My weekend weather was very much like Chaser's (we live about 10 miles apart on the south shore in MA) but I was trying to juggle some surfing, my wife, 3 daughters & a dog!

Friday night: the lights cut out at 9:00ish with a freakish green explosion (transformer? lightning?).  Then we put the kids to bed and tried to sleep amid the sound of cracking, falling trees.  The snow was just getting heavy at that point.  My house is surrounded by dozens of 30 - 50 ft pine trees and with the heavy, wet snow and 60+mph winds it was quite nerve wracking.  The first one fell without incident but when the second tree fell about 10 ft from the twins' bedroom we moved the kids into the basement.

Saturday it was still snowing like crazy.  We kept feeding the fireplace with little effect.  They had a no-driving curfew until 4:00 PM when the snow started easing up.  My family was going stir crazy so we took a drive to get out of the house (and get warm).  Our town was a disaster -fallen trees and power lines everywhere.  90% of our town was without electricity.  When we saw the third or fourth house with a big tree on it we suddenly got perspective and realized we were lucky.  We hunkered down at a friend's house to drink beer and get the kids out and then returned to a freezing house to spend the night.

Sunday was awesome: blue-bird skies and 40+ temps.  We ate lunch in my friend's snow-covered driveway on beach chairs because it was warmer outside than inside!  My wife even got a sunburn (like you get on the slopes after a big ski day).  The word was out that our kids were off school until Thursday and most of the town was still out of electricity so everyone was still on edge.  Jimmy & I did get out for a quick surf: I mostly wanted to try out the new R4 Patagonia wetsuit that I got from santa.  We went prone in the afternoon and it was absolutely beautiful out.  Waves were C+ -waist to chest but a little too mushy -but we had a good time.  The R4 is an excellent wetsuit.  It was completely dry until a took a few to the face and even then it warmed up quickly.  No problems at all & the water was 38 and air was about the same by the time we got out.  Good times.

Electricity came back on late Monday night.

Thanks for some winter inspiration: already training for a surf trip & the 2013 CCBC!

Around mile 30 we were all zonked and the wind really kicked up.  This pic (from the gopro) gives you a good feeling of what was happening.  We formed 2-3 lines behind the boat to draft off each other.  It was tough sledding but kinda fun with guys bumping into each other like a NASCAR race.

Shawn,
I'm in and I think Chaser & JC will be too.  We will probably do the 6 or 9 miler.  We were already talking about how to implement some post game tailgating into the picture this year.

Ha!  Cool.  Love the GoPro.  Here's one of the kids/nieces/nephews.  Note how I try to be the Martin Scorcese of gopro dudes with the skimboard shot.

Ha!  Awesome.  Here's a GoPro video of the kids & cousins from this summer in VA beach -I was trying out my videographer(?) skills with the GoPro.  It's not exactly tube riding but it's a great way to keep the kids stoked.

Fish Tales, Stand Up style / Re: Fly fishing
« on: December 21, 2011, 06:27:54 AM »
I have to admit that I'm mostly an opportunistic fisherman too.  I go for a paddle, I put the rod on the board and if there are fish, I fish, if not I just do my regular workout.  In the summer the fishing is mostly top water so it's pretty obvious if there are fish.  I find that the additional height of the SUP versus a kayak makes for great sight fishing.  My area has pretty shallow waters so boats tend to spook the fish quickly.  Some days I will out-fish the boats because I can sneak up on a pod of feeding fish without a lot of commotion, other days the fish are popping up all around the bay and the boats will out-maneuver me to the best spots.  We each view the other as a nuisance.
