SUP General / Re: SUPIA rules and regs.
« on: January 19, 2014, 09:44:42 PM »
Kevin from Canada writing (Race Director of the Kalamalka Classic SUP Festival)...

Thought I'd chime in with our take on the rules and SUPAA's position.  Before getting into SUP, I spent more than 15 years organizing and directing BMX Race events in both the Canada and the USA at the National and Olympic level ... so my background is all about events.

The claim that SUPAA is 'not an organizing' body is indeed confusing as this rule-set is very much what most 'organizations' put in place.  A rulebook defines an organization and SUPAA will have a tough time 'encouraging' race organizers to adopt the rulebook without actually 'sanctioning' the event.  'Sanctioning' is mentioned a number of times and that really and truly means that SUPAA is an organizing sanction. And along with that, comes insurance issues, consistency, etc.

There is no doubt that some formal guidelines should be set in place for events that will have recognized titles (Regional Champs, National Champs, Worlds, etc) but having come from the ultra-regulated Cycling world, (and seeing how picky Kayak/Canoe organizations are as well), I applaud the creativity that our sport affords us right now.  And I think the recreational and intermediate athletes do as well. Perhaps this is more in line for 'Elite' Level only.  Some of the rules in their rulebook are necessary to create a 'fair' platform and safety is always good....  but there are an equal amount of red flags such as Prize Money allocations (that one will always be a tough one to enforce).

Typically, it is the athletes, or a group of like-minded organizers who join together to make a push like this and I recognize the efforts of the athletes who have taken it to task - kudos.  If the intent is to establish a starting point, then they have accomplished this but taking the stance of not choosing to be an organizing body might just have be the next step in SUPAA's evolution.  (and secretly, we'd prefer this over falling under Canoe/Kayak organizations).  If you want to see an example of how to crush the spirit of the sport, USAC in the US and the Canadian Cycling Association just about killed BMX when it was included in the Olympics.  I suspect that SUP might find its way there some day as well.

From what we know (and from the folks who attend), our event is rich with creativity and we make every effort to create a fair racing environment.  It's loose and fun for newbies and recreational athletes and that is what attracts them to the sport.  We ran the first-ever Canadian Championships in 2013 and I can honestly say that I would not have chosen to adopt these rules.  It's still too early and far to overbearing for the average Race Organizer to accomplish.

Perhaps SUPAA can follow this rulebook announcement up with a 'vision' for how these rules will fit in to the current development of the sport - that might help us all join in and be a part of the good cause.   And most importantly, let's leave some room for creativity.
