Gear Talk / Re: Infinity New Deal 10x27"
« on: February 05, 2019, 12:10:32 PM »

The New Deal came today.  I live in Tennessee so it will probably be at least a couple of months before I get to try it out.   I took it out for a paddle on flat water today and it felt plenty stable (on flat water anyway...) and tracks great compared to any other "surf" SUPs i've paddled.   I went 2 miles in about 28 minutes without working very hard so if I can't surf it then at least I'll have a (slow and expensive) flat water cruiser.

I went ahead and ordered one (think I might have gotten the last New Deal as it now says "sold out").   I'm a little worried about the 27" width.  I'm an intermediate surfer but do a lot of paddling on a 23" Whiplash with no problems.  My current board is a Fanatic Allwave 7'11"x31" (110L) so it will be a big drop in width but I want to try something longer and skinnier in the surf (mostly small east coast waves in the spring/summer for me...).   I weigh 140#  so it should be plenty of volume for me and maybe (along with being long and skinny) make it easier to paddle into really small waves (the Allwave catches them pretty well anyway).   I'm excited to try it out.

SUP General / Re: Suburban or Excursion XL?
« on: August 04, 2015, 01:30:58 PM »
I have a 2015 Yukon XL with a Thule rack attached to the factory rails.   The rear lift gate extends high above the roofline when opening and the factory rails are positioned far back on the roof which limits the ability to open rear gate or rear window with race boards on the rack.
I have a rack from my 08 Tundra which attaches further forward and allows the liftgate to open with a 12'6" board.   I made several long trips (to the Carolina Cup, Florida Cup races from Tennessee) with multiple boards on the rack and no problems.   Then I hit a turkey that flew in front of me while going about 75 mph on the interstate  with 3 race boards on the rack.    It hit right between my windshield and the boards and pulled the front bar/rack off of my roof.  (what are the odds? right?)  The boards were OK other than the feathers and bird blood all over them but I am reluctant to continue using the bar that wasn't specifically designed for my roof.  So I am back to using the factory rails and being careful not to open the lift gate very far when boards are on the roof.
Factory rack:

Watch out for turkeys!

Gear Talk / Re: SUP Rack for Garage
« on: March 27, 2015, 04:09:41 AM »

Got the wall rack and rolling rack from T-raxsurf.com.
Not cheap but they are well-made.

This is amazing. A completely clear wall in your garage!

I would immediately find something to put there on either sides of those boards. Probably some paint buckets, one of those towers for cats, and a shelf full of interior decoration stuff (my wife's contribution). The corner would hold a pile of brooms, oars, paddles, bats (whiffle and aluminum), golf clubs, fishing rods and a couple of pool noodles.

We just moved in. I was planning to put in baseboards before I junk it up but couldnt resist going ahead and installing the board rack.   This one is the basement.   I am pretty much a hoarder.   The garage upstairs is so full of bikes, kayaks, snowboards, fishing and golf stuff that I can't fit a car in it.

Technique / Re: Upright v Bent Over Paddling
« on: October 06, 2013, 08:14:43 AM »
I have been with the same issue (upright vs bent over) this summer.   A friend that I race with just gave me some good insight into it.   He showed me a picture of Jim Terrell in a sprint with his torso bent way over (90 degrees at the hips).   He explained that this allows a great deal of weight transfer to the paddle but requires more effort and can't be sustained for long distances.
He bent way over and showed me his sprint position, straightened up a little to show me his position for a 4 mile race, then a little more upright for a 6-8 miler.   For the upcoming Chattajack (30 miles) he says he will (like upwinder described) use an upright stance with more hip and torso rotation and less bend.
Does this mean I am going to have to have different paddle lengths for different race distances? (i guess thats a subject for another post)

I think this is my first post but I have been following the forum for a while and love it!
