Here's another nice sphincter pucker, notice the jump at the top of the arc on the opposite wall.  :o

How times have changed. In the early 80's we got hit in Denver with a big one. Local LEOs put out a call for volunteers with 4x4s to get nurses and Docs to work for shift relief. I spent all night out in the CJ5 running folks to work.

SoCal / Re: Good Places to Move too around LA?
« on: February 06, 2013, 09:04:04 PM »
I got good advice when I moved to Ca. years ago. Either live right where you work or right where you play. You don't want to have to drive to both.

I figure since we have to put up with the various socal BS. I might as well cough up the cash and live right at the beach. (I think bicycle distance to the water, MAX)

Welcome to town, you should get a good price on a UHaul into LA. They need units. Everybody here is leaving!  :D

How much rudder movement do you expect?  Degrees from center?

I don't think it will make much difference if you're all bagged up.

Depending on time/distance/temps. If wind is the concern, unless these are custom fit bags, consider skipping the bag during transport. Much less windage. Bags only really help to protect from sun and handling dings. If driving a long way I'd put the nose fwd (more volume, yes. more strength tho) with a slight bias to loading the boards a little rearward on the rack. more tail hanging out than nose.

My .02  YMMV.

That was nuts... seems like they stalled or at least quit moving forward after they made it over the top of the big wave.....probably finding their way back to the cockpit and cleaning their shorts as mentioned before...

Looked like throttled back on purpose, have to balance getting out with not launching yourself into orbit. I've seen others in that position panic and launch straight up. The boat ends up going down butt first like a really expensive spear.

Dumb to get caught in there but got himself out... barely.

Coasties andthe Harbor cops have them here in SD.

Actually, the 42' Near Shore Life Boats in Chatham are the only ones of it's kind in the Coast Guard.  They are specially designed to have a shallow draft and capable of operating in the surf around the Chatham Bar.  They are also jet driven.

I meant they run the SAFE Boat brand/ build. Part of the attraction to SAFE is that they are easy to modify and run a multitude of power and propulsion systems. The basic platform is similar on most.

One of the most clever I've seen is a jet driven model with the controls forward and an open transom. When backing, the stern can be driven under the surface and used as a scoop to retrieve a swmmer. It was developed for rescue in the surf zone.

Cool boats, made by SAFE Boat. The "tubes" are actually closed cell foam, not inflated. Good for rough use in work boats. Coasties andthe Harbor cops have them here in SD.

Try looking at the sailing community. Dinghy racers are very physical and the PFDs are cut with plenty of arm room. They make them kid size too.
Some pretty trick gear. Not always USCG approved but "the Man" won't actually read labels.

Look at brands like Zhik, Gill, Slam, etc. Search dinghy pfd or sailing pfd or bouyancy aid.

SUP General / Re: Happy Birthday Spicoli!
« on: October 10, 2012, 08:39:46 PM »
I wish they'd make a sequel with where a where are they now format. Is Spicoli a millionaire manufacturing surf  gear, or maybe running a surf school in Indo, Judge Reinholt managing an Olive Tree, Robert Romanus still scalping tickets?

I think Spicoli has that surf school, (and growing a little weed in the jungle on the side)

Judge is probably selling cars inland.

Romanus is a bail bondsman.  :D

Story goes, Cameron Crowe, very baby faced at the time, attended Clairemont High for a semester as a senior in '79 to research the book. Only the Principal and one counselor knew he wasn't a student.

Shantaram, very engaging.

The Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brian. Fabulous historical fiction.
