I basically have this same problem at the moment.  Happened to me about a month ago.  My pain wraps around my leg and is focused in my shin.  Two weeks ago, I couldn't walk to the bathroom and was stuck on the couch for 2 weeks.  Just now improving.  I have been taking Hydrocodone along with CBD oil for the pain.  Still not enough to make it go away.

Had an MRI, I have numerous bulged discs in my lumbar.  Huge ones at the L5-S1 and L4-L5.  If they haven't given you steroids yet, I would recommend trying a Medrol pack.  Basically a course of steroids you take over a week.  The last two times I had this happen, two packs did the trick and I was fine.  This time the pain was worse and the steroids did not solve the problem.  Dr. has recommended an injection this time.

I would recommend the book "The Permanent Pain Cure" by Ming Chew.  He is a PT in NY.  My friend turned me on to him.  At the time, my friend had a bad back and was supposed to get surgery on his rotator cuff.  Ming fixed him up so he didn't need surgery and back is strong as ever now.  The book has a bunch of stretches that I can attest will make your back feel much better.  If you adopt his routine, I believe it is a good maintenance program.  I obviously have not followed it and have consulted it when I have this problem. Going forward I will be doing the stretches and other recommendations on a daily basis.

The book has information on supplements to take.  He recommends taking systemic enzymes to get rid of scar tissue and inflammation.  I have been taking them and my back is now getting better.  Another recommendation is to drink lots of water like 2-3 quarts a day.  One theory is that if the discs get dehydrated they shrink and it makes it easier for them to slip out of place.

Someone else that was having a similar problem recommended taking something called palmitoylethanolamide or P.E.A.  You can check a site called www.peacure.com for this supplement.  Studies show that it reduces inflammation and pain after about a week.  I haven't tried this, but I am going to order some and give it a try.  Not too many sources to purchase this product and some of it is made in China.  The site I referenced produces the supplement in the Netherlands.

If you want to go the psychological route for the cause of your pain, you can get the book Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection by John Sarno.  I know lot of people swear by the information in this book.  I think his theory is repressed anger and emotions (stress) physically manifest into back pain.

Any who that is my 2 cents.

I wouldn't recommend a Hammer if you are looking for a performance shape.  I'm 6'4", 225.  I had the 8'5" x 31, about 140 liters (can't remember exact dims).  For 140 liters and its wide nose and tail shape, I didn't find it to be very stable.  Definitely not as stable as I would have expected.  In addition, it has massively bulbous rails that like to dig if pushed too hard.  If you went 9'5" you would have one massive board and even less performance.

I have a 9'6" x 31 JP Surf, 146L.  Much more stable than the Hammer and surfs circles around it even though it is a foot longer.  Much more durable in my experience owning both boards.

Gear Talk / Re: Stripped FCS Screw

From the Futures Website

How do you fix a stripped screw?
Step 1: Clean the box in question with a little fresh water to remove any sand or grit and make sure the screw hole and work area are clean and dry.

Step 2: When dry, use masking tape to cover the screw hole on the inside cavity of the box so the resin doesn't run out the bottom of the hole.

Step 3: Prepare the epoxy by following the instructions on the back of the package. Fill the screw hole with Five Minute epoxy. NOTE: Leave a little void at the top of the screw hole, to allow the drill to be started easier. Allow the epoxy to dry for a few hours.

Step 4: Use the #21 drill bit to drill a hole through the epoxy following angle of the original screw hole.

Step 5: Now use the 10-24 tap to re-tap the drilled hole following the angle of the original screw hole.

Step 6: Screw in the screw and check for tightness, then go for a surf!

Ive never known Futures to be 10-32.  Maybe used in offshore china special boards.  Ive used future screws in FCS when i wanted a longer screw.  One fix for the striped thread is to use a longer screw.  Usually your leash has the longer screw that works.

If you purchased the boards with a credit card and it has not been too long, I would dispute the charges for the boards with the credit card company.  Tell the dealer to take the boards back and ship you new boards with proper boxes or just refund your money so you can take your business elsewhere.

Where are you located?

The mosquitoes there are legendary.  I stayed there once in a brick house about 25 years ago.  It was more like being cooked alive in a brick oven.  No AC.

Took the bus from San Diego all the way down.  Over 24 hours.  That was an adventure in and of itself.

Gear Talk / Re: Width vs Length stability ratio?
« on: May 28, 2016, 10:28:12 AM »
Lots of board characteristics affect stability besides length and width.  Shorter length affects stability by cutting down the "sweet spot" so to speak where you can balance.  Case in point.  I have a 9'6" x 31 JP Surf and an 8'5" Sup Sports Hammer that is 31.5" wide I think.  Both about the same volume JP is 146 and the Hammer is 141or 5.  Stability of the two boards is not even in the same ball park.

The JP is hands down far more stable; like a barge compared to the Hammer and surfs about 1000 times better.  The Hammer also has a wider nose and tail by a long shot.  The Hammer has the most bulbous rails I have seen on a board and probably contributes to its inability to right it self once you sink a rail.  The water just holds all that rail and doesn't want to let it back up.  The Hammer at over 31" wide is probably the most unstable board I've ridden.  10' C4 and Jimmy Lewis boards I had that were 28" wide were much more stable than the Hammer.  Proper design in all the parts plays a big part.

I also had a 17' Naish that was 26" wide.  The rails were almost vertical in the middle of the board and it had a narrow nose and tail.  Super stable in the worst of ocean conditions.  Normally at my height and weight 6'4" 230, 28" is about the minimum width I want on a board.  The Naish would only tip over so far and not enough to ever go past the point of no return.

I like quads placed on the rail about 1" off.  Do not like the McKee style setup with the rears placed close to the stringer.  If I want a thruster, I will ride a thruster (preferably 2+1).

Rear fins need to be single foil (flat inside), 80/20 ok also.  50/50 feels like you have the e-brake on the whole time.  I guess this is why people say 50/50 rears have more control and better for the barrel?

Someone remarked that bigger guys (like me) do not tend to like the McKee style or the 50/50 rear fins.  Horses for courses.

What is your opinion Mr. Foote and what placements do you follow?
