Also you can get 3" thick at home depot. I'm fiddling around with a board at 7'6'' x 22" and got it out of 1 sheet. Bill, could you give some guidance on rough sanding? I kind of smoothed mine out to 120 grit to help my eye and hands find my many, many flaws. I can certainly roughen it back up.

Nice board. After some sea trials could you share some feedback? I'm admiring the plan and would like to fear any changes you might consider to either design or build after a few hours. It looks really good man.

I read all the posts here even if I don't think they apply to me. Well eventually they apply. I broke my mast yesterday and will try to repair it like this. Here's the background for accident investigation. It's a 75cm Naish aluminum mast. Somehow I bent it earlier this season. I ordered a replacement but kept the bent one. I got it straightened back out as roughly measured with straight edges and eyeballs. I was using it yesterday and hit something submerged at speed. A glorious wipeout ensued. Then I saw my foil floating no longer attached to the board. Some friendly fishermen assisted me back to shore. The mast broke inside the base right at the screw holes. If I was guessing there was probably significant metal fatigue at that weak point and the impact pushed it over the edge. Here's my question. I didn't see what I hit. I'm guessing my speed was around 15 kts. Would hitting a large freshwater fish be enough impact energy to bust stuff? I didn't see any logs or other debris.

That boomed wing was the first thing I noticed. I want one.

I started with a real throwback. A Mistral Windglider. Basically an inflatable barge. Super stable, cushy and easy. Only used it once to see if I could sail upwind with the wing. I could. Next went to plowing on my 110l board with the foil. I could also stay upwind. Then learn to foil. I found the Windglider on Craigslist. I've only had to patch it three times! I'm planning on teaching my kids with it now.

The Wright Flyer had a curved underwing.

I concur. The baby stepping aft worked wonders. This is the video and method I recommend.

Is your foil kit perfectly balanced at any speed? Meaning, your foot pressure balance is the same at low speed and high speed?
Mine is, and this never happens to me. It’s the only wild idea I can come up with.
I’m real particular about getting this balance/low drag setup spot on. I never have back foot or front pressure at any speed.
Have you or could you post the process to achieve this? I used The KD balance method to start but my tuning seems to be pretty scattershot. Usually I try frowning and some incantations but that doesn't seem real effective.

Seems like a solution is starting to become clear. Thank you.

Good to know. Thanks for the input. The learning process is fun if sometimes befuddling.

Thanks for all your guidance. I have had pretty good success moving the mast fore and aft depending on conditions. Yesterday I had it nearly full aft and I was standing probably 4 inches further foreword as well. It was windy. A 5m would have been great, but I hate a thousand dollar equipment fix if I could be using a more effective technique.

You know that sounds right. I think I have some negative transfer from windsurfing. My brain probably wants to load a fin instead of fly a foil.

I'm on a Naish ha1400. Naish Hover 110. Doutone echo 6m. 195lbs. wind were 15-25 knots.

I am happily foiling along and look ahead and see a gust coming. I would love to take that energy and accelerate but instead I just climb and have to de-power to avoid a breach, shift my chunky butt, and re-power. I understand why this happens, but I just seem to be reacting rather than anticipating. In a similar fashion when I turn downwind to a broad reach and overrun the waves they push me too high as well. I have found that usually an instructor or coach can make a simple corrective statement that clicks with me. Any tips would be appreciated.
