From what I had read on other sites, Garrett snaked his brother Liam on that wave...  No etiquette issues - it's all in da family.

Great article!  Being a goofyfoot/surfer/snowboarder - Gerry has always been a hero to me.

Thanks for the link.

SUP General / Re: Question for those that still prone surf
« on: January 09, 2008, 11:15:58 AM »
I'm convinced that it definitely helps.

I've been SUP-ing since March 2007 and I really enjoy it but I still prone surf regularly, especially when the waves are good.  It's been impossible for me to give up my surfboards - there are just places on a wave that my 6'1" can go that my 9'8" SUP just can't.

My balance is much improved from SUP.  I feel much more solid on my board and there is very little adjustment that I need to do - unlike going from snowboarding to surfing (front foot vs back foot dominant) or even going from my fish to my normal shortboard.

I've seen pictures of CT pros like Occy and Snake on SUP on smaller days...

I have been a surfer for about 27 years - I mostly ride small boards; my go-to boards are 6'1" quad, 6'2" tri fin, or a 5'9" quad fish.  I have a longboard as well for those really small days.

In the past couple of years, I discovered paddleboarding.  I definitely have an endorphin jones - I paddled outriggers and competed in triathlons so the endurance aspect of paddleboarding appealed to me.  I really enjoy working hard, paddling prone or on my knees, getting fit, and competing against other people.  I loved the long workouts and the solitude you get while paddleboarding.  And as an added bonus, as I got stronger as a paddleboarder, my surfing also improved.

Last year, a good friend from Oahu came into town and was raving about standup paddleboards.  He just got one for Christmas and loved it.  He was convinced that I would really like too.  I had seen them but wasn't really interested but was willing to try it.  So we borrowed a 12'0" Munoz Surftech from Mitch (of Mitch's Surf Shop who was also getting into SUP), tried it, and that was that.  I did love it.

Now my longboard hardly ever leaves my garage.  I am on an extended break from paddling my stock paddleboard.  I just find myself wanting to surf or paddle my standup paddleboard all the time.  I still surf my shortboards quite a bit and have found that doing standup is great training for surfing - I find myself much more solid on my boards.  The workout is amazing; my waist size has dropped from a 36' to a 32'.  I can definitely feed the endorphin rat and get some solitude paddling my standup for exercise and can go cruise somewhere and explore and can surf really fun waves with very few people out - there are endless options.  And I have met some great people from being involved in standup paddling.  I have three standups now and am undoubtedly getting more.  It's a great sport.

SUP General / SUP Rental in Northern California
« on: October 17, 2007, 10:45:09 AM »
Does anyone know of any place to rent some beginner friendly stand up paddleboards in Northern California?  A good friend who I let try my SUP while she was visiting here in San Diego is now eager to try it again up where she lives in the San Francisco area - Santa Cruz to Stinson.

Thanks in advance.

Great show, Scott!

Unreal collection of surfboards.  The Hesses were really cool!  Post-Clark Foam, people are doing some cool things.

Some cool SUPs - Merrick, C4 Waterman (thanks, Brudda Rick), Kenson, Stamps, Hobie, Angulo, House - too.  They were all really cool and I wanted to ride them all!

I am a surfboard junkie and now rapidly becoming a stand up junkie - that was sensory overload for me!  Agreed - would have been cool to see what Hawaiians are doing surfboard and SUP-wise.

Anyway, great job on the show.  It was good.

Can't wait for this show!  I hope I have money left in the bank after, though.

Forgive me for butting in but...
The Szyzmanski maybe a one-off but his site is:

I don't think David Craig has a website but he definitely should!

Awesome!  Sounds like a great session

I was in Cape Cod on a family vacation this summer and looked everywhere to try to rent a stand-up with no luck - we were in the Falmouth area.  With all the waterways everywhere; it seemed like a great place to explore.  Checked out the beaches on the outer Cape; pushed the nephews into a few waves on the a surfboard - all the while jonesing to have my standup.

Great story on the SUP fishing - brings back some great memories...  My brother and I got into some great fishing there - wide open striped bass and blue fish on light tackle (my brother was on a fly rod).  Super fun!

Thanks for the story.

Yeah, I tell the prone surfers at the office on Monday morning it was epic over the weekend. They look at me like I'm nuts.  ;D

Totally agree.  It's been a bad summer for waves here in San Diego but because of my SUP, I have had so much fun anyway.

From the angle of picture #3, the tail has a profile you would see on a prone paddleboard.  Do you know if that board meant for surfing?

Gear Talk / Re: Flat, domed or concave?

Been riding surfboards that are domed - a shaper once mentioned that it was a effective way to "hide" the volume and keep the rails thin to allow for more maneuverability.  Makes sense to me.

Have a SUP with a flatter deck and one with more dome.  I prefer the one with more dome.

That's my 2 cents...

Really cool board!

I've fished off kayaks and longboards - I've always thought that fishing off a SUP would be cool, too.  Great idea to add the outriggers for stability - you could bring beer out with you!

Do you know how the outriggers are attached to the board?

Hey John,

Forgot the camera so no pics.  Will have to go down again and get document it.   :D

Seriously, Dude, your blog inspired me to go because I was pretty concerned...  No doubt there's danger to be found down there but I just reminded myself how killer Baja is.

Hey Tom,

I agree - it's still a calculated risk.  I'm just going to drive during the day and I'm not so sure about camping.  But I just really can't imagine not being able to go down - especially after this trip.

Very cool to turn people on to SUP...  Get any waves?

12' Surftech Munoz.  At the time, I did not think that I would ever get the hang of it.
