Gear Talk / Re: 14 Bark to 18.6 Bark
« on: October 21, 2010, 09:07:27 PM »
I need your opinion on a board switch. I have a 14 Bark Dominator and I love the board but I'm having trouble keeping up with my son on his 12.6. "Flat or open ocean." I'm looking at a 18.6 Carbon Bark, 27" wide. In your opinion will this help close the gap just a little. I'm 6-0 210.  I just want to keep him close.  Thanks for your opinions

The gear may be the problem not the board. Instead of taking alot of forum time please feel free to call me at the fin factory and I can share some ideas to increase your speed. 310-530-1383 look forward to hearing from you. Mahalo,Larry

The Ninja from the 80's in this pic. The main reason for the extreme rake was because I had problems with Eal Grass in Corpus Christi Texas while doing some windsurf trade shows there and alot of guys also in So Padre Islands. Thanks for sharing some cool pics of Curtis Fins Easy Rider. Mahalo, Larry

I paddle on an urban river that has a lot of floating weeds and now leaves.  I have to stop every mile or so to back up and clear the weeds I've collected.  I am losing more than 1/2mph from the drag.  I am looking for a really good weedless fin for a Starboard K15.

The John Becker race Keel is the fin of Choice for the K-15 users all over the world. This fin not only is great for seaweed conditions but is the number one fin of choice by Allison Race Fin users to increase their strokes per side. Check out more reviews on this fin and others by going to www.standupfinsbylarryallison.blogspot.com or join use on Facebook Sup Race Fins (Allison Race Fins).

Cjv141, Thought I would share another type of weed fin called the Ninja which came from the Ninja of 1987 in the windsurfing world. The difference is the foil in the Ninja Sup than the Ninja Windsurf. Alot of windsurfers laughed at me then with this fin because they said the extreme rake caused you to loose your pointing advantage. By having the large bottom end taking away the side flex from guys running a short core lenght from base to tip I proved them wrong and now again in the SUP market. The Ninga is great for downwind and light conditions and easier turning, where the Becker Keel is the best for over powered situation and going straight.
Thanks levity and Worlsup for sharing your experience with the Becker. Thanks pdxmike for the more than kind words, it makes it worth while dealing with the drama of competition when I get comments like yours. Mahalo, Larry

cjv141, Thought I would share alittle history to the Becker Race keel. In this pic is a lifeguard fin I made in 1973 as a teenager for Control Products who supplied all the Santa Monica Lifeguards with Boards and fins. This guy came by my factory in 1999 with his prone board doing the BARK, ROCK TO ROCK. Which is when this pic was taken. Later in 2003 guys started using this type of fin for the Catalina Prone Race then I started playing with different keel designs coming into standup in 2006 to 2007 when guys were making fun of me until the first BOP which is when things started to change to now. Alittle Race history on the keel design thru the years and back again. I am blessed to witness history repeat it's self and still be involved. Enjoy the ride my friend. Mahalo, Larry

Which fin?
I paddle around Torrance Beach and PV, so must contend with some kelp. I also like to catch a few waves (The Aves, Cove).  Which fin on my 14' Bark Expedition would work well for me?

The Becker Race Keel is the fin that fits your request on the 14 ft Bark like in the pic below. Mahalo,Larry

Hey, Hope all had a great Labor Day weekend. Summer is over for the tourists, but it's just getting started for us locals out here! I had my ohana 14 out over the weekend and snapped the tip off my FGF Ninja fin. I am looking to replace it with a Curtis siren or a square tip maybe . Can anyone give me some feed back on these fins or a fin of their preference for the above board. Thanks .

Sorry you snapped the tip off your Ninja. Did you hit something? I would be happy to give you a Deal on a Becker Race Keel or Jim Terrell Stealth with fuller tips. Mahalo, Larry

Thanks for sending it downunder Larry, I'll let you know how it goes.  I'm sure it will track great & just what I need for my K15.

Thanks my friend, beautiful Oz. Looking forward to review. Enjoy the ride. Mahalo,Larry

Any retailers out there have these fins?  Or do they have to be ordered?

Both the JT Stealth design and the JB keel design seem like great additions?

Gear Talk / Re: a custom Keel fin for the K15
« on: August 17, 2010, 11:44:10 AM »
... Some of the K15's have a short fin box, looks like 7" is max length.
Ralph’s right – the fin box opening on the my ’09 Starboard K15 is only 7” and won’t accommodate many fins.

“Probox” Larry Allison of Fibre Glas Fin Co. (http://standupfinsbylarryallison.blogspot.com/) now has a version of his Keel fin with a custom base to fit the short slot.  It’s ~8.25” tall and has a total sweep of ~14”.  Compared to the narrow, vertical stock fin the Keel should help with tracking and snag less kelp – I’ll let ya know.

I am interested in trying these fins but can't figure out where to buy one.  Any help appreciated.

Hi Juan, Where are you located? Would be happy to help you out. Mahalo, Larry

Try a Larry Allison SUP Race Keel

I have that "John Becker" Race Keel on my Expedition and like it better than the 10" Futures Weed Fin I was using. It tracks very well in flat and swell and the width helps keep the board from swinging in the cross chop.

When I picked the fin up from Larry we had a discussion on bamboo fins.  Both him and John Becker agree that bamboo makes a poor race fin.  The bamboo adds positive buoyancy inthe tail and that the weight of the fiberglass fin helps offset the buoyancy of the board.  He then added about 1/2 hour of fin discussion that I have no hope in really understanding.  He really likes to talk fins. :)  Larry is a great guy to talk to if you have any questions.  You can call the shop and he'll probably be answering.

Thanks H20man for the kind words. Wanted to say Chucks fin by Rainbow are beautiful fins and I can understand why Chuck and Rainbow use Bamboo for the ECO purpose of things. I am guilty of the same thing a few years back as you can see on my SUP Blog. But had a hard time in paddling with the Bamboo Fin not really knowing why until understanding the feeling I was having was because of the postive Buoyancy in the fin construction. Chuck is a powerful and great paddler so he may like the feel of the Bamboo. Don't want people to take my comment to H20 wrong and not negative to the Chuck Patterson Rainbow Fin. I spend alot of time with fins and manufacturing them for almost 40 years, so I want my customers and new friends to experinence fun and enjoyment in their SUP experinece like levity has. So please don't take the comment about Chucks fin bad, but just a experinece from one guy to another. JOHN BECKER has nothing to do with my comment and experience with BAMBOO. JOHN sells CHUCK'S BAMBOO RACING FINS and RAINBOW'S FINS right next to his own fins at BLUELINE in SANTA BARBARA, because we all share different experiences.  If you are feeling the same thing and my comment has helped you improve your paddling experinence then your hard earned money was well spent. In closing on the positive buoyancy factor with fins think about this. How many sail boats have a positive buoyancy keel? Don't forget you are riding a Standup Board that is up to 4.50 inches and thicker not a surfboard. Thanks again for all the positive support from everyone. Mahalo,Larry
