General Discussion / Re: Is anyone just SUP Surfing anymore?
« on: June 14, 2021, 06:48:26 PM »
Not since last summer but since my favorite long board is in the shop I'm going to grab a paddle this week(end)

Your the same dimensions as my wife. The board she landed on was 10'0 or 10'6 x '28 SUP Sports One World. Her balance is not the greatest so she prefers my 10'5" x 32" Starboard Wide Point. Both of these boards are out of production and SUP sports is, I think out of business. The takeaway here is size (dimensions) and utility. Both boards are quite acceptable for flat water paddling and the Wide Point surfs well but it's still like surfing a sidewalk compared to prone surfboard. The One World I've only had in waves once and did well but I didn't have a preference for it, maybe because it was hot pink? If you're only paddling in flat water then a narrower board is called for as PBill mentioned but in surf you'll enjoy the added stability of the extra width.

Take a look through Starboard's website: https://sup.star-board.com/paddle-board/hard-paddle-board/#!/surf

and Surftech: https://surftech.com/sup/

You'll see all of the various flavors there. Don't be afraid to come back here and ask questions.

General Discussion / Re: Politicians are getting crazy

Let me start by saying I do not like politicians. The rest of what I was going to say sounded too much like an anti government rant. I'll just go back to cleaning my guns like to the voices said to.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / At home training ap?
« on: January 20, 2021, 11:49:42 AM »
Hola boyos.

So, just like many of you I've packed on some extra weight during COVID. I used to be in the gym consistently and prone surfing 2-3 times a week. During C19 and finishing my masters at the same time these have dropped off and my fitness level has gone down the tubes. I was never ripped/shredded by any stretch of the imagination but as Damon Wayans said in the great white hype, I'm in shape, I'm round!

I need to do something. I've started walking the dog and have been clocking ~20 miles a week. But that's not enough for the rest of me. The Gyms near me are either closed or require a mask, have an occupancy restriction and increased C19 risk. Together, that makes me uncertain about going into a gym today.

Working out at home is the next option. I'd love to put a weight pile in the back yard but to get it happily stocked I'm looking at spending $2K-ish (did I mention I'm a starving college student?).

That leads me to the home-workout-without-equipment aps. Have any of you used one? Which ones? Thoughts? Feedback?

Gear Talk / Re: Anything out there similar to the Hammer?
« on: August 25, 2020, 08:37:44 PM »
Funny, I still have a 10'5" widepoint and the board that I went to after that was an L41 S4, probably very similar to the one Bill stabbed a foil mount into but mine is 32" wide.  I liked the S4 a lot and not seeing that on the L41 menu anymore I'd give them a call or see who you can beg, borrow or steal a ride from.

We've got similar dimensions (except for my Covid-19#).

Technique / Re: 10 Commandments of Sup Surfing?
« on: July 20, 2020, 10:12:25 AM »
Having foregone the rapture of SUP surfing for the humility of prone surfing I will offer this pentad:

1) You do not need to get *at least* one set wave from every set.
2) Thou shall not shoulder hop.
3) Thou shall not back paddle.
4) Not all breaks are SUP breaks.
5) If someone is on a wave it's your job to stay out of *their* way.

What's passing for acceptable in Huntington Harbor and/or NB back bay these days for PFD versus leashes?

I used to love 91X! Reggae Revolution with Native Wayne!

I consume a lot of AM talk radio (KFI Junkie) usually via "I heart Radio" but otherwise it's podcasts, XM and Spotify

Gear Talk / Re: Help deciding which wetsuit?

1) Go to Frog House
2) try on everything, even Oniels which I've gotten my last 3 from them
3) tell them what you really want and they will find it for you even XXXL's
4) Enjoy a good price, they usually discount their suits as long as it's not this years newest/hottest etc.
5) Smile and enjoy

Hello Gents! I know this is a really well read group and I'm hoping that someone here has a copy of this book. The book is "The Surfers Mind" by Richard Bennett (ISBN:9780975206409). It seems that I can still buy it from Australian sources but getting it to California is a problem. So who's got one they'd like to sell on can ship to CA?

Foil SUP / Re: Dedicated FOIL Section Now on SurferMag Message Board

Nice to see some recognition! As for the erBB, it's the lowest point on the internet. I lurk there from time to time to just to marvel at how low the bar has slid with the half dozen "usual suspects" that have an opinion on everything.

Thinking about what should get recognition on that board for a moment, in terms of growth and the sheer number of participants I'm shocked that there isn't a "Wavestorm" forum. Just think of the possibilities. . . . . #blameCostco
