Here's an old 3 part video on how to make wood or bamboo fins.

Same technique for fiberglass fins.

Also, for home made centerfins use the http://greenlightsurfsupply.com/products/universal-fin-tab to simplify the build and make it stronger.

The Shape Shack / Stringerless 10'6" Flatwater Glassing Questions
« on: April 01, 2011, 04:49:36 AM »
Hi All,

Just got a 1.5# density stringerless SUP blank for myself and want to make a nice 10'6" flatwater paddler for summertime workouts.

My question is, what is the preferred glassing schedule for a stringerless SUP? I've read posts more geared towards shorter wave riding SUPs that are glassed to maintain the flex but I assume the flat water boards should rigid...

Also, I have 50" wide 6oz. cloth. Should I bring the laps further into the deck to add rigidity?

Thanks in advance,

~Brian

The Thresher fin is also a single or Dagger combo with a more upright plan shape for quick pivot turning action with alittle twist off the tip. This fin works in a wider range of tail designs, wide and narrow.

This Ninja Fin is used in the rear on single fin SUPs or can be used with a Dagger up front combo. This fin plan shape is designed to work in boards with the center box further up in the range of 13" or more for easy turning abilty and hold.

ProBox Larry asked me to post some new SUP fins for him since he is not on this forum:

Hi Guys, Thought I would share some new SUP fin designs I have been working on for the past few months. The pics are of the Thresher and Ninja rear fins with a Dagger fin for open ocean and lakes. These fins are designed to fit a standard center fin box( HI-Surf Center Box is made by Fibre Glas Fin) with approx. 4" of forward and back adjustment on 9'6" SUP'S and up.The Dagger fin for 10'6" SUP'S and up. Please feel free to ask any questions. Mahalo,Larry

Very nice Daniel!

The bamboo layups look really cool.

If you want to put some curve in the blades you can steam the bamboo and clamp it over a form to set the shape.

Then glass it...

Bonjour Daniel!

Excellent board! Nice veneer work. Very classy looking.

Good idea to tint the final lamination layer if you want a bright white look since the bamboo fiberglass has a slightly natural tan color.

Keep up the good work!

Hey Yohan,
Thanks for the compliment. Wish I had more time to make SUPs. I think they are a lot of fun because you can get into a rhythm doing real long rail bands. Like going for a stroll in the park  :)
Yes, we sell the bamboo veneers. Feel free to email us for specs and pricing.
You'll get 2 laminations per bamboo cloth piece at 33" wide. The bamboo comes 60" wide and stretches about 125% of it's original dimensions so you can get a nice lap over a thick SUP rail...
No other material comes close to the workability of the bamboo cloth. It is an isotropic material so it can conform to any compound curve easily. No need to cut "V" notches like fiberglass.
The effective bamboo weight is 5 oz, but it does absorb epoxy resin due to it being a natural fibre. Resin absorption is controlled by your squeegee technique to minimize excess waste and weight.

Hi,

Here's a pic of a 10'6" x 28" SUP laminated with bamboo fiberglass. Black tint on the bottom lam. Bamboo veneer deck.
Enjoy!
