SUP General / Re: Why the zone has gone south
« on: August 23, 2018, 07:36:09 AM »
Interesting thread, interesting timing.

This is my first time logging onto the 'zone in prob 3-4yrs.
I used to be addicted.  I had the SUP bug, and loved this forum.  Zone and email, didn't need much else.

I enjoyed the personalities and over time, found the 'Random' area as/more interesting than the SUP content.
Then someone who posts a LOT on here started sending me PM's telling me to piss off (paraphrasing).
'Cause I'm not funny, or adding the right kind of value, or whatever.
That pretty much did it for me; way too busy to re-live 8th grade in an online forum.

I also think the member 'ban' that took place a few years back took away some very interesting contributors.
Anyhoo, Paddle on!

Spookini is correct

That alone is worthy of promotion to Teahupo'o status...

tm'cubed, "all-around" generally refers to the idea "can be paddled casually, also can be surfed".  Not many boards are designed/marketed for river/whitewater.

Been said many times over on this forum, but be sure to set aside at least $200 for a quality paddle.
Most of us would rather paddle a log, than paddle a nice board with an entry-level aluminum stick.
Cheap-o aluminum shaft/resin blade is sure prescription for paddling misery.
If your spouse might be paddling too, ask around for recommendations re: adjustable paddle choices.

I think what's really needed is double leash-plugs.  That's the real debate, and I'm surprised it hasn't been discussed here.

Surg:

Don't worry about PBill.. he's just Grumpy.

The big benefit of an iSUP is not the ability to deflate it.  It's the ability to have a board you don't have to baby.  Throw it to the ground, beach it hard into the local boat ramp, drag it across the ground, then bounce it into your garage.  You can't do that w/ a quality hardboard.

Re-reading your original post, I think your family would appreciate an iSUP.  They're more forgiving balance-wise, and your wife and son would enjoy the soft feel and lack of hard edges.  No dog paw scrapes/scratches, either.

The downside is a quality iSUP is not cheap; no less expensive than a good hardboard, really.
BTW, a lot of the paralysis-by-analysis regarding hardboard shapes is in relation to surfing performance.  If you're not surfing, don't worry about it.

There's a few premium iSUP brands (ULI, Red Paddle), but I think most of the top surf brands (Starboard, Naish, Fanatic) offer similiar quality.
There's a Zoner who's a Fanatic dealer and can get you a good price if you ask around.
Again, I'd stay stick w/ a reputable mainline manufacturer, and skip the Walmart/Amazon route.
For max performance/glide/whatever, hardboard is better; it's your call regarding what your likely usage will be.

My 2 cents:

Go to a surf shop, and ask them to talk up their budget, entry-level offering.
They'll educate you, in the sales process.

Don't buy a roto-molded board from a "sporting goods" shop!
Just like you probably shouldn't buy a mountain bike from Wal-mart...

What do I need to know?

* Hot chicks live over here:  http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,15352.1455.html

* Everyone here is more than happy to recommend the board they currently own, as better than all other boards.

* It's only a matter of time before Area10 chimes in and tells you that your iSUP is a drop-stitch deathwish.

Welcome to the 'Zone!

SUP General / Re: inflatable sup windsurfer? Any good?
« on: June 22, 2016, 07:41:25 PM »
..are they any good?

You gotta define "good".

There's boardsailing, and then there's windsurfing.  Windsurfers will say "meh", unless they are riding the rear fin, at speed.
If you simply want to sail -- and sounds like that's your real goal -- then iwindsup is a lot of fun and great way to learn.

A board with no centerfin is hard to keep upwind, esp if you're a newbie.  Be sure to get an iwindsup that accepts a center fin.
And remember the sailing rig will cost you another $600-1000.

Check out the Fanatic iwindsup, Viper Air (?)

My wife has had her 11' Wind for over a year now. She loves it, is stable, easy to carry,

Great that your spouse is stable, but carrying her around is pretty un-evolved.
Even for us neanderthals who hang out in this forum, in b/w searching for fire.

Think there's been discussion on here that they're great boards, but superficially fragile.. gelcoat cracks or sum-in' like that.  But not structurally fragile.

Contact the company directly, via their website.
They are usually very responsize.  Maybe they'll step up...

iJoe:

iSUPSs definitely have their place, some folks on here love 'em, others hate 'em.
IMO, they're great if you're a newbie, casual paddler, and/or not doing any hi-performance surfing.

That said, the iRocker looks like any other cheap-o iSUP.  The paddle looks like garbage.
There are much better products out there...

There's nothing on their website that seems compelling.
What is "triple military grade"??

I judge the media bullshit that the event generates--as bullshit.

I can't stand the rhetoric of service members who've "lost their lives".  These folks didn't 'lose' their lives, didn't wake up that morning and say, "oh sh*t, where the hell'd I put my life"?

They were sent into harm's way.  Sometimes for a just cause, sometimes for no-so-just causes.  But call it what it is: a sacrifice.  Don't call it losing one's life.

And oh yeah -- long live the HOT CHICKS!
