Random / Re: Should we really wait for "them" to figure this out?
« on: May 01, 2020, 07:11:09 PM »
Here's what we know for sure...30 million people infected with the unemployment "virus" in US. 66,000 deaths from the virus.

I agree with you Clay btw. Not sure if Admin read that article right. The main stream media will only push its own agenda. I like to look at different angles.

Frankly, the herd immunity approach may be the right "compromise" in this situation. Otherwise waiting a year for the vaccine...we'll see. Sweden so far hasn't been wiped out.

The flip side of this is the positive effect on pollution, not only from drop in transportation but now from the meat industry slowdown due to infected workers. Perhaps mother nature prodding humanity to do the work for the environment.

What do you think about requirement to wear a mask on planes now? Imagine wearing one for a 5 hour flight plus 2 hours in airport. What about those 12+ hour trips across the Pacific?

Admin I was looking more into the proportions across various states and a different angle...

1 - 52% of total US deaths so far are in two states NY, NJ (top 2 in deaths)
2 - 73% of total US deaths so far are in seven states NY, NJ, MI, MA, IL, CT, PA (top 7 in deaths) all east of the Mississippi btw.

3 - CA accounts for only 3% of total US deaths.

So is it ok to continue to freeze the rest of the country's economy because of 2 to 7 states?

Can restrictions be relaxed in CA, the worlds fifth largest economy (14% of US GDP) but only 3% of total US deaths?

What about in other states where contagion levels have not been realized. Can restrictions be relaxed?

Is the geography of CA and other western states likely not conducive to the contagion rates in densely populated areas like NY & NJ?

You can argue that the early stay at home orders in CA may have helped. But I counter with the fact that the LA Marathon was run in early March a week before stay at home orders. There were 25,000 runners and 500,000 spectators lined up along the course in close contact with each other, no social distancing then. Yet there was NO BREAKOUT like in NY. Is it because these people were outdoors and exposed to sunlight and UV rays which breaks apart viruses?

Is the governor of CA on a power trip by ordering the beaches to close again despite local officials satisfied with most of the public's adherence to social distancing this past weekend? The hypocrisy is that they allowed the LA Marathon to run right before the lockdown measures. But it's not ok to be at the beach.

So are we going to treat the rest of the country as if they were NY? Or can we figure this out as it fits our local communities?

I found this interesting chart that could help the various "we's" figure out what works for their situations.

What's good for NY is good for Wyoming? Seems like the whole country is paying for NYC once again. Perhaps the capital of capitalism gone amok.

Sessions / Re: Same day Mt Baldy skiing and SUP sessions
« on: May 01, 2020, 09:19:12 AM »
I'm really grateful that I was able to do two of my favorite sports during this crisis. SoCal is really one of the few places on this planet where you can snow ski/board then surf or vice versa within an hour.

I really love Mt Baldy. I wouldn't even bother driving to Mammoth if Baldy got more consistent snow.

I wonder how the recent break in air pollution due to stay at home orders will affect next winter's snowpack.

Sessions / Same day Mt Baldy skiing and SUP sessions
« on: April 28, 2020, 05:52:04 PM »
I got to do a SUP & Ski "biathlon" last Friday 4/24 at Mt Baldy. It was an epic day with no crowds.

They were open for social distanced skiing/snowboarding. They sell reserve lift tickets in golf tee time blocks so only 4 people every 10 minutes can pick up tickets and head up the mountain. Masks were required at the top and bottom of the lifts. They still had a good snowpack. It was soft and sugary, not slushy considering the air temp was mid-60s. Got about 10 runs w/ 10,000 vertical feet total, then headed back home to Santa Monica for a sunset paddle session.

We've been discussing this with one of the efoil DIYers. The goal is to get even grandma on an efoil safely.

The water is closed technically 1,000 yards from the beach. Illegal to cross the sand. Maybe an open ocean paddle from a harbor.

Correction, LA county defines the beach to include 1,000 feet from shoreline. But nothing breaks out that far these days.

LAPD kicked me out of the water last Sunday. Only place to legally launch from is a private beach or slip in one of the harbors.

But what a waste of resource that was to send out two boats. The LG boat was aggressively close to the SUPer. If he would've gotten injured he could've sued. Might have made more sense to have sheriff track him on foot wherever he landed and make the arrest there. The SUPer must have been a real jerk to the LG to elicit sheriff boat response. Or they are all on a power trip.

Random / Re: Beach Closures - COVID-19

LAPD told me to get out of the water on Sunday. In LA county the definition of beach includes 1000 feet from the shoreline. So we can't surf unless waves are breaking 1000 feet from shore. Even then, when you come back in you're not allowed to step on the sandy part of the beach or parking lot.

What bothers me in LA on PCH there are a lot of cyclists out riding less than 6ft from each other and drafting even. Meanwhile we're not allowed to SUP in the ocean  :-\

Random / Re: COVID-19 Data Model Updated Daily
« on: April 01, 2020, 12:55:22 PM »
All this covid-19 forecasting reminds me of how experts try to predict the stock market. The Dow Jones or S&P is gonna peak at (insert number) by (insert date). Dr. Fauci and team may or may not be any better than Jerome Powell and all the so called financial experts at predicting their respective subject matter.

Maybe they should have stock market experts have a go at covid-19 forecasting. Or if Dr. Fauci and team get it right, they should try their hand at the stock market next.

This is what I'm tracking these days since stay at home in CA.

Cool now I can replace the mask I've been surfing with ;D

Even though we were social distancing, LAPD got on the horn and kicked us out of the water.

I took a drive up north LA on PCH to do a surf check on Saturday. Never seen Zuma or Surfrider Malibu empty. OTOH, County Line took the pent up demand. Check out the bikers idea of social distancing...

While the water in LA county beaches had higher than usual bacteria levels a couple of days ago from the storm runoff, our local mountains got dumped with 3 feet of fresh snow. This winter wonderland is only 60 minutes from the beach. Had an epic day of skiing!

Looks like your Starboard is made out of Cardboard!

What year and model is that? Is it one of the "eco" boards? My old 2013 Starboard Pro carbon is still bulletproof.

My first time on a foil ever today. I'm hooked!! Selling all my SUPs for down payment on an efoil  ;)
Rode my friend's efoil and got up on first try. Legs were burning though. Luckily soft crashes so far but not going fast yet.
