Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / Re: Weird problem at Ka'a
« on: December 12, 2022, 11:29:31 AM »
Today was challenging at Ka'a for a very weird reason. The wind was a bit light and looked to be dying, so I screwed around talking to friends but finally decided I had to pull up my big boy pants and go.

I'd forgotten the golden rule of Ka'a. The wind you feel twenty feet uphill by the parking lot is not the wind on the water. I convinced myself a 4M wing was big enough but fudged by mounting a huge 1150 axis front wing so I could pump up no matter what. Wrong. I could barely get the thing off the water, and every lull took me off foil. I came straight back in planning to pump up my 7.0, but as I dug for it I found the brand new 5.5 F-one Strike I bought a week ago. So I pumped that up and went out. Perfect. Except the handles felt really slippery like they were covered with dish soap. So soapy that it covered my hands and I was falling all over the place trying to get on the board. I couldn't hold onto the rail.

I finally managed to get up and fly out, but the slippery handles kept bugging me. I suck bad enough as it is, I don't need extra challenges. I had a nice time no matter what, and when I felt the wind starting to die I came in. Just as soon as I opened the plug on my 5.5 the wind picked up.

Somebody up there hates me.
Bill funny had my first go on my 6m CWC week or so ago same thing the F1 handles are slimy out of the bag few wraps of hockey tape around the handles way to go actually really helps out down the line little sticky after using for awhile, did it on my 8m CWC while back too and few other wings as well. the hockey tape solves this issue and makes handles better tacky like on transition grabs.

Maiden voyage on 1099 today couple of observations being 225lbs dry definitely needs a little adjustment period to get used too for me coming off my HPS 1050,no way your going to get it wired in 30min session takes a getting used too. It’s fast for sure not sure exactly how much much faster than my 1050 with my 425 P rear but definitely a clip faster. For bigger riders it likes a nice Boeing 787 runway approach for takeoff building board speed then wing pump when speed is right timing,it does not like a jumpy pumpy technique for heavier riders for liftoff just nice steady building speed 787 runway technique.paired today with a 425P rear it hauls ass in a good manageable way felt nicely in control little twitchy at first 1/2 hr but then you settle into it,seems little slidy and perhaps for me the 420 HA rear might give it a little more bite which I’m going to try next round. Waves were small waist high on sets and got a few nice waves and felt pretty confident for first go the glide is definitely a step ahead of my 1050 which it should be for plus 10 AR it likes to be be pumped on turns/transition really comes alive wind was up and down 13-15 avg mph G 20.Overall pretty stoked on first go on the 1099 looking forward to more time in the saddle with her to really check its full potential,I would venture to say preliminarily  that in unruly choppy conditions  probably be better suited on my 1050/980 HPS but cleaner conditions the 1099 speed and glide is addictive, but this could change after more water time

Like to hear how the handles are hopefully improved as had a V1 swing 6m and the handles if you call them that were definitely the weakest flimsiest handles I've ever used winging didnt like them at all and rear handle placement was to far forward for my 225lbs.Must say the 8m looks looks interesting but question is hows the handles on the big rig any picts reports

Beasho good call you won’t regret getting Axis so many options for winging and Supfoiling great foils.Never tried the 999 yet winging but very happy with 980 and 1050 HPS winging at the moment here in NE Brasil. One suggestion I can make for supfoil is the 890 BSC wing just a amazing wing I’m 225 lbs so maybe you might go next step down on BSC series but if you get a chance try one on the Supfoil🙌and you can use it winging on windier days too boot.In good wave energy think the BSC handle better than HA wings horses for coarses of course

I'm looking forward to surfing in Maui. I guess I could take a trip to the coast here in Oregon, but it's a long drive. I think my gotos will be 999, 860 and 1150 though I'll certainly take the 1000 as well. And the 890. Oh hell, I'll just take them all. I do think that 999 is going to be great in the surf. We'll see.
Bill in waves supfoiling definitely consider the 890 BSC wing I had another good test on it today in chest to occasional head high waves and got to say I’m a real believer in the 890 supfoiling just a phenomenal wing even for a heavy weight! Can’t wait for a winging session on it but probably need 20-22 kts for it. Just a kickass supfoil wing with my 440 rear short black fuse.hopefully be some left over swell tomorrow can’t get enough of the 890 beyond stoked on it!

Finally got to try my new 890BSC supfoiling today and first impression is it very nice for supfoil indeed even for a big guy!Tried it with my 440 rear and black short fuse definitely bit faster than my old 860/820 which helps the pump factor glide and very smooth predictable carvability, pretty friggin stoked on the 890 today thought it might be a tad to fast for supfoiling but really liked it for first day session can’t wait to try it again and sure it will be a good higher wind winging foil wing too very similar specs to the 860 which initially caught my eye and my liking of my 1060 BSC wing winging, also Califoilia’s review was a player too on another thread somewhere, certainly glad I got it now reinforcing my liking of the BSC series wings

6.2m Score arrived today from Live2Kite. Is everyone ok with folding the windows?
From the Ensis sight "The ENSIS window material can be packed into a small bag without compromising its performance, integrity or durability."
Can anyone who has the new Score 6.2 next time you pump it up measure outside wingtip to wingtip and center strut cord length so I can see how it stacks up with my old V2 6.0 which was essentially a 6.2 or more be curious if any changes were made as didn’t particularly like my old 6.0 V2 hoping they made some modifications as my V2 5.2-4.5-3.5 were great wings, like to get another 6m wing as a heavier rider, but gotta say my old 5.2 V2 has some pretty good low end for a 5.2!thanks

Today had my first go on my new 980 HPS wind was avg 16-17 kts highs 22kts,not much swell / waves perfect conditions for testing the 980 out and got to say really liked it in those conditions.I have never been a big fan of HA wings as did not really like my old 1150,but the 980 is a big improvement for sure. After enjoying the speed of the 980 especially on a flat day and being a HW rider 225lbs was wondering if the 1050 HPS would be a good choice for lighter days to bring low end down a couple kts  is it worth getting a 1050 or not much low end improvement to the 980 to make it worth it? My go to daily driver is my trusty 1060 love it but the added speed of the 980 on flat days is pretty addictive had a blast on it today really fun albeit in nice wind speeds so inquiring with the crew here if the 1050 might be a good addition to my 980 in lighter days or not much difference? The 980 really surprised me in its handling for a HA wing nicely behaved good speed and good maneuverability, however for a big guy need 17-18 kts+ to get to it’s sweet spot. One thing I noticed about the 980 is it likes a runway approach of gaining board speed to takeoff on foil as opposed to my 1060 which likes to be pumped more, kinda like that little different style approach, also interested if the 1050 handles nicely like the 980.

Be interested if one of you guys has the 6m and check wingspan and center strut cord as my old since sold V2 6m had a 11’1”wingtip span  X 96” cord on center strut which is why I sold it too wide span, all my other Ensis 5.2- 4.5 -3.5 all hit the mark great wings especially for a big guy, still riding them to this day. Funny was passing through Miami today from NE Brasil back to Calif 26 hr long haul and noticed pretty stormy this morning pretty wet on the tarmac and some nice caps when taking off heading out west wish coulda joined you guys haha, good thread here like to hear more about the score looking to replace my old 6m V2 if it was fixed and my beloved 5.2 which has mega hours on it getting a bit tattered ready for a new one like to hear more thanks

I just got my new scores so I'll get a review soon. I'm getting wind this week.
I’d be interested in this as well especially the 6m score as hoping the new 6m wingtips/span are pulled in a bit as that was my only complaint of all my Ensis V2 great wings,oh and the handle blowing out of seam up front too hope this was addressed as well on the scores but interested how the Lowend stacks up with new Fone CWC

Thanks Cali nice comparison should be interesting.Sounds like edge will go to the 890 in the winging dept for sure.Always good to try new stuff pretty happy with my other BSC wings winging so this will be my first BSC wing with black fuse looking forward to trying it out.Maybe for supfoiling can always slow it down tad in waves with slower rear say 440 vs 420 my usual rear wing if it seems to fast, hopefully it will hold good on cutbacks not breaching too easy as I like to lay my 225lbs into nice round cutties on my 860 it’s great for that.Think it will be a good dual purpose wing,I will have to get a smaller fuse down the line as starting in black fuse with short as that’s what I’ve been using for last year on Axis, but certainly got me thinking that’s next! Never ends endless quest for foil nirvana more $$

I was curious, what front foil were you running before? Was the 890 a big size drop for you? I exchanged email with Axis this week because I was looking for a new foil for prone surf and towing. I was looking at either the 860SP or the 890BSC. I went with the 890 because I thought it would be a better "one foil quiver" for what I want to do. Slightly concerned about dropping sizes so much, but I have been on a buddies GL 180 before without issue. The GL180 and 890 have similar specs in the google spreadsheet, and the folks on this board seem to love the black series. Time to see what the hype is about. :-)
You made a great choice IMO. The 890/420/crazy short is my "go to" setup on a sup, for most every day when it's between knee high and head high. Although on a prone board, you may prefer the 380 which I really liked on the sup as well...just found that the 420 really stepped up the pumping game on a bigger board.

Great lift and control for easy entry into the wave, and then once on flying, it hooks up incredibly for super tight and crisp turns, and then it pumps as well as pretty much anything I've been on. Several proners have borrowed it, and I think all but one that I can think of...went out and bought their own.

I'm a big fan of the crazy short fuse in the surf with just about any wing I ride out there, so if you've not tried one yet, you might want to see if you can find one to borrow, and see what you think. Those same guys that rode the 890 and bought it, all but one of them bought the crazy short also.

This is good news just pulled the trigger myself on the 890 BSC to replace my old 860 which is a good wing in its own right for supfoil, and winging high winds, but time for a little change up,should be interesting with black fuse!Im a big fan of the BSC series winging with my 1120 and especially the 1060 so I will be using the 890 for higher winds and daily driver supfoiling.Califoilia by any chance have you tried the 860 was wondering any comparison with the 890 supfoiling? And any other riders out there that might have winged the 860 vs 890 I’m a HW rider 225lb so my old 860 was a great high wind winging wing and a great supfoil wing for me in waist to head high plus surf, just wondering what I might expect from new 890 in both disciplines,Also got the 980 HS coming too for flatter winging days pick up some speed to compliment my 1060 on small surf days as thank it’s going to be hard to beat the 1060 winging in waves, but perhaps the 980 will surprise me,will see

Hi,
I'm running into issues with my 1060 breaching like crazy. I think I just have too much lift in 20-25 kts. I'm 200lbs flying a 5m strike. I was thinking a 1010, 910, or 970 might solve this. Thoughts?

Also if you're thinking of selling one let me know.
Surprised to hear that really, although I'm 25 lbs heavier.Ive been riding my 1060 for months in those similar conditions and rarely have breaching problems with the 1060 unless due to major pilot error on my part it's a very forgiving, stable cruisy highly reliable wing in my opinion, perhaps your rear wing might be a player I'm using a 420 rear perfect with 1060,maybe 380 with your weight might be better and you are probably at those windspeeds in 4m-4.5m territory,I usually ride my 5.2 Ensis or 4.5  in those wind speeds or simply get the BSC 970 and case solved with a 4m wing
