be considered as well as some closeouts to keep the costs in line but if you are interested in them please contact me directly

Gear Talk / Re: starboard "pocket rocket"
« on: January 25, 2009, 04:56:34 AM »
Here is a good way to Figure if that board will float you

Number of Liters X 1.87 = Pounds of floatation in freshwater at sea level

In this case

141L X 1.87 = 263# of floatation in freshwater at sealevel Here in NEW Jersey (USA) Salt water is 15% more bouyant than sweet (Pure freshwater) So adding the saltwater factor gives you 303 pounds of bouancy. So I would say YES the 190# can be supported in saltwater by 141 liter 9'8"

It works for me

Hey,

The reason they are the same (displacements not a factor I worry about in SUP) is They are dimensionally the same but They ARE different boards

Tiki is a                                                     The Pocket Rocket
2+1 set up                                                QUAD FIN SETUP
Slightly flatter rocker                                MOre Tail rocker
Softer rails                                                Sharper rails in the tail
Comes in only AST "startouch"                 Comes in Tufskin (blue or BLK Camo)
                                                                                Sportech (WOOD)
                                                                                Technora ULTRALIGHT
** If you want the Pocket Rocket in AST go with the Tiki it cariies the same warranty as all starboards (a LOT MORE than other SUP mfg's) but you are gonna have to live with it in 2+1 or a pure Thruster set up for tighter turns***

Hope this helps If you want more check out Starboards Forum on their website

What is wrong with POPE Trisect (I don't own or sell them) I saw a guy out last winter at Cardiff Reef (Encinitas CA) he was a big guy and it sure looked like it worked to me?

Starboard has 2 Bisect model 11'2 & 9'8" would love to know the shortcoming (from firsthand knowledgable folks) of this concept...Since I have none

Hey,

Just thought I throw in the Jersey take on the "troubled waters" Here in Nj EVERYTHING related to beach/water/wave access is regulated (by cost, beach tags ect..) We have a growing SUP presence at all beaches. We have no reefs or points. Most of the consistent breaks are around (or better said ON TOP OF) jettys & Piers. I surfed for manny years at Cardif Reef in Encinitas and the area is HUGE in comparison and mellower. I too have a son (21 yrs old) who live to shortboard but SUP's with dad more than he wants to admit.

The New Jersey Scene in breif
Congested Breaks
Short Beachbreak wave
Limited by the towns to places and times to surf
Lots of beginners
No wave days happen regularly

What is REALLY going on

First our press (AC PRESS, Phila Inquire, Local news shows ect) have done an EXCELLENT JOB portraying the TRUTH about this amazing sport

As the local retailer (I sell TONS of SUP's thru windsurfers & Inland enthusiasts and a few cross over surfers..Local surf shops aren't really embracing SUP's they have them but...) I educate my customers first on flatwater (Right at our shop on Lakes bay (In Atlantic City NJ) Then I direct them to non congested spots (smaller waves not as good form) but offer other opportunities to enjoy their SUP (windsurfing, fishing Flatwater touring ect...) as their interest grows we (myself & my staff) offer to take them out at the more "Consistent" breaks. NOT on the "day of the year" type conditions but on everyday conditions we show them the ropes from Parking to take off spots n the water. Over time they (newer SUPers) paddle around catch a few waves get comfortable (in non epic conditions) all this while the "shortboard crowd" is at home waiting for waves! "The Sweepers" (what a lame nickname) are paying their Dues"...so to speak. So when the "Classic" days come we are all out their at various breaks and IF (That is a BIG IF they can get out remember we are talking about beach breaks) The new SUP riders come to us and we give them ideas about how not to get in the way, but still catch some wave and enjoy.

I GOTTA SAY I NEVER ADVISE ANYONE EVER TO RIDE AN SUP IN THE SURF WITHOUT A LEASH THAT IS JUST STUPID AND DANGEROUS FOR ALL CONCERNED!

As SUP's are getting more popular/numerous we are offering FREE SUP Clinics/Demo all over our local area 2009 Spring /Summer & Fall To do the above for more folks that it would be harder to reach on our older more personal method

So in short the key to being accepted is proper indoctrination of our beginners. We as SUP riders (experienced) need to support the retailers who are actively growing the sport responsibly, as opposed to just web or mail order type operations that put more uneducated, mostly not properly equiped folks out there just to make a buck. And also as "experienced" SUP riders refer those interested to the shops that not only will get them a GREAT price but have the ability to educate the newbie so this GREAT Sport can grow responsibly

Sorry for the Ad like tone but I know it works for the good of the sport. What we do as a shop those priciples can be applied on a more personal note by every SUP'er out there.
