Related to Blockidog's query...my large wing is a 6.4m Slinging V2. I'm 185# naked. One season winging. Wondering whether a 7m CWC will have that much more pull than the 6.4m V2 in light, flukey southern Monterey Bay, CA winds...or, if I'd need the 8m CWC for a real, notable difference and access to the MANY days of 6-14kt swirling winds near the wharf. Perhaps Clay, who once had the V2, would opine...

Yeah I'm also wondering about this given my biggest wing is a 6.2.  There's a definite law of diminishing return with bigger sails, kites, and wings from what I have seen so far.

Finally got this big wing on the water -- 1 to maybe 8 knots, 9 degrees C.  I wanted to test out some cold water gear and also see what the Strike could do in low gusty winds.  At about 5 or 6 knots this thing wakes up, sucks in some caffeine and takes off -- it is a beast!  If you get a lot of low wind gusty days this one is hard to beat!   :)

Nice, what size board and foil are you pairing it with deja vu?

General Discussion / Re: Coanda Strips for iSUPs

Apparently have a sharp-angled tail helps considerably with water release and unsticking the board when trying to get on foil. Fanatic and JP are both including the strips on their new inflatable wingfoil board options. I was thinking it wouldn't hurt to try with my Gong Hipe as it does feel pretty sticky when trying to get it off the water, though this could be just as much its flat base as it is the rounded off tail, causing the issue.  I had a go at making something of an EVA yoga block, but it looks pretty bad so far and I doubt I'll bother mounting it.

General Discussion / Coanda Strips for iSUPs
« on: June 18, 2021, 10:14:15 AM »
Hello,

I am wondering if anyone has seen those strips for sale that are found on higher end iSups to cause waterflow to break away from the tail of the board?  I've seen them come stock on some Starboard iSUPs and some inflatable wingfoil boards, and would like to add them to my own wing, and possibly, iSUP boards.  I have seen some 3D DIY attempts at making them, but I am more interested in something a bit more refined like what is available on stock boards equipped with them.

Thanks in advance!

I suspect the board will work fine.  I taught my self to wingfoil on my Slingy Wizard 125L it was no problem.  I liked it so much I got tracks installed ahead of the Tuttle box to make it even more suitable for winging.  I still use it for windfoiling and light wind winging.

Hey Vancouver foiler, are you being bias?  I know OR is a big deal up that way, just want to make sure you don’t work or ride for them....

Nice user name Supfoo.  I can tell you as a Vancouver kiter/wingfoiler that ORs actually aren't all that popular up here. I see way more Naish and Duotone, North and Airush kites typically.  Head across to Vancouver Island and it's a different story.

I use C but I also windfoil the same board when  it's too light to wingfoil.  I ride strapless so foot placement isn't critical.  If I was just winging I would use B by default.  I have setup A and found I had some front wing wobble on the fuse.

You are brave.  I learned kitefoiling that even in the lightest chop a foilboard will take off downwind unbelievably fast.  Even in the Gorge in light conditions the board will motor upriver/downwind far faster than I could ever hope to swim.  I suppose if you are on a small lake with a low-consequence downwind retrieval it's totally doable.  I would like to do the same as I can't stand the leashes, but it would be game over at any spot where I ride.

I think the big advantage with this wing will be  its relatively narrow leading edge.  Ever ride a kite with a super narrow leading edge then swap to one with a fat LE?  The thin one goes upwind soooo much better, and will jump to the moon, it's not the only factor, but it's an important one.  Ever windfoil with a reduced diameter mast then grab a wing and go for a rip?  The windfoil destroys it upwind, largely in part due to the super narrow LE.

As for OR, my expectations are tempered.  I remember back in 2005 when they released their first also-ran game-changer bow kite, the OR One.  They advertised it's design as having been "locked in the vault" for years (to avoid patent infringement) and they pitched it as a one-kite quiver, to those ignorant enough of the new kite designs to think this was actually a possibility.  Anyways it was a good kite for the time among great kites, but not worthy of all their hype.  To me this looks to be at minimum a good wing, hopefully a great wing, but I don't know if the cost will be justified in performance.  Hopefully the durability of aluula makes it worthwhile, we will see!  :)

Leading-edge diameter is a limiting factor for pointing upwind, the most efficient sails have aerodynamically shaped masts that pivot with the sail. They also use rigid or semi-rigid wings instead of fabric. I expect our hand wings will go through a development stage where the inflated tubes go away for the serious speed fans, with minor changes for the rest of us who are happy to just be flying.

This is the way.  Going from a reduced diameter mast and windfoil sail to a wing with a moderate diameter, the difference is vast. I realize it's not the only factor, other things like luff size and the wing's aspect ratio are important, but a fat leading edge is key as far as I'm concerned. My windfoil setup absolutely climbs upwind compared effortlessly compared to the wings I have flown,  I am planning to start to use a harness when wingfoiling in hopes that this improves things.

The handles look promising, but I've never thought to myself, "Gee Supfool, wouldn't it be nice to have a wing that weighs half as much as my current one, even it costs twice as much?" Nah.  In a kite I can see the benefit where you're swinging it around to generate power lightness helps.  In a relatively static wing I suspect the advantage is less pronounced.  Too bad it's so homely looking, but then again OR has never been known for their aesthetic appeal.

Hard pass on this technique. Where I ride it's sideshore and the wind can shut off instantly leaving only chop that will take the board downwind, never to be seen again.  To me this technique seems foolish at best, and I consider it irrepsonsible to be touting it online as a leash replacement in all but the most specific low swell/chop situations.  I sure don't have $3500 to gamble with every time I go foiling.

13
Lol it's for freestyle, it's meant to look like that.  It's not designed for old guy lawn mowing, it's meant for Jeffrey Spencer backflips.

14
Oh nice they fixed the loop leash attachment.  Imagine using a Lark's head knot for a surfboard or kite leash. Now if only I could find the secret dump valve on the strut of my 5m that they talk about on the website. ;D

15
Lol you can trust it if you want, but I am not risking losing a  $1000 wing because it's using a knot that could easily back off if it snags on mast or under any other day-to-day  bumps that the wing is subject to.  Evey time I kite I attach detach my kite limes and can redo the knot.  I shouldn't have to do this with a leash for a wing that I never detach.
