I'm a big guy 6'2 275#

In your case I would choose one of these three in no particular order

Pau Hana EZ Rider (11' X 30 Concave deck for balance)
Naish 11'6" NALU Nice balanced board Not the best wave rider as tail thk is a bit bulky but that adds stability
Fanatic FLY 11' Not to heavy, nice flow of volume does everything well

All these boards are main stream and can be purchased at a reasonable price

Let me know if I can be of any further help Just remember boards work different for folks over 190# It is hard to get a handle on this reading websites

Once I get the NJ State Stand Up Paddleboard Champs website up dated I'll get that on the Event list here too!

Artical is nice kinda what we all know BUT....

The comments pro & con are kinda scary...We all need to learn to get along and since we are the "new" comers it is our obligation to fit in ... or we'll get legislated OUT

that is the American way I'm sad to say

Gear Talk / Re: Fanatic Fly 11'
« on: June 21, 2010, 08:41:46 AM »
We've been using the Fanatic Fly's ALOT this year and have REALLY been impressed with their performance. flatwater they are smooth with GREAT glide (the 11Ft being the best here) In the Surf paddling the 10Ft and the 10's are the best stable but nimble good speed down the line. VERY predictable/controlable on the wave face.

as far as sailing Yes all the models sail very well but planning is a relative term. Will any of these boards replace your freeride windsurfing board in early planning or top end speed NO! They weren't design to. The fanatic Fly SUP was meant just to sail here and back planes about as well as the original windsurfer but turnier and probably a hair faster. What it does do (AND DOES IT VERY WELL) is lightwind wave sailing (like we have here on the EC most summer days) 10 to 15mph waves 1 to 3 foot. take any sail size from 4.5 to 7.5 (favoring the smaller sizes) "Bop out" over/through the waves jibe around and catch one back in THE FLY IS GREAT on the wave face. Best of all once you are inside and have to get back up wind the FLY takes you there "no muss No fuss" and definitely no "WALK OF SHAME" (coming in and walking back up wind.
I could go on and on but this should give you a good idea if you want ideas on how to Tweak the Fly's performance it is probably best you contact me directly through personal messager or email karabaszJP@aol.com

Gear Talk / Re: Which board? A distance model that can surf...
« on: June 08, 2010, 08:14:01 PM »
In the realm of more manageable boards (non flatwater race boards) I'm using the New Pau Hana EZ Rider (11FT X 30" wide) tracks great but still fun in waves/swells More of an all around board with GREAT glide. rather than a specific race board.

I'm using it in our first Naish Event this Sunday (June 13th) The Donny Paddle (benefits the Donny Fund for children with catasrophic injuries not cover by insurence) Hosted by the Pleasantville Yacht Club (NJ) Great event, T-shirt and the BEST after race brunch EVER!

if you want more details feel free to contact me directly

I'm a BIG guy (6'2" 275#) here on the EC I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my SoCo Turtle. I've progressed (took me 4 yrs) to ridding it as a QUAD and it is definitely the right call here for me.

Other boards I like
Naish Mana 10' (I even have fun on the 10'5 in smaller surf)
Pau Hana Big EZ

remember the PADDLE really makes it turn sharper. If you wanna ride it like a long board maybe narrower will work better.

Sorry don't have any pictures having to much fun ridding

I gott agree with the crew here the 10ft Mana is an excellent choice. But in your case in the UK it is worth looking into the Fanatic Fly 10ft an more conventional dimensions. I love the wood construction light and responsive We know mushy waves here on the EC

Since you'll be dealing with a MFG or Distributor (not buying them retail) and durability, Performance and a reliable product and support are key factors when setting up a rental biz.

We have found (after 4 yrs of doing that) that

Fanatic, Naish have the right products, prices and support. There are probably others to so I don't want you to think these are the ONLY boards. If you want their telephone numbers email or PM me here as I don't think it is right to post that info on a public forum

Just so we are clear I'm NOT a rep, or MFG. I'm just telling you what works for us after 4 years in the Rental, Lesson biz.

And YES YOU SHOULD GET INTO THE RENTAL BUSINESS...the more the better to grow the sport

Gear Talk / Re: Windsurf board as beginner's StandUp board
« on: May 15, 2010, 07:39:34 PM »
Sounds like it might work but remember she has to turn around (to come home) not exactly a windsurfer as a paddleboard.

All I can say is EVERYONE who tried this around our way bought a real SUP within a month...not sure a COSTCO board qualifies as a real SUP but what ever.

IMHO Women are more sensitive to equipment than we/they think Starting off right might be the best call but if you can limit her "Expectations" $30 is easy to kick to the curb when you buy her a new one
